I use 'Precise' kibble and I top each bowl with a little Evangers canned food, it comes in Buffalo, Rabbit, Pheasant, Duck, etc... each can's main ingredient is: the animal named on the can, followed by 'water sufficient for processing', then liver and finally guar gum.

Grain free, holistic formula, all natural, no preservatives or fillers, made in the usa.

6oz cans that I get 5 or 6 servings from.......

Good man, its suprising how few people think about what their feeding their dogs, but to be fair before losing my collies i had never even thought about what is in it or even read the ingredients

my springer spaniel Alice was a slightly fussy eater, no matter what kibble I was giving to her & Scooby Doo (Scooby devoured her food) that Alice occasionally wanted some sort of topper on the kibble, no big deal, once every 2 weeks or so she'd look @ me and wait for that topper.

once I started to feed them the Precise brand kibble Alice never looked for another topper, that told me something, I was certain that her needs were being met.

now I put a topper on that same kibble for Suzi but she's so into it for chowing down and it keeps her stool soft enough not to bind her up which was happening early on.

the Evangers is awesome soft food, I suppose somewhere down the road I'll find a different or better kibble for Suzi, that seems to be the cycle of dog foods.......

EDIT:
btw, that Precise kibble is fairly well rated by several entities that either test or judge dog food based on the ingredients. It's not crazy high end like Blue Buffalo brand and in fact I buy from a small pet shop who charges a bit more for his goods. but a 44# bag of Precise plus a $12 bag of biscuits cost me $52 with tax after they deducted a 'Use On This Purchase' coupon from the Precise bag. Between biscuits & kibble I averaged out @ $1.00 per pound, not too bad.

I just called Suzi's previous owner to give him an update, he was glad I did and we had a few laughs about her. we talked about her previous food and the fact that I now feed her a wet food topper over the kibble, I was correct in a previous post above, he never fed her any wet food. Suzi goes flippin' bonkers every time her bowl is mixed and ready, of course I heat that wet food so she thinks it's good ol' home cookin' Oh yeah!!! the microwave definitely stops smelling like popcorn once you start nuking dog food in it :)

This is what she gets for wet food:

she really loves the rabbit, that's some of her instinctual prey & I doubled up on the pheasant last time I hit the feed store, she loves the stuff.

Suzi's been enjoying chasing (leashed) after the birds and a few squirrels but hasn't seen any of my bunny rabbits yet; I've got a brush pile that's as big as a small house, has to be compressed and burned this year, that thing is just full of bunnies.

EDIT:
oh yeah, those cans are 6oz each and she gets 5-6 meals from each, so about 25¢ per serving. honest to god, she just goes crazy every time I'm about to set her bowl down for her

Sorry for your loss sir. I had seven dogs last year and have lost three best friends to old age in less than a year.
Losing your buddies is hard, never a bad word, never mad at you and always happy as hell to see you.
I hope you get another dog that makes you as happy as the last spaniels did.

I got Alice & Scooby's ashes back the other day, now I'm shopping for a couple of urns, and actually I've got to buy 3 urns, my first springer spaniel Trixie still sits in her cardboard box.

Trixie was such a sweet dog, she had a natural nose for grouse too, a tireless hunter. Whenever we'd go out hunting just as soon as her feet hit the ground getting out of the truck/jeep she'd take a huge shit, so excited. she always worked the trails to perfection, never working too far ahead of me, it would be easy to say that we were in tune w/each other as to our hunting styles.

one day we're working a trail on the west 40, all woods and lots of berries; suddenly Trixie stiffens marking a bird nearby, I turn to my right and a grouse is still sitting in a berry bush on the edge of the trail, I was 3-4 feet from the bird & worried I decimate it w/a close shot. That bird never took flight, it hopped out of that bush away from me and ran like a mother fucker, I never even took a shot. When I turned to look at Trixie she had a quizzical look on her face. damn I was pissed off, so we went into the woods until the bird flushed, once flushed a grouse will land in a tree and start making a soft 'booping' sound, it's worrying, and rightfully so. We got that bird :)

dang!!! me & Suzi just went outside, when we made it around the corner of my home we both spotted a black bear walking away from my big brush pile. Maybe 250-300 lbs Suzi couldn't take her eyes off of it but she didn't/wouldn't bark at it either as she usually does when spotting other dogs.......

thnx bro.

little Suzi's earned a nickname here, "Quizno" because she loves being toasty, she's in puppy nirvana if she's wrapped in blankets or covered with my pillows, and Suzi's the only dog I've ever let sit in my recliner but I have to cover it first with that blue blanket.

this is her favorite fleecy throw and usually she's 100% covered, but this is her way of begging when she knows I've brought food to my table, she has to remind me that she's there, Suzi never eyeballs me when I'm eating even if she's got no covers on her, I like that :)

I need to take some new pics of Suzi, when I first got her she had given birth in January & of course weaned off and litter sold in March, I got her shortly after all of that. When she came to me she had that flabby birthing belly plus her ribs & spine were showing, she weighed 8.3 pounds @ the vets that first week (3/11).

went to the vets today to finish all shots with boosters etc, he was amazed as to how well she's filled out and that her birthing belly has dried up 100%, this little doxy is in top shape and weighs in at 9.9 pounds :)

oh yeah, I'm trusting her off the leash at night because there's no risk of squirrel activity, she'd chase them onto the highway otherwise. anyway, tonight was the 2nd time she's seen deer, the first time about 4 nights ago they spooked and ran off, tonight the deer accepted that Suzi wasn't a threat to chase and they remained even when I told Suzi "NO" (to keep her in place) quite loudly. I usually throw 4 or 5 pounds of clover seed under those pine every year and I have 3 salt licks right where they were tonight. Suzi's gonna see a lot of deer.

thnx al, she's being spoiled and coddled, she insists on getting into my lap 4 or 5 times a day and always right after she's eaten for some reason; of course Scooby & Alice would both come over to say thnx after each meal, my sure proof of that is whenever my friend Hank was here during their meal time, he would feed the girls, after eating they'd stop by his chair instead of mine.

and never mind how she takes advantage of me when she gets pushy about snuggling in bed, it's gotta be her way, her tiny feet pushing my armrest pillow out of place so that her belly is prominently displayed for rubbing.

I'm satisfied having a single dog again, no splitting of time & affections, and certainly none of the vigilance that I had to concern myself with Scooby & Alice. Vet bills for one dog, kibble for one small dog, treats for one etc...

I'm so relaxed that I seem to get stoned more easily.......

she chickened out tonight when she spotted a deer, damn thing was about 75 feet away and grazing, and even though I was shining my light on it and calling Suzi back to do her business that deer just kept on keepin' on.......

she's telling me she wants to go out again, hope the yard is empty :)

she's gotta poop by now.

EDIT:
damn deer's bedded down out there
and Suzi's just too spooked to poop.
