I never had a sincere desire to burn a US flag until someone told me I might be criminalized for doing with my own property as I wished. Then, shortly thereafter, I sincerely desired to do so.

That defiant 'FUCK YOU!' being still lives in me.

The more someone foists choices upon me, or attempts to, when those positions have zero to do with actual General Health & Welfare concerns, but more to do with ideological mind-fucking, the more I still say, "FUCK YOU!!" and make a point of doing whatever in their face or view to let them know the impotence of their 'desires.'

I see targeted school vandalism and other civil disobedience coming soon to a supposedly non-denominational public building near you. And maybe even overdue.... by a couple of decades or so...

Someone challenged the prayer portion of the Assembly's procedures in the Kenai Peninsula Borough a number of years ago and won a case that stated EVERYONE has the right to have time in their prayer process at the beginning of meetings... including the Satanists.

That trusty equal protections under the laws and the 1st Amendments rights to religious practices and equal protections under that law, too.

So, if you're attending one of their Borough meetings down that way, and it happens to fall on THAT night, be sure to bring your cauldrons and eye of newt... Gingrich, maybe?

Am inclined to believe Cannon would qualify as a caldron stirrer.

But I was hoping for good witches, like Wiccans. Not the evil witch of the SE USA.

Once past the Bill of Rights, there are other Amendments to consider.

#13 for instance:
AMENDMENT XIII

Section 1.
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

The suppression of reporters has been going on here for the past several administrations,
it appears that they are picking up the pace. Don't recall the name of the outfit that
rates how reporters are treated in various countries, but I do recall being quite disappointed though not at all surprised that the United States rated about a third
the way down the list as opposed to having been in the top ten- as it once had been.
I wonder what percentage of young people would be aware that as vice President,
Dick Cheney had once bragged about how much money was spent to manipulate the
overseas press, specifically so that the US press would then pick up and reprint
the disinformation as intended.

Reporters Without Borders rate the US down at 55 out of 180 countries. The title of article says it all . . . 2023 World Press Freedom Index – journalism threatened by fake content industry

Thank you most kindly tobedetermined, pretty sure that is an indicator that we
are and have been headed in a less democratic direction at an ever-increasing pace.

The US is not alone. Much of the world is heading that way as conservative governments - including their far-right factions - get elected and then start moving the goalposts to stay elected. Turkiye, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy etc etc. Canada will move conservative in the next election and France is looking like it as well. We all know the routine . . . two steps forward etc . . . as long as we don't drift too far back . . .

I whole heartedly agree. What we are seeing is global resurgence of, as the press claims,
right wing authoritarian leaders. Stated more accurately, we are seeing a global resurgence of fascism.

WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Reaches Plea Deal With U.S. Government—Set To Be Freed From Prison

KEY FACTS

Assange has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiring to obtain and disclose information related to the national defense, NPR reported.

Assange is also expected to be served with a 62-month prison sentence that equals and will credit the amount of time he has been imprisoned at a high-security prison in London, according to CNN, which noted the deal means Assange will return to his home country of Australia.

News of the plea deal, which is pending the approval of a federal judge, comes a few months after President Joe Biden said the U.S. was “considering” the end of Assange’s prosecution.

--Am glad that he will be able to be released, but this looks far more like a victory
for the deep state, then for anything akin to personal liberty. Gry
