I never got around to removing the 3rd male that i bent over, with it catching some light since then it has grown enough that i might use it on the Double Chocolate Thai along with the other two, it is highly unlikely ill ever come across more of these. Looking at the leafs of all 3, id say it looks like the bent over one is a combination of the other 2.

As far as which male im going to use on the Ace Thai, i havent decided yet, they are a little younger than the others by a few weeks or more and need to develop further before i can decide, maybe ill use the two bigger ones, but really im favoring the way the more slender open one is looking. I'm thinking the bushy male might pass on some trimming troubles.

I plan on treating the females the same as others have been run recently, let them get about waist high and pinch the top out of them.
I pinched the buds back just a tiny amount on the honduras as it kept stretching towards the light a couple of weeks back, it seemed to help control the upward growth without supercropping them, so i imagine ill be doing that with these as well.

I think dubi mentioned elsewhere that trimming or topping fairly early is fine with some of his Thai strains; it’s the only easy way to manage them. Don’t quote me on the specific strain but just his “tips” generally in early veg.
The info on male selection is much appreciated as well. It’s a really important part of growing and selecting for continuity. It’s another reason I’ve gotta get more space devoted to selection/seed production ie: males. My limited experience has been MALES? Kill them asap
So growing properly has to include selecting good genes and as Nevils work shows, males carry some serious genetics that can elevate the results. Very intimidating but very cool as well. I’m still looking and learning

Found this in my notes (for the Ace Thai A5)

Topped Double chocolate thai a few days ago, and Thai a few minutes ago. The thai grew considerably overnight, and has some BIG fan leaves.

Stem rubbing the open structure male smells quite similar to the Ace Thai, where the bushy male has a much different scent to it, and is similar to what ive gotten with the Hazeman chocolate thai F4, and seeing the very branchy bushy structure i can clearly see the lineage of that male being the Drawohs chocolate Thai. Im not sure how to describe the drawoh stem rub, its more of a heavier smell. The Ace thai and open structure male (will call this one the old chocolate thai heirloom male) both have very light almost pleasant scents reminescent of maybe vanilla or something similar)
I believe i will use both males on the Ace thai, ill just keep the pollen separate. Maybe i should do the same on the Double Chocolate Thai as well. Looks like the female is a mix of parents, mostly open structure with the tighter internode spacing of drawohs.

The more i learn the more important i realize male selection is, and my recent experiences breeding chickens has helped solidify how genetics work a little better in my mind. I dont ever want to get to a point where I'm not still learning, and having interests throughout the plant world has helped me more in growing than reading any cannabis ever have, and i got my start learning in the forums many years ago

I see that every post!!!!!!!!! Your plants are happy and healthy. I think Tom hill uses chicken shit big time for amending
Loving your Thai and still planning my first attempt this year. I’m pretty sure the best thing for me is to choose ONE strain to grow and try to treat her right

Trying one strain and getting it right is one way to go about it, but i prefer learning on more than one at a time, some are just plain difficult and some are quite easy, so you could be running in circles trying to figure out whats wrong with what you're doing when in reality it is just a very difficult selection to work with.

The two remaining Thais that just went into flower, the branchy one has been topped, the other hasn't yet, waiting to see how it further develops.

The Thai has been spreading out, yet still growing really upright since topping.

I noticed last night the end of one of the branches looks to be pollinated by Ethiopian, so i took the Ethiopians out of the tent to finish and tagged that branch, kind of interested in how the offspring will turn out.

What criteria do you use for selecting males?

What criteria do you use for selecting males?
First and above all is vigor / vitality / overall health. I want it to have emerged and grown without issue, not being deficiency prone or weak growing.

Second is structure, node spacing, and sturdiness. I like having strong plants that can mostly support themselves, where all i really need is a single stake along the main stem mainly to control it from leaning over and tighten up some of the branches too. Node spacing, i dont want to select for super long node spacing.

Third, I look at days to maturity and sexual stability, and select away from the ones that show sex as soon as possible.

Id say those are the primary things i look for, and then secondary would be all the things that you discover during flower, like color changes, how well it produces pollen sacks and amount of pollen dropped. I haven't had any that show a lot of resin like you may see on forums sometimes, and as many of us know the best resin producers aren't usually the best smoking selections.

I do stem rubs just to see what i can pick up, but i don't use that as a factor, maybe if i had two identical males id use a stem rub as a tie breaker.

I haven't ever done that, just talking about smoking the pollen sacks?
I did order some Florel a little while back to reverse a male and see how it expresses as a female, haven't gotten around to reversing any yet though

Never heared of it before. But if it will reverse into a female then that would help when it comes to smoking them no doubt lol. Keep us updated when you do please, it would be interesting for sure.

hello here too,

i've got two thai chiang mai running. they are on 11/13 and approximately at day 70/80 of flower. there is not so much smell by now, but the resin is getting more and the calyxes are starting to get bigger.
smell is not strong/much by now, green, herbal, woody. reminds me of a green haze hybrid i grew and similar to another green panama haze i am currently running. we ll see, what will follow. the first one is seeded with nepal jam, green mountain grape and a pck male mix, each on a different bud.
greets and thanks
