150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

I have a dumb question that probably gets answered a lot, but here goes anyway.

How far should the bulb be from the plant tops when running a 15OW? Is there really that much of a difference between 2" and 8" with regard to light penetration? I realize the light covers 4 times more area when the height is doubled, but what about the actual light output + penetration; does that decrease 4x too? Thanks!

p.s. I'll post some pictures of my girls sometime soon, maybe on Wednesday when Week 6 officially kicks off. :p !!! I have three bag-seed chicas flwring right now, one vgged for 5 or 6 weeks topped LSTed and tortured to life before the flip was switched, one a clone taken and put into 12/12 as soon as it rooted, and one more going 12/12 from seed that's as old as the clone. I'll have to post some side-by-side pictures of all three for comparison's sake. The seed plant is a surprisingly stout little jumber.

FiveSevenZero - I'm with rkrone on this one. I usually hang out in the 4 to 6 range as well. But yes, just a few inches can make a big differnce in how your plants respond. My best advice is always to do the back-of-hand test. If your hand is comfortable staying there for a full minute, then your plants will be as well.

Good Afternoon Crew - Here she is at day 6 of changeover. Looks like I finally got all of the issues under control and as a result, she's responding very nicely. She's got great color, vigor, and fast a fast maturity rate. Now lets see if I can keep her going this way. I'm in dire need of a good "Mom".

150w hps noob question

150w hps noob question

Hey guys tizzle here. I dont know much about hps so im counting on ur thoughts. I have a rubbermaid closet grow going and im currently running 6 26w CFLs. I figure with that im already running a little over 150 watts and since i have pretty big rubbermaid cab i need more like 250 watts. So in the way of saving money and getting better results im thinking a 150w hps might be better suited to what i need? Here is my grow journal u can kinda get some info on my sitch. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=55986 And right now since my plants are so small i gotta raise em pretty high to get to the CFL light and its killing my ventalation because i got a box to prop the plants up and its kinda blocking the intake. So i did some checking around and found this light on ebay. Whatcha guys think? http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-150-watt-HP...ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting Well thansk for the info

tIzZLEmOnSTeR - The light looks fine, but you can do much better on price. Check out e-conolight.com. You'll be able to pick one up for about a third the price. Many of us have bought from them and they work great.

Hey 150 watters I'm looking to make a cool tube what should I use? I went to wallyworld to check out the lantern covers and the only brand they carry were coleman , they were a bit small and oddly shaped. Any suggestions?

tIzZLEmOnSTeR - yes the lights from econolite are cheaper but the one from htg is just more convinient because its already set up. and its already air coolable. i would personally spend the money on it and save the hassle.

but that hood is really nice and i mean ur gonna spend lets see 40-50 bux on the light then wire it and get a a/c hood or a home made cool tube. im jus saying IMO i would spend the extra 40 bux to get everything preassembled and ready to use. but thats just me.

I've always gotten just as much satisfaction from building and tending my garden as from the meds it produces. By building something you become intimately familiar with it, which is a great thing should anything ever need fixing or modding.

Many 150w HPS Club members have used the e-conolight solution, and some of them didn't even own a screwdriver when they started. They were rewarded with a great learning experience, an effective light, and a feeling of accomplishment. If you are looking to contain costs while you learn, you can't beat it for my money. (and believe me, I can afford any light I want).

With members, like sugabear, just waiting to help, and tutorials already written up, http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=36344 , anyone need not be nervous.

One last point to consider: The unit sold on ebay looks very nice & will surely grow fine buds. However, the ballast is attached to the unit which will increase the temps inside your box by quite a few degrees. Make sure you address this issue, if it is one, as you proceed.

All of this is JMHO. If there is anything I can do to assist, all you need do is ask. And if you go another path, I assure you my feelings won't be hurt. We are ALL here to offer help and accept it whenever we can.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB!

hey tizzle

yeah htg supply sells a nice - ready to grow 150 - Bulenath actually has one of those inside his U-2 cabinet/TV stand. He was able to remote the ballast fairly easily even though it comes attached to the hood. Hopefully he'll stop by and tell you more about the lamp... Anyways I also got a 400 from the same place and I was very happy w/there customer service and the lamp sent worked well.

As many have told you e-conolight is another cheap alternative [edit: cheap as in inexpensive - not cheap as in cheaply made] and wiring it up is really easy. There's also a pretty easy tutorial on how to build a reflector from a sheet of aluminum commonly available at home depot.

as another option you can always purchase a 150 at lowes as a compact flood lamp and convert it this will be more expensive but if you wish to do cash and carry one of the only options.

supa I was able to find a huricane lantern thing at a craft store and it was pretty good size for the 150 - definetly best option - bake-a-round is a little too big for the 150. Personally though I found the cool tube to be un-necassary and I just have my bulb bare with a reflector. Buds grow within 4" w/o a problem.

congrads on the 4 girls - now is when the real fun begins! don't forget to take clones! - they really have come along nicely since the hurt looking little seedlings you started with.

hey R_G - you know I love the burmese - it is my favorite - in fact just got done :bongsmi: some :D I know that VISC still sells it and Reef is supposed to re-release it from a new p1 generation - might be a bit pricey but I'll put it this way - burmese is the only strain that I grew out the whole pack because I went back to it after trying other strains.

pictures later tonight...

suga

edit: pictures
grapefruit

whole bucket with 150 bulb

a couple of burmese bud shots...

I scoped the burmese tonight and she's showing a good amount of amber - think I will chop tomorrow maybe :chin: It's tuff - as I have mentioned this is going to be my last grow for a while and I just am kinda letting it drag out - but as you can see she's totally done pistal-wise.

ok last edit - - I was just remembering that I started these clones in 12/12 a few days before march 1st - so we're at about 9 weeks which is right days or so now - also saw a few nanners from the grapefruit - saw these on the seed mom around 9 weeks too - not too much to worry about at this point - but can be a problem if you're growing another plant earlier in flower - otherwise I like the g-fruit - after 2 months cure is when the flavor really comes out nicely.

Since none of the girls needed any H2O today, I decided to take a few pictures in front of the looking glass.. These were grown from bag-seed, the big one was 41 days from the switch, and the little one was 38 days from the switch. I estimate it's going to be a while yet.. 10-12 week finish for these plants, which look more sativa-ish to me.. I'll be happy when that day comes, that's for sure.
