Wouldn't you want an additional 10-15% organic matter to hit your ideal ratio of 25-35%?
Rice and pumice seems limited in om for later breakdown?
Would you fig botanical and compost teas to b enough for feeding microbes as the plan goes into extended runs along w root mass breakdown?
Mhmm, my mix is equal parts peat, aeration, and compost so I'll be hitting that 1/3 mark right off the bat... it'll increase as time goes on with mulching and leaves dropping down, as well as cover crops being cut off from light later in veg and performing their own chop & drop. I went a little crazy on the mulch (compost, straw, covers) on my first round, and when my soil test came back it read a whopping 56% organic matter. I attest most of this to the rice hulls, because that's all I used for aeration; regrettably. I did go heavy on the compost dressings as well, so that only added to the madness. This time around I'll keep it lighter, and may even go semi-light on the initial compost to peat/aeration ratios I drop on the soil tarp.
What do you think?
I'll be no-tilling in these for a while, so I don't really want much breakdown in my aeration department - I'll only add 10%-15% rice hulls if I add them at all. I'm a diversity guy so I'll end up adding a good 10% I bet. So 3% of my entire mix... which is only like 6 gallons out of the 200. I'm mainly adding them for the benefit of the worms I'll be adding once the pots are filled and ready for planting.
I like to feed with inoculation teas (EWC slurries) frequently during veg, and balance it out every now and then with a fungal dom tea. I've read that inoculation is the 2nd stage of plant health, so veg is the time to pack on the diversity in those teas. Drenches, foliars, the whole sha-bang.
