It's been Marijuana to me since I first heard the word in the 1950s. A forbidden fruit with a dark sexy name. It will always be Marijuana to me. The last people on earth I would listen to about changing it's name are the people trying to make money off it. What the fuk is next, calling Heroin Papaver Somnifern so you can soften it's image and make more money off it.

I posted the same thing years ago. Cannabis is it's proper name, and when talking with your friends,you can call it anything you want, but when discussing it in the public eye, it's proper name should be used, IMO. The "M" word is it's slave name, used to help demonize it by our oppressors. I only use "cannabis" in public. When sharing with friends, it can be "ganja", "herb", whatever....

op. Well said. I totally agree. I have written that too. Slang has it's place, just not used always when discussing cannabis. And further, I personally think NORML and MPP are mostly full of shit as well, and not just because of their disgusting names. BTW, I thought the Spanish slang for marijuana was mota.

I cant stand the word sinsemilla (Spanish for ''without seed'', for different reasons.
firstly its dated because weed is completely undesirable with seeds anyway. no one has a seeded option when you go to buy bud. so hence the word is un needed. its kinda like buying a cheese burger and asking them to add cheese. fucking annoying.
it goes without saying that it is seedless nowadays.
secondly howard marks aka ''mr nice guy'' says it all the time. I cant fucking stand him and his welsh accent (sorry to any welsh folk here), the fact he says it in welsh annoys me 10x more.

I believe Anslinger [the scumbag] got on William Randolph Hearst's bandwagon. Hearst had major holdings in Timber, paper being vital to a Newspaper chain. He felt threatened by Cannabis' paper pulp potential. He began a campaign to discredit it with big headlines over every Cannabis incident, using the Spanish/Mexican word "marijuana." The Marihuana spelling is an Anglicization of it. This associated Cannabis with Low Class Foreigners, and disassociated it with the commonly used medical applications for Cannabis.
Here's what Anslinger told Congress.
"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage."
And the clincher:
"This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others."
Holy shit! It must be stopped!

I guess if I lived in a Spanish speaking area like California, then I'd probably call it Marijuana too, but when discussing cannabis with most non-users or those who are against the plant, then using the word Cannabis instead of Marijuana will go further in convincing the listener of the positive sides...to me the word marijuana carries lots of negative baggage (Anslinger, lazy hippies, Mexican cartel murders, etc) and the word cannabis seems right on all levels.
and anyway, why would you want to call it Marijuana? cos that's a Mexican girl's name isn't it?

If you are cool with using and hearing the word marijuana, then I say go for it. The word marijuana sounds great when it comes from the mouth of some one who cannabis has touched in a positive way.
I don't know why, but most times when I say the word marijuana I say it with a strong and cultured Mexican accent.
