These are all Pinta Asturiana. It's a breed from Astúries (northern Spain) that was almost extinct along with other breeds in the 50s, due to the rise of the factory style chicken farms. Those use hybrids for maximum production.what breed? and how often do you need to clip the wings?
These pure breeds (landraces I guess?? ) produce less eggs but keep laying them for twice as long. They also should be better adapted to the outdoor life compared to production hybrids. I'm learning as I go so I'm just parroting what I hear from people in my town.
I also find the preservation part very appealing. Onne of my neighbours has a rooster of the same breed that's why we ended up buying these ones. So maybe one day we'll make them moms who knows I would enjoy that.
I clipped the feathers of one wing off each one, the first day they got here. From what I'm told once they understand it's their house and they feel safe there they'll be much less likely to fly away and clipping becomes unnecessary. Otherwise I think it's done once a year.
