the russians are beating themselves. the fighting in bahkmut shows the russians repeatedly attacking entrenched defensive positions with human wave type assaults.
russian losses right now are 500-700 men per day.
the Ukrainian forces are not fighting for control of bahkmut, they are fighting to exhaust the russians.
and to deplete the manpower and munitions.
it takes more resources to attack than defend.
soledar is not an important strategic point. neither is bahkmut. the roads and railways that supply them are important strategic points
the Russians were supposed to be preparing for a large spring offensive. now they have to wait because they are not equipped and don't have enough people.
the spring offensive is not going to happen.
meanwhile, the equipment keeps arriving. the Ukrainians are getting stronger.
the russian troops are ill-equipped, one group is complaining that they don't even have enough rifles or ammo. out of food and water.
warehouses full of russian munitions are being blown up. the ukrainians just discovered another large cache of 152mm ammo for the big guns. this time in the kharkiv region. in an area controlled by ukraine for 4 mos.
the winter is closing out and the energy systems in ukraine are still functioning despite the attacks on the grid. so putler just wasted a bunch of expensive, hard to replace munitions in another failed effort.
the entire southern front from kherson to kharkiv is a continuous dug-in defensive line.
almost no movement by either side in 4 months. little pieces of dirt going back and forth with no real progress made.
putler is trying to take and hold as much land as possible before this war goes to the negotiating table.
sometime in the spring the Ukrainians will launch an assault designed to cut the russian line in two from Zaporizhzhia to Melitopol.
putler had announced another mass mobilization but it's not happening yet because the russian people don't want this war.
young men are pouring out of the country in every direction.
nobody is volunteering.
there is infighting between the wagners and russian generals. prigozhin is blaming shoigu, the defense minister, for all the failures.
it really doesn't look good for russia now. they sought to fight a war of attrition after the initial invasion failed.
but now they are the attrited instead of the attriter.
