150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

HK423: It's very possible, but you'll need to set up your cooling system very efficiently. You should plan on some sort of sealed light chamber, either a cooltube or a sealed off glass plate, with a dedicated fan or two. WIth that small of a space you should put your scrubber outside of the space if at all possible.
I'm using a cooltubed 150 HPS in the same space (a medium sized roughtote rubbermaid) with an external scrubber (air being pulled through a 1" layer by a $12-15 wallyworld Lasko desk fan) and some PC fans for circulation. I'm able to keep temps about 12* F above ambient for the most part.

As irishSoCo mentioned...it's doable with the right ventilation. I've managed to squeeze a 430 watt HPS into this space (top of cab dimensions: 22"W x 18" D x 32" H) with a 265 vortex directly cooling the lamp in a DIY hurricane cool tube. I had my doubts initially but to my amazement...it's working great. Plants have been in there for a week now and seem to be exploding with growth. I'd say about 5 to 6 degrees above ambient temps. The 150HPS in the lower section is within 2 to 3 degrees of ambient vented by 95 cfm Cage fan through DIY hurricane cool tube.

Update @ 21 days 12/12 for the top cab (430 HPS). Bottom cab went 12/12 about 10 days ago (150 HPS).

Top cab: 2 Ice, 1 Big Bud (back right) and 1 Aurora Indica (front left).

Bottom cab (150 HPS): 6 Ice and 1 White Widow.

The last 150 finished like this: (add a week to this photo).

I'm expecting the 430 to yield much larger, denser colas. This is my first run with the 430 in such a small space so stay tuned...we shall see :chin:

As for yield, unfortunately I don't own a scale...personal use only (tend to give alot away). End result after things dry is usually around 2 large glass jars. Hmmm...maybe I should pick up an electronic scale. Anyone know where I can pick up a reasonably priced/accurate scale?

Same as the top...22" W x 18" D x 32" H. I did a little modification to the top cabinet from pics on page 116 (I believe thats where I jumped in here). Initially my hardware (balast, fans, electronics) were in the bottom 3rd of the top cab. I've since relocated everything either on top or behind the cab itself to create more usable space in the top section...to fit that 430 HPS as I had more girls then I knew what to do with.

Those are inside dimensions BTW...usable space. Minus the width of the DIY cool tube leaves me with about 27 vertical inches to play with. If these ladies stretch to high I'll spread them to the side creating a bowl/half pipe effect. I think there done with their stretch though as they seem be crowning off.

Little clearer shot (crappy camera/photographer) of last round.

As you can see, the 150 alone can produce some quality weed if your patient.
Sorry to the strict 150 users here. My bigger lamp is simply an experiment at the moment to finish off this last grow as I'll be shutting the cab down over the summer.

FiveSevenZero nice buds forming there - already frosty and good and healthy - if you can take them 10-12 weeks I am sure you will be rewarded - in fact I bet they'll be pretty good at 9 weeks.

HinduKushed_423
18" is way short - as rasta said if you flip to 24" high might be better.

Hawaiian808
- nice work with the cabinets - I'm interested to see the difference between the 430 and the 150 in the same space - I expect you will get some really fat buds in the 430 cab. one question - where do you veg now?

So I made the chop tonight of my final crop for a while here's some pre-chop pictures

top view - burmese at top - grapefruit darker leaved and smaller in bottom of picture the 150 was smack right over that one bud in the middle of the screen.

side view you can really see how much smaller the grapefruit is

another profile style shot

and three of the five branches on the burmese - yummy yummy dense stinky sticky buds :D

and finally a macro of the a burmese bud that I'll post big

and with the axe tonight I am done for a while - I love the 150 and I love all my 150 club brethren and I won't be going any where but it's time to take a rest.... now before anyone gets worried I do have a bit of bud put away for a rainy day plus this harvest here :sasmokin:

HinduKushed_423, I mesured from the floor of my cab to the bottom of my 15OW bulb.. I get 26". I have 42" hight total. Ventlation is by way of a Dytn 265, riggd up about as simple as it gets:

I was thinking about getting a 250W for the next time around. Given what Hawaiian808 is doing with a 430W, I think my space would take to a 250W nicely..

Thank you Sugabear for the kind words! Your plants look awesome.. and that stash is amazing!

Good to see active people in the 150w club, I love checking in and seeing cabs being constructed and plants flowering beautifully under the 150w bulbs.

sugarbear.......wow, i hope one day i can grow buds like that that fuckin burmese is beautiful. im watching another person grow the VISC burmese on the CC forums and she has them lookin like godesses but i like the way urs form alil better then the way hers are but all in all wow......lol

Sugar...you look like your prepared for armageddon.lol
Like you, I've managed to procure a plethora of dankness for the months to come. Plan is to stay shut down after this last run till next Sept/Oct. As to the "where to veg" question...answer is the 150 section. Takes 10 minutes to set up a few fluros to get them started and then hit em with the 150. I figure I can start up to 20 seeds in solo cups weed out the males, determine the best pheno's, develop a clone stock with the bubble cloner and then were back in business. I've got Sour Diesel, Mazaar, Shiva and Mango to play with next round. I lose about 2 months in the process but that's life. Add the "SWC" hydro to the mix and I hope to be posting pics up to your level by Thanksgiving.

Well I got the lantern cover . Came out to about $5. This thing feels like it will shatter if I drop it on carpet. Hope it'll hold up to the heat.

Next stop is home depot.

can you buy a remote ballasted 150w hps. For some reason ive heard its hard to find 150w that are remote. And all the ones i can find on the web are not remote ballast.

well maybe thats a sign u need to make it remote? have u looked at sugarbears converting a security lamp to a remote ballasted grow light? its mad simple dude. and the reason i expect u cant find them remote is there is not much of a need for them like the one from htg u were looking at. its not remote cuz its air cooled there for it really isnt needed but if u felt like doing it im sure you could. good luck bro.

There are Chinese ones such as this: http://www.besncn.com/eng/detail.asp?id=5&cid=30

I found someone on ebay who distributes them, plus all the other HPS ballasts listed here:

http://www.besncn.com/eng/prod.asp?id=30

which include 70W, 100W and 150W up to 600W

PM if you want the ebay handle of the person.

I've got no idea what the quality is like but I was quoted $90 Australian dollars (roughly $US70) plus $A25 shipping. The seller has 100% ebay rating.
