I always cringe when I see that this thread has been bumped.
PLEASE EVERYONE: be sure the solvents you use for resin extraction do not contain harmful substances!
IMO this thread should be locked and an advisory warning put up as a sticky.
Here's why denatured alcohol is safe to use, if used properly:
It evaporates clean and leaves no residue on clean glass. Denatured alcohol from Home Depot even SAYS "CLEANS GLASS" so it can't leave any residue. Methanol and ethanol evaporate at about the same temp.
I do advise however, that you bake your ISO or denatured alcohol in the oven at 200*F until it stops bubbling. This will ensure all solvents are purged out, and any remaining water vapor (from ISO) is removed.
But so far the end product is identical, yields per method are identical, but denatured is cheaper, easier to find, and has no water in it unlike most ISO alcohols. It evaporates a bit faster in the oven because of this.
So a bump for the thread, if you have evidence that ethanol/methanol/isopropyl alcohol have some foreign and invisible contaminant then by all means please share, but people have been making this stuff for decades with little incident. If you can taste any chemicals, you didn't dry or purge it enough!
