I live on Florida’s West Coast in Central Florida. We’ve got some wins at 40 miles an hour and bands of rain coming in, but I don’t expect very much more than that. I’ve got all my cars and equipment stowed up and I have my generator ready to push the button and get off grid.I hope all you Florida folks stay safe and avoid any problems with the storm
hey man! welcome to the football thread boo
hope you and yours stay safe from the storm, this looks like it could be a good one

How’s she cutting everyone? Hope you’re all safe and well. Been flat to the mat the past while.. No sign of early retirement unfortunately. It’s Good to see the steelers sitting pretty in AFC North, (what can I say) been watching highlights as most of the games are on rather late. Been dragging my ass out of the pit at 6am due to early morning starts. I scanned the previous pages “the sex machine got my attention the most” quite a bizarre contraption, I hope it comes with instructions. Happy birthday buzz ya ol fecker..

Take it easy everyone, and keep it real..

Back to my parlour ;

Is it the liver issue? Hawk said his liver enzymes or something were like 1000, which was way way higher than normal.

Hopefully Buzz gets his power restored in a day or three and can post an update. Looks like the eye passed to his east, similar path to Idalia last yr, so maybe his winds topped off at 60mph instead of 80+. Every little bit counts at those speeds...

I got the cowboys tonite. Giants didnt cover the spread vs washington, that's my logic. Plus 'Boys are objectively a talented team, right?

Im sure Buzz has a few usb battery banks, they wont last him long without a gennie/grid power, but they'll last him a couple days.

Arent u a Florida resident, Boo? 40mph winds can be damaging as well. But ur right, Buzz is going to see some $hit tonite.
What was the last h-word to hit central FL bad, boo? Michael?

U picked a winner, Superx. Steelers are a lock for the playoffs, i think, 3-0 and with justin fields keeping turnovers low.
Do u leave the house at 6am or wake up at 6am? Leaving at 6am is pretty dang early. Is it the drive?
Does Ireland have a decent retirement system? How long, realistically, before you can retire without any effect on ur current standard of living? Hopefully not too long.
Is that really the view from ur home? Looks like a green paradise. Looks a little rainy tho. But i guess that's what helps make it green.

Hey Buzz, how much longer do u have power? R u supposed to unplug everything in case of surges? Already 250K FL residents are without power, and Helene isnt supposed to hit land for another 6 hrs...
Hey babba, rainfall here can average up to 200 days a year, though the west of Ireland can exceed those figures, ya get use to it.
Regarding retirement schemes, alot go with personal pension plans( personal retirement fund) helps when your retired, and you would also be entitled to the normal pension. That lump sum of money depends on your tax returns.

Retirement age is 99 🤣
Your sack would need to be dragging of the ground before consideration..
Retirement age in Ireland is 65, as this would be stipulated in your contract, the government are currently trying to raise that age to 67. There is no law in force to legally stop somebody from working beyond that age. A lot would get there pension at that age anyway plus redundancy package, so it would make sense to just bail out..
I need to orbit the moon several times before approval.

Obviously self employed is a different kettle of fish...
Winner winner chicken dinner..

You can certainly feel the nip in the Air over the past week or 2, temperatures here would of been averaging 5-6c (fareinheight, who knows) Autumn wouldn't be my favourite month, the cold snap though brings out some amazing colours on the trees, especially the Acers and maples.

So Florida is taking a bashing,
Was the floods and hurricanes in Florida that bad?
I was reading gusts of winds of speeds at 225kms, is this normal for this time of year in Florida?

The Irish pension system doesnt sound dissimilar from America's, social security retirement age ranges from 62 to 69 or even 71, depending on when u were born. A lot of workers in the private sector supplement their SS retirement with private retirement accounts, IRA's and 401K's, cause there are tax breaks you can get when u set up and contribute to those accts.

Do u mean u have to orbit the sun a few times before u can start collecting?
Also, generally speaking, over here the longer u work and delay retirement the more ur monthly payment will be when u start. So that's another consideration, how early u can retire vs how much u will collect when u do.

