how much truth is there to the story that the name Marijuana was created as an allusion to the Marias and Juanes (Marys and Johns in Spanish), or in other words: Mexicans.

It was to fix in people's mind that the use of the plant was done mainly by Mexicans, who at the time were considered as merely "inferior brown skinned folk" by the white elites of the U.S.

"that's what the Mexicans use, the devil's weed, what Maria and Juan use, the evil Marijuana" :biglaugh: or something like that...

Such a good point, i quit calling it marywanna a while ago for the very reason the OP suggested. This idea of a name change could possibly work if there weren't so many " i do whatever the fuck i want, to hell with anybody else's ideas" sort of attitude. Not exactly community oriented, is it? This way of thinking might be why the world can be such a difficult place to live in and why nothing ever seems to change. Be well, all

I'm just glad that we have completely taken care of poverty, war, bigotry, and the economy so that all we have to worry about now is the colloquial name of a plant :tiphat: Good job team, always focused on the big issues

Ganja Jah Glory

factoid of the day:

the word Gan in Hebrew means: Garden.

and the word Jah in Hebrew is one of the many names of God.

a proper translation of the term Ganjah should be:

Garden of God.

:yoinks:

now, whether the word Ganja we use today to refer to Cannabis comes from Hebrew is another story...

Well, in the context of this forum, and in the context of the current legalization efforts, id say the topic is quite appropriate. The 'big' issues can be dealt with in the 'big' issue forums, no? If labels and names are no big deal, then why is marketing so effective?

Yeah I don't use that word anymore either since I found out about it's origins/meanings.

But I will say, the marijuana, mary/whore thing
I do find the plant to be like that, it can absorb you and also it is two-faced a bit.
It's got it's pluses but I find there is "dark" side to it too.

(Chinese say it's a fire plant, and when you get close to it, it can warm you up but if you stay with it too long, it can dry you up and burn you (out)).

I do believe there are some side-effects with marijuana use, that can be treated of course.

I'm sure if society was more open about it, there would be less mental strain with using the plant.

isn't controlling language/semantics one of the first steps towards "taking care of" bigotry, the economy, war, et c.? ;)

you gotta culture that inner sense of wrongness before you can train your dogs.

right word, wrong word, somebody's gonna get whipped. it's good to know there's a right and wrong, saves all the thinking.

I have heard a lot of different names as we all have, Mj is used a lot, but cannabis is the name that sounds the most medical to me. Where did the name pot come from? Their going to pot?

My economics professor couldn't stress enough the importance of language when it came time to define things. Words have different meanings for different people, no? Arent we trying to appeal to those who might still see cannabis in a negative light? It has been my experience that they all call it marijuana. Whats wrong with trying to convince them to see things a little differently? Anslinger may be gone, but the stigma he created is still circulating throughout those who are in control consisting mostly of baby boomers who grew up in that era. If you have loved ones doing time for possession, you might have good reason to consider the ramifications of using such terms.

The definition of 'weed' is an undesirable plant. Ive been questioning my use of this one for a while. The only term i dont use i guess is marijuana, mostly because of Anslinger and his cohorts.

If you dont want to stop using the word, so be it. Nobody is forcing you. If you do, for the reasons the OP posted, then way to see past your own selfish needs. Bravo. I wish there were more like you.

English is the kind of language where you have a word that means 3-4 things.

Where as some other languages, like French, you have 3-4 words that mean one thing.

English is much easier to learn then French from what I understand.

Does this mean I have to stop listening to all music that mentions" marijuana"? My selfish needs might not let me do that....

"selfish needs"

talk about self-aggrandizing bullshit...lol

this whole thread reminds me of a story (joke?)...

I was walking down the street, smoking a cigarette (when I still smoked), and a woman came up to me. She said "don't you know those things are terrible for you? They'll blacken your lungs, make your teeth yellow, and make your clothes and fingers stink!"

I replied "that's interesting, but I have an uncle who lived to be 105, ya know"

She said "wow, and he smoked too?"

and I replied "no, but he knew how to mind his own fucking business"

take that as you will

Nice, way to miss the point completely. I guess some people just prefer to swim in the shallow end. :dunno: That, or they just dont know how to tread deeper water. Whatever. Great topic, OP. Its a nice diversion from the same old tired and mindless 'who's got the frostiest bud?' competitive crap. They should change the name of this forum to 'international egographic'. Im grateful for the other forums as this one has taken a turn for the worse.

well i'll tell ya. it's a long way from cymru, NSW, or other places i've lived, to southern arizona, where i've lived for 30 odd years.

it's close to mexico here.

feel free to come down here and start telling the locals what to call things, and see how long it takes you to figure out that there are also people who live here, who are this way,

so future evolution is likely to take into account the diversity rather than your vision of the ideal. if you can ignore what i'm saying as selfishness rather than a representation of many people, then you win the prize huh.

i'm trying to let you know about it. you just go on and be the right one.

The forums not so bad, people just don't like being told what to do.

Medical Marijuana doesn't sound derogatory to me-

Says the guy who's swimming in such deep water that he's giving up the term" weed" because of its dictionary meaning. Shut the fuck up and go smoke some weed. Sorry a lighthearted post went over your head

I might not agree with what you say but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it.
By the way I'm a veteran of Panama and Iraq and I take your free speech rights seriously, I had friends that gave a lot for you to have them.

I was gonna drop out of this thread due to the hypocracy of some of the supporters of the OP,
but some of these people need to listen to what is actually coming out of their own mouths.

Let's see now, because I choose to continue using the word Marijuana, I've been called stupid, negative, selfish, racist and ignorant.
I also been told that I "must swim in the shallow end of the pool".

CactusFlower states that he or she defends my right to free speech and had friends who gave a lot for me to have that right..

Myself, and the people here who support my side of this argument are not the one's trying to tell anyone what they should or should not call the plant we all love...
It seems to me that it is the OP, and his supporters who are trying to infringe on my right to call it what I want...
