After seeing that list of genes I can see why you're so nostalgic for the old days. I can count the times I've been surfing on django reinhardts left hand and that was lame surfing on the east coast but good surf and an open sharing grow community with plenty of reacclimated exotic sativa doms sounds like heaven. I remember reading that Mendocino allowed cultivation of a few plants even for recreational use at some point. Am I mistaken?

Currently the Board of Supes is trying to make it legal...

Would love to move there before it gets too expensive... don't knock the east coast.
If you are ever san francisco way, I'll take ya out. Got plenty of baords. I am originally from the east coast...Boricua!

I often wonder about the direction our breeding efforts might have
gone in had we lived a few more dirt roads up the highway in Humboldt.
More specifically & to the point- one of the areas in Sunsets Western
Garden Book climate zone 15 (Think redwood trees, Jurassic ferns & great folks). These spots are noted for their foggy mornings & June gloom, heavily influenced by coastal climate. If this mix came out of that region it would have certainly been sativa dominant as they have mold problems with indicas up there & different tactics evolved. These folks grew giant sativas in relative full sun(when the sun comes out in some of these areas, the grower is well advised to get all of it)- gardens numbered in the teens usually. Of some interest is that these small gardens did & still do get hammered by the opposition. I've always thought that this was likely related to the powers that be having it in for these outspoken soldiers of peace on the front line in & around some of these areas. My utmost respect goes out to these folks. Climate zone 14 (dryer) evolved into growing smaller broad leafed varieties under the trees (when the sun is always shining, the grower can afford to have only filtered light) with gardens numbering in the hundreds usually. By the way in my opinion that book mentioned is essential for western property hunting as microclimate & water supply greatly dictate the life you are able to live as a gardener of all things.
Nostalgic? Guilty. Lets go back to the Thai. I don't recall if this was something handed down by an old mentor of mine or if it may have been something I read somewhere(?), the two often blur together. I think the introduction of Thai bud had a lot to do with the California growers movement. When Thai hit the market it came with a relatively hefty price tag on it at around $1800 a pound & rarely made it far beyond the ports of entry. It was gobbled up quickly & the original "back to the land" California growers soon learned that they could get that same price for their sinsemilla buds. Before that there was not enough money in it for a guy to make a living. Then they came :) big dealers, hash smugglers, pilots of low flying aircraft & all of their nutty friends flocked to the hills. This was a hell of a seed sharing cannabis community & they had connections all around the world when computers were still the size of a living room. These men, & guys like Jim Richardson, Rob Clarke, Sam Skunkman etc etc who helped then & continue to try & help make sense of it all- These men with balls of steel- this is who we rightly raise our bongs & chillums to- "cheers". Comparatively, I'm just your local neighborhood snot nosed delivery boy :D

Yours truly,
Tom

Tom, you may have been a delivery boy by comparison back then, but now, with your recent deliveries of genes, you are held in very high esteem by many of us and I for one am immensely grateful.

Interestingly, my best friend is going to buy a property in either Portugal or the south of France, he is looking for something rural and out of the way as he likes his peace and quiet, he also loves his cannabis and has decided he wants somewhere with a good patch of land attached, he is no grower, and instead wants me to make full use of his land, anyone got any thoughts on the best areas in Portugal, Spain or France for outdoor growing, especially sativas?

A delivery boy? jejejejej!!
Tom,a silly question:
Is it true that in "the hills" one out of control flowering male is a sin worse than stealing a horse? :D
A couple pics of 2nd gen. cuttings in early flowering:

BH -

generalizing..

lets start with france.. france is at the same level more or less as British columbia.. its is one of the rainiest countries of europe - remember all atlantic coast countries get the mayor part of the atlantic humidity and rainfall. france is excellent agricultural grounds.. for hemp this should be ok..

portugal is on the atlantic coast, all storms and rain etc coming from the atlantic is pouring down over portugal, but still portugal is propably better than france for growing cannabis thats narcotic.