Id like to see what ireland looks like with some browns and reds interspersed with the green.

100mph winds should be normal anywhere but that section of FL, the NW panhandle, has experienced that twice in 2 years so far (Idalia last yr, Helene this yr).

I think I just saw Buzz's home on TV just now. Ignore the fact that the size shape and color are wrong.

Crazy, are these prefabricated homes, no solid/concrete foundations? Maybe all timber, how else would they float away.. Would you be covered under your home insurance policy..

What was the last h-word to hit central FL bad, boo? Michael?

no power for almost 24 hours but the generator is cranking, 12K powered by Honda 20 hp v twin...I believe the last big storm was Ian...I don't keep track of the names unless it's one of my exes names...those storms would surely be dangerous...she told me to get rid of my cars and tools...I thought better and moved out of the house and gave her 1Million for my freedom...she pissed it ALL away within 10 years...

Im not sure how that happens, Superx, there's another FL resident I talk to that said he had his home bolted to his foundation. I guess that's a thing in areas where H-words are common? Im also thinking that home was on a slab foundation, no basement, but im not sure.

I think in America the federal govt does flood insurance for homes, otherwise private companies wouldnt dare cover these types of natural disasters.

Oooo, Ian in 2022. That was a Category 5. U remember Ian, Buzz? That hit SW FL before moving on to the Carolinas so maybe u didnt get so much damage then.

Good to hear youve only lost power, Boo. Youve got 12 kw of generator power? Sounds like u can run lights, a/c, everything without a hitch. Must use a decent amt of gas tho.

Sounds like u were a most generous ex-husband, Boo. What'd she spend 1M on in 10yrs? Living the instagram lifestyle? Fancy cars, plastic surgery, 5k/mth apartment? How's she doing now, if u know?

Yes Hawk, now is the time to ask for a sponge bath from the 20 something female nurse's assistant. Tell her to pay special attention to your balls and arsehole. Dont be afraid to dig in there. And if a finger happens to slip in, knuckle deep, you wont complain to her supervisor. 'Accidents' happen, yknow.

I imagine Buzz might be busy with the chainsaw for the next day or three. Hopefully his grow is intact, his plants havent floated away or anything. Hopefully he gets power back soon as well.

This is going to be Superx soon, if he can't retire until his 90s:

elderly worker v1.jpg

There is something to be said to remaining active even during retirement, concentrate on hobbies or exercise, travel etc. But yeah, it'd suck to have to keep working well into old age because u need the $$.

I got a really nice ball pic i plan to post this weekend. Do u want to see a wiener pic first tho? I prefer to keep the frank and the beans separate.

Ah man, Happy Birthday, Buzz. What are you, 45, 46, young man?
I have to do some addition with your figures, @Bababooey . . . turns out I am 72 as of 3:40AM today.
What will u do for Bonnie's bathroom breaks during the storm? Maybe u can lay some pee pads around for her.

The clear lexan h-word shutters are a very nice upgrade, were they expensive?
Bonnie and I watch the weather radar to time our pooping. She does not mind a light rain but heavy lightning and thunder are "No Go Times". She goes to pee in the front yard and I stand on the porch to encourage her to "Go pee, Bonnie" as she sniffs and explores the scent trails of critters in her yard.

