So I was playing around and discovered an interesting new grafting method... check 'er out.
I think this might be how people do approach grafting sort of only I used a cut instead of another plant.

I took a small clone sized cutting and shaved one side of the bottom of the stem about a RW plug's length 1 1/2" maybe. Then I shaved about the same amount off of the side of a much thicker branch on the host. Slapped them together, secured it first with a piece of scotch tape to hold it in place then went around the whole thing with grafting tape. I wanted to find a way to graft with out the need for a bag to hold humidity. My thinking was if there's enough surface contact for the host to share its juice with the cutting the cutting wont wilt enough to die, and it worked!

The other nifty thing about this grafting method is that you don't have to remove the top of the branch from the host. So if the graft doesn't take your host branch would be pretty much be unharmed by the attempted procedure. I'm willing to bet that you could secure a second scion to the other side of a branch as well... it may be possible that 4 scions or more could be grafted onto the same spot around the right size branch of a host.

woops this next pic is upside down but you can still see whats going on.

Here's a picture of the connection with the grafting tape removed that shows that first piece of stabilizing scotch tape.

Here's the graft site with everything removed.

This graft attempt failed because there was way too much light hitting the scion but this picture shows pretty well what the method is. Only difference is that I would double the amount shaved off of the host and the scion. With a good 1 1/2" shaved off both there's a lot of juicy surface contact.

Thanks again for running this experiment and sharing it. Along with the grafting information it opens up some interesting doors. :D

Yes, thank you. I now have the information to graft better, I only hope to grok it all and find the success you demonstrated while making my Judy a MOMF. Currently Mother Judy is a Venom OG base with a branch of Cheese. Next graft will be a sprig of Alien OG. I have another VOG to experiment with before I try Mother Judy again.

Mother Judy after giving her a trim and new pot.

I hope to pur the Alien OG onto the branch to the right soon.

Great thread.
Updates soon I hope.

Simply exceptional, my friend! Do you see that sometimes from the most annoying situations the most interesting ideas can arise? Without the restriction of the plants, you never started that crazy growth ... haha
I'm just kidding, and I'm totally illegal here, so you're luckier anyway.
I'm really surprised at how well those plants reacted to multiple veg / flo metabolism.
One day when I have more space I will make myself a multi strain bonsai mom, grafting hemp is something I'd like to try :tiphat:

Douglas.Curtis - My pleasure friend.

Methias - For sure, I hope it goes well for ya. Try the side slice grafting method, it's pretty simple and easy and if it doesn't work the branch is still there and you can try it again on the other side of it, or you can try one on each side to increase your chances.

El Tigre - No doubt, the funny thing is I'm closer then ever to having my set up in full perpetual swing. Necessity is the mother of invention/discovery. The other hilarious thing is found it is that grafting comes easier to me then rooting cuttings.

Everything is still going good except in the last picture those shorter branches in the very front are of the GG Scion and they're pretty jacked up. At first I thought it was the stress of what I'm doing and maybe from a lack of nutritional priority or what have you.... then one day I realized they were covered in Russet Mites. rrrrrrr. My dumb lazy ass hadn't been spraying Lost Coast Plant Therapy every week like I should have. Now I'm spraying every other day to get rid of the infestation.

This has been a fun experiment to watch unfold. Sorry to hear about the russets we always get punished for being lazy in the garden. Probably rightfully so but it doesn't ease the pain none the less.

I'm staying tuned.

Thanks Everyone! Luckily I have not seen any mites on any flowers in the whole room. They seem to just be on the veg stuff.

Imakandi - True. Most welcome.

DiverDave - Chat? Unless you’re talking about my signature link in the Off The Shelf Retail LED bulb comparison thread then I’m not sure what you’re referring too. Maybe some one posted a link. Either way... Welcome aboard DD! Thanks for the kind words. :)

My air layering Veg Plant hanging off my MOMF has some roots now, so I buried it in 5gal of soil. It’s only got 3.5 weeks to get bigger till it has a flowering tent to itself, so I’m thinking I’ll probably need veg it longer in the tent. I plan to make some 16w 5000k LED strips from 8w SIL’s for side lighting for this plant while it’s still attached to mommy.

I don't get the two bulbs in the planter ?

Are they wired up ?

Have you got buried bulb sockets ?

Haha. No, silly goose. Those are just the globes I keep lying around. They’re just holding my plastic sheet “mulch” flat on the soil.

Ohh OK... Lol

I thought you built a fancy planter with uplighting with 16 Watts of heat underneath to warm up your roots and soil.

That would be pretty cool !!

You'd just have to completely seal the base and socket with silicone.

You'd have to use aquarium safe silicone though.
(the "tub &tile" stuff had poison in it to kill mold.)
