Fungus gnats or WINGED ROOT APHIDS???

My money is on soil mite

thanks for the response. I had a good close up with my scope, couldn't see the cornicles that are typical in aphids. just reeling over any soil pests u know. I also have spring tales, I think they are what I see in my res floating on top in deformed bodies. I think gnatrol might wipe out their young life stage.

I have a question for those using orthene drenches.

I have noticed each time I use the product my room smells like death for at least a week. Has nobody else experienced the god awful smell I am talking about? Not the odor when mixing it (I wear protective gear) It's almost a sulfur rotten egg smell which has me worried it's the orthene breaking down and off gassing potentially harmful substances which happens when it breaks down via heat.
It's documented somewhere.
Has anyone else noticed this?
What the hell is going on?

its an organophosphate. it has that smell as soon as u crack the seal on it. I assume its breaking down quickly over the first week, it has a short half life.

do u run carbon filters? the smell is very diluted the next day for me, n not noticeable after a full day or 2. it says its safe to spray without a mask, but it sure smell toxic. anyway the rei is 24 hours.

This room is sealed and does not have an exhaust. I just got it set up after a quick move and haven't put a carbon filter in yet but I have one in the garage I was going to install today.

I wonder if just scrubbing the room will help.

I'd have to shut off my mini split to vent to room without wasting a ton of electricity but venting the room is an option (it's set up for an emergency situation) the fans alone won't keep the room at acceptable levels unless I shut off a couple lights.

that's a big YES. u tube it, theres plenty of nasty vids. also some pics in the beginning of the thread of them on net cups, talks about them in res's.

shit that was horrible. guess ill stick to coco with frequent applications of ogbiowar, top dressing with crab meal and insect frass and neem meal, and mycotrol every few weeks.

Yeah for real I LOVed DWC and the growth rates and yields till the RA's took residence in the hydroton , almost impossible to keep it clean if you live in an area where there are fliers outside. They eventually make it in...went 100% coco and never looked back.

How do u keep um out of the coco? Something similar to the method i mentioned above?

For what it's worth the scrubber is def helping the odor situation caused by the orthene. It's still detectable in the room but it's reduced by probably 75% or more.

I haven't tried this yet but im going to start implementing it, boil the coir before transplant, then periodic 120f waterings were reported to be successful. that fellow was using turface though.
the pre boil idea came from coir guys though.

plus botanicals such as rosemary oil drenches, pyrethrum drenches. also always have sticky traps to get adult fliers n help early identify.

id like to check out ogbiowar but cant source any locally. so I will use some other beneficials also, along with beneficial fungi such as actinovate to keep root disease at bay if there are a few virus spreading little bastards in the medium.

those are some of the ideas im workin on. gonna do some more research n come up with a system for ipm to hopefully avoid these little headaches.

How many orthene + riptide treatments do you guys recommend to completely eradicate your root aphids? I'm planning on flowering out my larger females that are already 3-4 weeks in with only organic treatments but I still have my hardest hit seedlings that are recovering now after their first combo treatments. They are still in solo cups so it's very easy to mix up a gallon of the combo and dunk them in a larger gatorade bottle. There was instant and noticeable improvement since the treatment too.

yeah its amazing the disease pressure these bugs put on ur plant. its like they went from a flat tire to cruising down the interstate at 70mph. I cant wait for the yield n flavor n high to be back at potential. my old death star cut was a mere weak image of itself. I just hope that a virus hasn't long term effected it. I don't really believe in genetic drift, at least not on a short human life measurement. maybe over centuries. the way a plant loses its vigor or specialness, imo, is because of situations like this where a virus can get into the plant from root damage caused by these little disease vector bugs.

my opinion on the treatments is, while one might have 100% kill in the pot n root zone, I always do a second treatment for any pest, to get stragglers. also likely, ur room or outside room will be harboring these little bastards. so a second treatment will help with those. but nothing is going to replace having to keep inspecting them, n using ipm, n preventive cleanliness.

Definitely on the same page with you here. I know that there are some stragglers flying around and what not. The main concern here is what kind of time frame are we talking? A week? 10 days? 2 weeks? Should I do a regular watering in between treatments or 2 consecutive treatments? Make no mistake, I want to knock the little shits out in one fell swoop and get back to business as usual.

I know it will smell horrible, and probably isn't that practical for those that live in their grow environment, but I got orthene foggers, used one on each floor of my house, and just made sure to dispose of open food and clean all surfaces after. Yeah, it was gross, but fuck those little cornicle'd bastards