The lexan panels are more expensive than the metal panels, but surprisingly more impact resistant than metal. They are also lighter and easier to slip into the header above the window. I think it was about $5200 for the materials and I did the installation. All lexan panels would have been a budget buster. The lexan allows light in the house. The gloom of darkness coupled with a storm is soul sucking. Light is better than dark when the H-word rolls in.
A bit of good news is that the eye is tracking to pass to the east of u, and the winds on the west side of the eye should be a good 20-25mph slower than the winds on the east side.
That good news came across from the local meteorologist about 3:30P on Thursday. That moved us to the west of the dreaded Cone of Uncertainty. There was another wiggle to the east just before landfall that added another 25 miles away from the eye. The big winds and gusts began to build about 10P Thursday. I fell asleep before we lost power. I woke up at 1:30A and sat in the living room with the portable AM/FM radio listening to weather reports. I stepped out onto the front porch in the wind and rain for a short time. The pecan branches were swinging and swaying, and I could not see much beyond the flashlight beam.
happy birthday my man!
It is a beautiful bright sunny morning here with a comfortable 67.5F trmp cooling my bare toes. Thanks, @pop_rocks .
do you have any usb battery packs you can charge as well?
No I do not. Gasoline lasts longer than battery power. When all communication and electricity go down we are in 'camping mode' with a noisy machine outside. I expected to be in the dark for much longer after Helene passed. Michael took 7 days. The generator can run the well and 6 circuits in the house, but not at the same time. The well house is about 100' away from the outside closet where the transfer switch for the house is installed next to the breaker panel. Lugging the gen from Point A to Point B is hard work for my old back, but a hot shower is worth every grunt and strain.
Happy birthday buzz ya ol fecker..
Thank you, @superx, and I appreciate the fact that I made it to being an ol fecker. Now I have license to feck around with any ol fecker that feels like feckin wit me.
Are you able to watch any NFL games? This could be another W for the Steelers.
Hey Buzz, how much longer do u have power? R u supposed to unplug everything in case of surges?
We lost power sometime around 11P Thu. The transfer switch separates the house circuits from the electric grid. It prevents the generator from back feeding the grid and the possibility of injury or death to a lineman. I have surge protectors on all of the electronics and TVs for the just in case moments. Have not had any problems to date with power restoration.
Hope buzz and and everyone stays safe.im in the hospital right now.
All good here, @shithawks. Thanks for thinking of me while you are in a bad situation. The ringing you may be hearing is probably a wake up call. You have more life to live and we are rooting for your speedy recovery.
Hopefully Buzz gets his power restored in a day or three and can post an update. Looks like the eye passed to his east, similar path to Idalia last yr, so maybe his winds topped off at 60mph instead of 80+
I have no idea of the wind speeds here. The sound difference between plywood vs shutters is great. The shutters deaden wind and rain sounds. The wind speeds that are recorded and reported are not based at ground level or on gusts. The readings are taken above treetop level and they record sustained wind speed. The gusty wind bursts coupled with recorded wind speed bring down trees.
So Florida is taking a bashing,
Was the floods and hurricanes in Florida that bad?
I was reading gusts of winds of speeds at 225kms, is this normal for this time of year in Florida?
The houses that were floating were caused by storm surge along the coast. A hurricane can push a dome of seawater ahead of it. The Big Bend of Florida is sparsely populated and very low level. The curve of the coastline and the direction of Helene combined to make a wall of water that was estimated at 16', perhaps higher in some spots. Many homes are old wood frame construction, but a wall of water can sweep away most homes near the coast. New construction requires elevating the house along with strapping reinforcement between roof and top plate of walls and impact resistant windows.

Hurricane season starts every year on June 1 and ends November 30. The peak of the season occurs mid-September, but they can occur at any time during the season. Strength is rated on a 1-5 scale according to wind speed.
But ur right, Buzz is going to see some $hit tonite.
Hey @Boo I used to live in Indian Rocks Beach and then Fort Myers before moving north. This one had me worried especially the tracks showing up on Thursday morning. A wobble to the east a couple of times spared us the worst.
U remember Ian, Buzz?
Yes I do, because it turned away from us. My longtime friend from college days remembers it too. His house took a hit in Northport.
im sending you my prayers @buzzmobile and hope the worst has passed, now you get to clean up the aftermath
if you cant keep your feet dry at least keep your chin above water
i have a pick em up truck if you need me
I wondered where those golden sparkles falling around the house came from. I thought it was a golden shower at first. You probably are the guy that gave Helene a nudge.
I imagine Buzz might be busy with the chainsaw for the next day or three. Hopefully his grow is intact, his plants havent floated away or anything. Hopefully he gets power back soon as well.
There is no need for a chainsaw. I could use some help with the sticks and branches scattered under the pecans. There are thousands of not quite mature nuts on the ground now. So it goes.

