Companies like Amazon are hard to compete with because they are oligopolies that pay no taxes because the government and economy is rigged for the elite. Not because of the free market. There is no such thing as a free market. It only operates for the peasants like your dad to compete amongst themselves.
Market competition is vital to a functioning capitalist economy. Who are Amazon's competition? It's like saying Coke's competition is Pepsi..... No! They have what is basically a shared monopoly on the market. If you tried to start a soda company up from scratch you'd probably get sued into oblivion by Pepsi/Coke's law teams, or you'd fail miserably, or you'd be bought out by Pepsi/Coke.
No doubt Amazon should pay more and no doubt you have to jump through hoops to make it when dealing with corporations that large. The fact that you call my dad a peasant though tells me everything I need to know about you.
