I know this is an old, old thread, and I don't mean to be a dick, but I've read through the first few pages and all I've seen so far is this cat bragging about some really awful, just terrible looking oil made from trim that ain't even sugary. lol.

I just did this method using grain alcohol. I figured it was a natural byproduct from a plant. I intended to rub it on my gums but it got sticky real fast. I am going to do this again and not be so clumsy. As the alcohol is on a warm burner you can watch the trichomes collect like sand at the bottom of the dish. I used the smaller of the dishes and since I was learning I am glad. There was enough to collect on this dish but on a big dish it would have been harder to retrieve. I suppose the alcohol is ok to drink but be very careful. I lived in Alaska for 26 years and some villages outlawed Everclear then eventually made all booze illegal. Too many young villagers were killing themselves on the stuff or while drunk. Very sad. I was a bartender in a bar that was favored by the natives and I had many very good friends but saw a lot of people that simply just reacted very bad to the alcohol. I hate to sound any type of racist because my native friends will know I am not. Irish people also frequented the place. A lot of laborers and carpenters for the oil lines hung out there between jobs. The Irish bless there hearts seem to have a few more problems with the booze than most. Give this method a try and really if you drink the stuff be careful. It isn't vodka!.

never want to make an extraction with grain alcohol, those sugars get real nasty...

The medical scene in Vancouver, BC sells reasonably good cannabis and extracts from what I've seen. When truly connoisseur grade product comes around, it is scoffed up by the people closest to the source . As long as cannabis is an illegal drug, there will be people with money willing to pay for superior cannabis and extracts. Of course, those in need of medical grade cannabis or it's derivatives are often economically challenged. This creates a situation where those most in need are those least able to afford it. The only way I see this changing is with the decriminalization of cannabis and it's derivatives.

They sell oils and eatibles at some clubs downtown that will remain nameless and the prices's are through the fucking roof.. I mean come on with those prices's. $70.00 for 1/8 of a gram of toffee give me a fucking break who could afford that? Not many ppl I will tell you right now lol...The City of Van has asked the clubs very polity to stop making products with butane as it's not a regulated gas hence dangerous and to please pull these products and some have complied some have not. I'm sure they will make it law soon enough knowing the City. peace out headband707:biggrin:

hello haters and non haters...

friend in deed.. when u put the pyrex on the pan.. u need a couple pencils or pens or chop sticks inbetween the glass and the metal to keep the water from boiling over and shakin the bowl... i wash the material only once barly gettin the material wet.. and takin off only the good heads in the tricombes.. if u wash the material more then once u get greenish amber ... .

i just got done with 22 lbs of trim washing this method.. and they are selling it in the despenseries as we speak..

do you squeeze out the trim?

MSDS for the Klean Strip SLX Denatured Alcohol (home depot & lowes brand)

Ethyl alcohol {Ethanol} 45.0 -50.0 %

Methanol {Methyl alcohol; Carbinol; Wood alcohol} 50.0 -55.0 %

Methyl isobutyl ketone {Hexone; Isopropylacetone; MIBK;4-Methyl-2-pentanone} 1.0 -4.0%

is there supposed to be more methanol than ethanol?...I thought it was supposed to be 90-95% ethanol & only 5% or so methanol? did this company change its recipe?

OR I HAVE THIS OPTION

Startex

ethanol 89%
ethyl acetate 5%
methanol 4%
heptane 1%
methyl isobutyl ketone 1%

Yeah we made this the about two months ago with all our trimmings and it is amazing!! Store it in the freezer and it lasts forever and its easier to break up!

How are you guys getting oil? I've tried this in small batches letting the alcohol evaporate naturally & it turns out hard as glass. Does this happen to anyone else?

Maybe I missed it inn all these pages but what's the advantage of using denatured alcohol as opposed to other solvents?

I always cringe when I see that this thread has been bumped.

PLEASE EVERYONE: be sure the solvents you use for resin extraction do not contain harmful substances!

IMO this thread should be locked and an advisory warning put up as a sticky.

Cost and availability would be the advantage.

I guess one of the disadvantages would be possibly having unknown potentially hazardous chemicals left in your honey oil. Though theoretically the denaturing agents should evaporate off in a similar way to the alcohol or people would just distill it and have tax free booze.

I use Everclear grain alcohol from the liquor store. To stop the oil from getting rock hard you have to watch carefully and little bubbles will form and when you see them starting to slow down get the oil away from any heat. Good luck!

