Sending good vibes your way, sorry for the loss. I hated having that void feeling getting another doesn't replace but it definitely helps. Id say you should go to the shelter and see if you cant find yourself another great friend.

Good for you for thinking about a humane society for your next dog. But be warned....I went to a local shelter just to "look" and came home with a new friend lol.

Mixed breed dogs are cool too. Total originals. And they tend to have less health issues than purebreds. Either way, you can't go wrong with adoption.

and so now in my search for a new companion I'm running into issues. first of all I decided that I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a re-homing or adoption fee, this takes me out of most mainstream humane societies and rescue groups, however there were two facilities within a reasonable distance with $150 fees, they were willing to go to $100 considering the distance I'll drive, plus my age and disabilities qualify me for a discount.

okay, that being said I've been looking hard on CraigsList, unfortunately it's somewhat like a lottery system, just like waiting/hoping to be first to post in a Yummybud thread I've gotta be first to respond to ads for dogs I feel will fit in my life and home, small to medium size young female dogs seem to be the most desirable and gone the fastest.

the other thing about CL is that they allow dogs to be re-homed under the following rule: Pet Sales (re-homing with small adoption fee ok)

but the people advertising there are often asking $350-600 and more for their dogs, someone wanted $1000 for their yorkshire terrier, those are not a small adoption fees.

So I sit here during primetime for CL pet listings, I'm looking for that $200 re-homing fee that I can talk down to $100, and of course I'm looking/competing for that in the young female medium size range, I'll drive myself crazy by the time I'm done.

never mind that if I find a dog in the twin cities I'll be putting on more than 400 miles round trip.

Sorry for your loss! I think a small part of my heart would die when my puppy passes away. I found her on CL for free titled, "abused neglected free come get them" tossed out in a snowstorm only weighing five pounds. I would've adopted from the pound but they have fence requirements. 160+ pets are put down weekly in our local shelter and we are not a large city. Have you considered adopting from a kill shelter? I know how someone wouldn't want to support them but here at least, they're ran by the county because there are too many dogs and not enough homes. At my summer internship at a pet organization they put it best that the kill shelters are only dealing with the problem humans created by not fixing their pets. But either way you go, rescue is the best. Wishing you the best of luck in finding a new companion!

Sorry for your loss, another friend goes to the rainbow bridge.....

Shitty about the adoption fee, here it is $300....

It does go to cover the costs of the rescues and vet bills etc. as I know someone who runs a large dog breed rescue. They still lose money every year and survive on fundraising drives. They take in Rez dogs mostly, and they take a decent amount of work to socialize etc. before they are even ready for adoption.

Good luck with the hunt, i am sure you will find a new companion :)

not sure i'd want a dog that was raised by people with that kind of mentality S4L.

even if i had it, before i paid that kind of money to "loving pet owner" on craigslist i'd be buying a first class plane ticket for a dog from a shelter somewhere

have you looked into any breed specific rescues? they're usually not free either, but they really do care about what they're doing and can give you a whole bunch of insight and information about the dogs they're working with

found a sweet little pup to adopt, got her for free off of CraigsList, the owner wanted a $100 re-homing fee which I was about to pay him, but then I told him that his little sweetie was going to such a great home that he should pay me the $100, he declined that counter offer but he agreed to let me take her gratis.......

first thing she did was wizz on my floor :dunno:

she was afraid of her new surroundings and wouldn't pee outside when we got here. it was dark and she was nervous about the cars flying past us on the highway so close by, before we go to sleep I'll carry her into the backyard where it's nice n' quiet.