i think tradicion shows where in europe cannabis allways have grown the best - and its the south eastern parts of Spain - that did have enormous cannabis cultivacions untill the time of our grandparents. specially should be noted villages like Xativa in the province of Valencia.. the name comes obviously from sativa (both words are pronounced pretty much the same)

Spain is definetly the country in europe where most cannbis is grown, because of tradicion and since it pretty much doesnt need too much work.

there is big regional differencies in all three countries, but spain gets the least rain of europe - thats a fact that is undisputable. and the south of spain gets the least of rain of spain.. so basicly..

we have very dry growing seasons giving very resinous plants - if grown well.. unfortunatelly about 99% of the growers here dont know enough to get good results.. however its changing (talking about my area - where cannabis and potatoes are treated pretty much the same, in questions of care) the good part is cannabis grows very well here even if the growers dont know what they are doing.

actually the region of Murcia is propably the only region of europe that in their pollen count for pollen-allergy purposes gets read outs of pollen of cannabis sativa. There is obviously an enormous amount of people growing here. also since a good time back this region has been the center of a lot of outdoor operacions, beeing a fairly mountanous region, with a relativelly few people. basicly people anyway just go ahead and plant their plants inbetween the lemon and orange trees :D the biggest problem though is the better the conditions for growing get - the less water there is. this means very soon it might get fines on big water use.. this region is pretty much getting desertic. the water reserve is at 10 % or less. sometimes we do get even snow down here - but generally its unusual for the temps to go down under freezing point for more than a few hours a couple of nights a year.

Almeria is an other very suitable region - as long as u are out of the highest mountains - so u dont get any cold spells end of season.. there also drought is a problem and u have to get tank-lorries to bring water to most remoter locations.

here the sativas can grow to sizes of 4-5 meters or more - plants get the best out of their genetics out here. if its an indica dominat hybrid in direct sunlight.. it will be a short and very stout plant. harvests of several kilos from one plant is far from unusual . it is actually almost a rule if everything goes ok with plants started very early in the season.

my first messy outdoor very long time ago filled a whole room with buds drying. u cant fail if u jsut water em. adding proper nutes etc - makes the results even better.

i have shown this pic in many threads - but i think it shows the best how a plant react to the climate here - clones got taken out in august (beg. of flower season.) 4 plants gave us 1,5 kilo of bud - and that after taking away the tips that got mould because of an incident that easilly could have been avoided.. if preseen. a strong rainfall broke the center pole of the roof of the rain-roof for the palnts and the plastic got wrapped around the buds - and that is not good at all :D

here is a few pics from one of the SSH x PTK clones (some hybrid vigor is present but not much in this pheno - rather its PTK dominant mostly IMHO) also got to ad - plants grown in Coco - hydro hand watered daily, in 15 gallon pots. the bottle is a half gallon pepsi bottle.. as u see - it tiny in comparison with the nugs :D

many persons from the cannary islands claim their sativas are very potent - they for sure atleast have the longest outdoor season of europe (beeing an island outside africa - it explains a lot) - how ever saline sea air is never good for the plants.. the atlantic hurricane season is from 1st of june to 30 of novemeber. and that means u can get strong storms with high salt levels in the air.. but its not allways it happens.

im sure there is a lot of other places and climates that are ok that i dont know of in this latitude i live in (37°58'43"N) :D and other ones. too

sorry to get long-winded :D

peace

edit I - BH - some of your country men have writen a book about living in this region.. a link:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brits-Scrap...4752709?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181921881&sr=1-1

edit II - obviously great bud can be grown elsewhere too -dont mean to step on any toes, just talking climate-wise, u know :D . :D

I think it's a very good moment to start them raco,

Moon started 15th june the descending cycle. Good moment to germinate, re pot and work the soil in the next 2 weeks. 15th and 16th june are especially positive because are 'flower' day (good day to work flowers). Let's pop them! :gaga: have good night friend.

bonecarver, it's going to be funny see all the different grows with Tom's genetics. Good luck to all! dubi
