Hey owm, I would recommend the HPS ballast with a 400w Phillips Ceramic Metal Halide bulb. You will have to keep the bulb a lot farther away but the penetration and spectrum is much better. If your temps rise any, you will want to improve your ventilation though.. how many CFM is that fan you're using?

Che, thanks for responding...My fan is 165 cfm , an Active Air 4". What's the standard for venting a 400?

I like the idea of a 400 as I can probably upgrade the ballast and bulb, but at the same size--shouldn't affect my design.

My concern is obviously cab temps and light bleaching. Is 100/sqft too much?

Im in a 2x2x4with a 400 and it is wonderful!! thats 100w sqft.

I use an active air 265 pulling through a cool tube 4 feet of duct and then push into my scrubber.

With this set up I run only about 1-2 degrees aobve ambient.

You could run a 600 in a hood with decent fan installed and do pretty well. Going to bump up my little test bed to a 600 as well.

jnugg- your room looks similar to mine. i assume the tubes coming up from the floor are air intakes.. do you have a fan supplying the fresh air or let it flow naturally.

Here is my first 400w HPS grow.. only used CFL's before.
These are C99 F2's, about 36 days in 12/12 now, pics are 5 days old from day 31 (sorry).

Colas are a bit small they were progressing nicely up to about day 25 or so when they slowed down alot.. pH in soil went too low and i think that's why they're a bit small, last feed was 9.0 ph, runoff about 6.5 or so, so it should be ok now, I'll try to keep ph at 6-7 for the remainder of their life, starting flushing soon.. trics are 50%/50% clear/cloudy now.

Next grow I'll be making better use of the light with SCROG and I'll keep the ph correct thru the grow cycle, it should help yields a fair bit.. making mistakes is good for learning, bad for yield..

Also this bud is a little leafy, i don't know why, but I'll try to find a different pheno, it smells good, but it's not the pineapple pheno.. I'll see how good or bad it is after i cure and smoke it.
