sorry to hear that Nish, they're so sweet and innocent and depend on us for everything including the one thing we can't give them but want to.

Sorry to hear mate.
It really sucks to lose a pet.
You live with em thinking its gonna be forever but reality shows otherwise eventually.

My condolences.

so I changed Suzi's kibble from whatever her previous owner was feeding her over to 'Precise' which I was giving to Scooby & Alice. Suzi was eating just fine but I also decided to amp it up a bit with a heated dollop of canned food mixed into it.

Now when I'm approaching her feeding area with a bowl of her kibble n' gruel she starts going crazy, running around the room, jumping up n' down, spinning/twirling and in general just going bonkers, it's obvious that she's never had any soft food as a kibble topper.

I feel like a hero twice a day now....... :D

That soft stuff brings out the happy in Coco and Kico too.We give them carrots also as a treat.I think they like the crunch sound along with the taste.I think we spoil are dogs way to much,no harm in that.

thirty years or so ago getting back on the fla. turnpike there was a down on his luck hobo walking with everything he owned slung over his shoulder. in his other hand was a leashed brindle colored pit bull dog. i said to myself when i drove by at least he will get some sleep tonight cause NOBODY is gonna mess with that dog !

because I didn't want Scooby acting aggressively I eliminated plushy toys from our lives, I put them away and actually only thought about breaking them out for Suzi last night.

she went crazy, she took the 2 big ones (bigger than her) and stashed them in her kennel, the 2 smaller ones she launched assaults on eventually leaving their bodies (intact) outside her kennel door. the 2 big fleecy teddybears were arranged in her kennel so that she snuggles between them for warmth.

she was so damn happy to get those toys.......

:)

...... you're a good dad S4L, are you thinking of getting a companion for Suzie?!:tiphat:

I don't think so Giggles, I'm sorta fried on dealing with 2 dogs for now, having only one leaves my life considerably simpler, I'm disabled and home most of the time so her alone time will be very limited.

here's a bit of what I was up against with her housebreaking, I found that she'd pooped her kennel, so I scolded her, picked up the poop and rubbed it on her nose, and then flushed it. dagnabit! 3 days later w/a flashlight inspection I spotted another turd in there, so same routine as above.

I take her out 6 or 7 times a day, I stay outside watching her closely and when I think she owes me a poop I walk her an extra long time and repeatedly passing by her favorite pooping spots; Suzi's problem is that she easily distracted or frightened of unknown or sudden noises, a truck moving on the neighbors driveway can spook her off her mission, a crow cawing will do the same, geese honking on the river at night, wait until she hears the loons cry :nono:

So it's been about a week since her last soiling in the kennel, and btw, that kennel was big enough to hold Alice, a 55 pound dog, Suzi figured she could poop in one corner and easily avoid it by staying elsewhere in there. so I bought Suzi an appropriate sized kennel, small enough that if she poops in it she'll be laying in it, and most dogs just won't do that. she loves her new smaller crate too :)

Suzi's been the very best therapy for me, makes me laugh all day n' night. wiener dogs are just comical looking to begin with, never mind mixing that w/a loving & spirited personality.

last night I moved the flashlight and her shadow suddenly appeared to her left, she jumped and ran about 10 feet before she realized that my roaring laughter signaled everything was okay. @ 9.5#s I guess most everything unknown is a potential threat.......

You'll probably solve the potty-training issue with the smaller crate. When the last dog we got needed potty training I put up a little bell, hanging from a string that the dog rang when it had to go out. Just have to get in the habit of ringing the bell at first when taking the dog out, and the dog picks up on it after a while. As the years went by there was some misuse of the bell, sometimes she would ring it for food at odd hours of the day, but not frequently. Lots of disappointment on that dogs face when it realized the bell only had one use.

I am so sorry for your loss my friend. My dogs are my best friends, next to my wife and son that is. Still, no words can help you but know I am here to read and help if I can

thnx Huli, and to the rest of all the well wishers here too. Suzi's got my mind occupied enough to dull the pain of my very rough feb/march, plus the joy and exuberance she brings to my home daily has been a real boost to my spirits, dragging me away from some sadness and depression that I was suffering beyond and before the loss of Scooby & Alice.

anyway, Suzi just loves that smaller kennel, I've got a toasty small pillow in there for her bedding and she curls up on that and just sleeps hard :) it now her favorite place (besides my lap) whereas the larger kennel got brief visits even though it had a plushy bed in it.

Have you looked into the ingredients of your dog food, off topic but 99% of dog foods are made from crap i wouldnt feed to .... Well my dog lol

Only found out about the shocking state of the pet food industry after losing my dogs, they were fed meat and animal derivatives and wheat their whole lives (pedigree etc)

I now order food online made from top quality human grade ingredients (70% meat + veg) and it costs less than most food from your regular brands that spend millions on marketing

SFL, kudos on the new pup. I haven't the heart to get another. We have discussed it before. I'm pretty sure I'll never have a bond with anything/one, that I had with my lab, aside from the missus, and my grand parents who raised me.
Got a kitty now, that has won over my heart. Now we spend our time spoiling her.
We will make room in our lives for another dog tho'. Soooo many shelter dogs that need a home.
Best of luck with yer' new pup.
I know she is in loving hands. :)

Do you feed a raw diet? Most quality dry and canned foods are expensive.

We feed our cat Halo canned food which is made with human grade ingredients and grain free, also last time I checked never had a recall.
Not the most expensive but it does cost much more than the big brand shite.

No we feed biscuits and some wet food, the wet is expensive but the biscuits work out pretty cheap (50p perday 20kg dog) its called millies wolfheart and its made in the uk http://www.millieswolfheart.co.uk/COUNTRYSIDE-MIX

I think the quality cat food is more expensive because of the additives like taurine but im not sure