You guys should really do some research before messing with slovents. I feel sorry for anyone who has purchased that from a med club and smoked it. denatued alcohol is possible the worst thing to use period. Why? It contains Methanol which is a dangerous poison and CAN NOT be removed. Methanol is added to make it UNDRINKABLE. A search in any search engine for the MSDS on this takes about 2 seconds. I urge you to do a search and never use denatured alcohol

Potential Health Effects
----------------------------------

Inhalation:
Causes irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath. Prolonged exposures to high concentration may cause drowsiness, loss of appetite, and inability to concentrate.
Ingestion:
Cause headaches, gastritis, intoxication, blindness and, in acute cases, death.
Skin Contact:
Causes skin irritation, cracking or flaking due to dehydration and defatting action.
Eye Contact:
Can cause eye irritation. Splashes may cause temporary pain and blurred vision.
Chronic Exposure:
Prolonged skin contact causes drying and cracking of skin. May affect the nervous system, liver, kidneys, blood, g.i. tract and reproductive system. Continued ingestion of small amounts could result in blindness.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems or impaired liver or kidney function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. First Aid Measures
Inhalation:
Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.
Ingestion:
Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately.
Skin Contact:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.
Eye Contact:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Fire Fighting Measures
Fire:
Flash point: 13C (55F) CC
Autoignition temperature: 463C (865F)
Flammable limits in air % by volume:
lel: 3.3; uel: 19.0
Flammable liquid and vapor!
Dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame.
Explosion:
Above flash point, vapor-air mixtures are explosive within flammable limits noted above. Vapors can flow along surfaces to distant ignition source and flash back. Sealed containers may rupture when heated.
Fire Extinguishing Media:
Water spray, dry chemical, alcohol foam, or carbon dioxide. Water may be ineffective.
Special Information:
In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full facepiece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. Water spray can be used to extinguish fires and cool fire-exposed containers. Water may be used to flush spills away from exposures and to dilute spills to non-flammable mixtures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Accidental Release Measures
Ventilate area of leak or spill. Remove all sources of ignition. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as specified in Section 8. Isolate hazard area. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering. Contain and recover liquid when possible. Use non-sparking tools and equipment. Collect liquid in an appropriate container or absorb with an inert material (e. g., vermiculite, dry sand, earth), and place in a chemical waste container. Do not use combustible materials, such as saw dust. Do not flush to sewer! US Regulations (CERCLA) require reporting spills and releases to soil, water and air in excess of reportable quantities. The toll free number for the US Coast Guard National Response Center is (800) 424-8802.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Handling and Storage
Protect against physical damage. Store in a cool, dry well-ventilated location, away from any area where the fire hazard may be acute. Outside or detached storage is preferred. Separate from incompatibles. Containers should be bonded and grounded for transfers to avoid static sparks. Storage and use areas should be No Smoking areas. Use non-sparking type tools and equipment, including explosion proof ventilation. Containers of this material may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (vapors, liquid); observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product. Do Not attempt to clean empty containers since residue is difficult to remove. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind or expose such containers to heat, sparks, flame, static electricity or other sources of ignition: they may explode and cause injury or death.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Airborne Exposure Limits:
- OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL):
ethyl alcohol = 1000 ppm (TWA);
methyl alcohol = 200 ppm;
ethyl acetate = 400 ppm (TWA);
methyl isobutyl ketone = 100 ppm.

- ACGIH Threshold Limit Value (TLV):
ethyl alcohol = 1000 ppm (TWA);
methyl alcohol = 200 ppm (TWA), 250 ppm (STEL);
ethyl acetate = 400 ppm (TWA);
methyl isobutyl ketone = 50 ppm (TWA), 75 ppm (STEL);
gasoline = 300 ppm (TWA), 500 ppm (STEL), A3 - animal carcinogen.

Ventilation System:
A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures below the Airborne Exposure Limits. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area. Please refer to the ACGIH document, Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent edition, for details.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved):
If the exposure limit is exceeded, wear a supplied air, full-facepiece respirator, airlined hood, or full-facepiece self-contained breathing apparatus.
Skin Protection:
Wear impervious protective clothing, including boots, gloves, lab coat, apron or coveralls, as appropriate, to prevent skin contact.
Eye Protection:
Use chemical safety goggles and/or a full face shield where splashing is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.

isopropyl alcohol is undrinkable, as is butane. I'm not encouraging people to do denatured alcohol extractions - but the drinkability of the solvent doesn't have much to do with it.

As earlier mentioned, it should evaporate off when the ethanol does - that's why they add it, so you can't just easily distill the denatured alcohol to get tax free booze.

But I woudn't use it either.

Actually, most IRrelevant post. You aren't going to be drinking it, or even breathing much of it for that matter...

(also, methanol has a LOWER bp than ethanol, so by the time the ethanol is gonefrom your product, the methanol should have long evaporated)
