Stop using the word "marijuana"..it's called Cannabis

I hate the word Marijuana.

First they gave Cannabis a weird, obscure, foreign name, told lies about it, then they banned it. Which was pretty amazing when you consider at this time it was more than likely that some of over the counter medicinal tonics, salves, restoratives, relaxants, "cures" and other medicines "for man or animal" in most American's cabinets at home contained Cannabis Sativa as an ingredient.

Cannabis is the name of the plant, Anslinger in the 1930's popularized the term "marijuana" and it's a term that the prohibitionists and the media and just about everyone else since then have used to help keep this useful plant illegal.

So it's about time that we started using the word "Cannabis" which will help everyone eventually be free of their negativity, bullshit, profit and control driven war related to cannabis.

Next time you are about to write or say the word Marijuana instead say/write the word "Cannabis", which will be correct and positive! Next time you hear the word "marijuana" let that person know that it's a term that is now considered to be a negative term for cannabis.

marijuana marijuana marijuana marijuana.....you get the idea? Nothing negative about that word. Marijuana is even a prettier word than Cannabis...

"hate" is an ugly word...but it's your 2nd word....credibility went right out the door in your 2nd word

Actually, there is something very negative about it, even if you can't see it. It is Cannabis' slave name, used by those who demonized it and succeeded in making it illegal by appealing to people's xenophobia. If you want to bow to the slave masters, that's your prerogative, but it most certainly was intended to cast cannabis in a negative light.

Yup. Slave masters. You know, the ones who throw you in prison and then make you work after being caught using it. Those are called slave masters, and those being caged are the slaves. People in prison are slaves, and those who encouraged their imprisonment used xenophobia, and the slang foreign term they used to appeal to xenophobes was the "M" word. You can call it anything you want. It doesn't confront me. However, it's proper, scientific name is Cannabis, whether sativa, indica, or ruderalis. Maybe a little reading will clear it up for you:

"Scientific names are never misleading. No matter where you are, every plant has only one correct name, so long as its taxonomic treatment is not in dispute. This last is a major reservation, but we can ignore it for now. The universality of scientific names means that even English speaking people can find out what species grow in China or Saudi Arabia by reading a technical flora of these countries. Not only are the names the same, they are always written in the Latin alphabet (which is the same alphabet as these notes).
1) Names were formed like Latin words. The reason is quite straightforward; Latin was the common language among all European peoples - and plant taxonomy as we know it has its origins in Europe.

2) Once a name had been attached to a plant group, it should not be given another name.

3) When commenting on how a name was to be interpreted, one should list the names of others that had used it.

4) It helps to mention some specimens that one has seen.

The first attempt at developing an international agreement was made in Paris in 1867. At this meeting, it was decided that a) the first edition of Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, which was published in 1752, would serve as the starting point of botanical nomenclature and b) if two names had been given to the same plant group, the older name would be the correct name. In addition, various rules were laid down as to what was required to valid publication - a phrase that means "published in such a manner that the name counts". For instance, publication of new names in horticultural catalogs used to be acceptable, but it is not any longer.

This is how science names Cannabis:

Kingdom – Plantae
Phylum – Magnoliophyta
Class – Magnoliopsidia
Order – Rosales
Family – Cannabaceae
Genus – Cannabis
Species – Sativa, Indica, Ruderalis

So, you can use any colloquial name you want, however it's real, scientific name is Cannabis, with a capitol "C".

That's right, Cannabis is the scientific name for the plant, Marijuana is a slang word that no one outside some Mexicans knew what it was until that cross-dressing, control freak Anslinger decided to ban the plant in an attempt to create more power for himself (it worked)...

If you want to call it a name that the prohibitionists popularized to make cannabis illegal then go right ahead.....

in some ways, the word "marijuana" is similar to the word "nigger"

Common Name- Marijuana, Reefer, Ganja, Bud, Chronic, Dank, Weed, Kaya, etc.

There are Latin names for plants and there are common names for plants. Get over it

I used to use the word marijuana all the time, but less so now as I prefer cannabis or grass, ganja, etc etc. I can see where the pro-marijuana users are coming from, the word has been equally loved by smokers and promoted by the prohibitionists, it has both positive and negative sides to it, how much depends on your opinion.

There's slang, and there's science.

get over yourselves...get high or something...smell the flowers...seek out the sunshine. proper science...jesus fucking christ lol...it's slavery now is it? You know you live affluently when: a concern of yours is slang vs science...you believe the entire world revolves around western culture....and then still have room (in your schedule) to point out the slave masters (a very broad and general blanket) have control of the world. Fight the power...even if...you don't have to move away from your desk..well done

Well, this thread is certainly segregating the free-thinking old heads from the politically correct, young cannabis dudes...

You can call me anything you want; I won't be offended. Just don't call me late, to the "toke fest"...

This has absolutely no correlation, you guys are grasping at straws because you lost your 'call it cannabis' battle.

I really love marijuana. That is all.

If I were black, I'd be offended at the racial epithet comparison. I'm white, so I'm offended for them. Absurd comparison considering it's a fucking plant.

Don't put the plant on a pedestal and compare it to the cruelest of human segregation. Don't move on and start calling all those who use the term marijuana, Hitler, and then refer to the plants as modern day Jewish people.

It's absurd.
