Have to salute those behind the effort.
In the United States (before it was even the United States), in the 1600’s there were a number of revolts in which black slaves and white indentured servants joined forces against the landowners over their working conditions. In response, the landowners gave privileges to the white indentured servants, sometimes putting them in charge of the slaves, elevating them above the black slaves. This caused the whites to no longer see class solidarity with the blacks, and prevented the two groups from joining forces again. It is the original white privilege. I’m not saying all prejudice has that origin, but in America racism was literally invented to protect the owners from their workers.
This is why American Capitalism and racism are inextricably intertwined. Racial oppression is a tool of economic oppression. This is not to say that all capitalists are racists. But systemic racism serves the economic interests of the elite. It was designed to do that, and it still does that. When you see poor whites opposing their own economic interests because it might also help blacks, you see the system working as intended.
This is our history and our present. It is historical fact.
'Whenever the government provides opportunities in privileges for white people and rich people they call it “subsidized” when they do it for Negro and poor people they call it “welfare.” The fact that is the everybody in this country lives on welfare. Suburbia was built with federally subsidized credit. And highways that take our white brothers out to the suburbs were built with federally subsidized money to the tune of 90 percent. Everybody is on welfare in this country. The problem is that we all [too] often have socialism for the rich and rugged free enterprise capitalism for the poor. That’s the problem." - Martin Luther King Jr.