All of the rain found its way into the basement grow rooms. It was just about knee deep and there was a waterfall splashing in the back corner of the flower room. Everything was either laid over and under water or floating in a large pile. That's where the real mess is and I am not about to try to clean it up on my birthday when @pop_rocks is on his way with a pickup truck.

That's the story I'm going to stick with today, boys. I am fucking beat.

Sounds like you were in the eye of the storm man, Sounds fkn tragic..
Maybe try salvaging what you can from the basement, getting what you can out of the water, I would be more inclined to have a whiskey first (it is your birthday)

Any sign of the water levels dropping, signs of structural damage?
Pops might be better arriving in a boat rather a pick up..

Watched the steelers first game and highlights of the second 2, Colts game im hoping will be aired at 6pm local time tomorrow.

Let's hope you will be out of your waders by then.
Good luck with the clean up man, onwards and upwards.

what up xman, for some reason i thought the time difference was much more
6p is prime football watching time, the thursday and sunday night game is on about that time here on the west coast
/when i would travel i had to adjust to football being on at all kinds of weird hours
so do you guys do halloween out there? im already seeing people with decorations out in front of their homes

@buzzmobile
hey whats up buzz man! im glad to see you back and everyone safe
/the cake is a little soggy but happy birthday my man!
knee deep water and a waterfall flowing from the grow room?! sounds like a water park to me and i will bring my swimming shorts and floatys
when we would camp in the wild i had a usb light bulb and fan that i could power from a battery pack and felt like i was a big kahuna, i have light and moving air! all from this little thing
i wish we could have brought along a gas powered genny, but mrs..chicky can only carry so much weight
so what do you do with the underdeveloped pecans? i mean the wood can go on the burn pile but would the nuts pop when roasted in a burn pile?
im glad to hear everyone is safe man and bonnie can get back to her routine

Alright, i was just a little bit off. Still, u seem healthier and more capable than many people 20+ yrs younger than you are, must be all the work around the homestead you do.

My dogs were freaked out by thunder and lightening as well, a little rain was tolerated but they made sure to be quick about it.

5K is a healthy sum but im sure you saved twice that much or more doing it yourself. Seemed like u did a pretty professional job as well, and like u said having the lexan and being able to see makes the house seem less tomb like.

Are you familiar with the legend of the Mag Lab? FSU has a powerful magnetic lab they use for research, legend (or idiots) says that it's able to move hurricanes away from the city. Given that Ian last year was moved east and the area missed the worst of it, maybe theres something to it.

Do homes need to be bolted to their foundation as well to prevent floating away? Is that a thing?

So not too much tree damage except losing most of the pecan harvest, that's a good trade off. But sounds like the grow room is a right mess. Hopefully all the flowering ones are salvageable.

All in all, not an ideal way to spend one's birthday but could have been a lot, LOT worse. Glad to see the property damage was minimal.

Did Buzz see the eye of the h-word? Im not sure he did, maybe the eye passed to the east of him as well?

I havent caught any steelers games so far other than highlights, the Bears old QB, Justin Fields, is 3-0 for them so im happy for them.

Yeah, good question Pops, do they celebrate halloween or some sort of day of the dead across the pond? Or is it more harvest festivals?

Im guessing the squirrels get the unripe nuts so maybe Buzz doesnt have to do much cleanup.

Speaking of H-words, did u watch ur Hurricanes win a close one vs Va Tech last night? Or maybe u were still without power.
Im watching Alabama put a licking on Georgia, 28-7 in the 1st half, somehow i dont think my ML bet on the Dawgs will hit. FSU is down 7-14 to SMU as well.

Hey @Boo I used to live in Indian Rocks Beach and then Fort Myers before moving north. This one had me worried especially the tracks showing up on Thursday morning. A wobble to the east a couple of times spared us the worst.

Yes I do, because it turned away from us. My longtime friend from college days remembers it too. His house took a hit in Northport.

I wondered where those golden sparkles falling around the house came from. I thought it was a golden shower at first. You probably are the guy that gave Helene a nudge.

Happy Birthday Amigo!..
