Quit Alcohol - Support Thread

Slipped up last week and took out a 24 pack of miller light. Don't ask me what made me snap; I don't know. Vodka and scotch was my usual ticket when I was using hard...god only knows what got me buying a case of beer at the gas station.

Anyway the next day I woke up and fell out of the bed. I couldn't walk; at all. My entire right foot was unusable. I somehow managed to get myself to urgent care and was diagnosed with gout. Apparently alcohol abuse, specifically beer, tends to bring it on. I thought gout was just for obese people etc...nope, apparently not.

I still can't walk but the pain is subsiding.

It's like god/the universe is telling me "...this is your last warning, son."

I suffer with gout, its not just alcohol that causes it, there's quite a list. I've still had gout and haven't had a drink in ages.mine is triggered often from curries, which pisses me off as its my favourite..
You can get it in any joint, big toes a favourite of gout, mines now turned a funny angle due to hardened crystals.

Did you have blood tests to confirm its gout?
From what you wrote you had a mild attack, a full blown attack the pain is excruciating and so bad will bring you to tears. Worse than having a baby!!

Did they give you colchicine for attacks and allopurinol for prevention?

Drinking cider vinegar and cranberry juice can help..

Wishing you a speedy recovery and hopefully you gonna stay off booze too

Day 66 for me :)

Thank you and congrats on 66 days!

They gave me a steroid shot of some type (I didn't have a mind to ask tbh) and a 14 day dosage of colchicine. No allopurinol, no blood tests to confirm.

It seems to be working insofar as reduction in swelling and pain. I still can't walk right however.

I love it!! It may seem like ages Mr. Fontazy, but days make weeks make months. Great job.

I am still a captive of the carbions, but now they are focused on spicy doritos.. and crave my snickerdoodle cookies.

Go steady on the colchicine,, 14 days is too long,, you should only use for 4 days at the most,, it does work well.

Foot pain is paradise,,hell is in your knees :(

I think its time for me to check in here and stop drinking again. I had previously quit for 5 years but started back up in February after my father unexpectedly passed away and I was the one who found him.

Since then ive gone off the rails, been drinking way too much, getting in trouble, associating myself around people who are no good for me.

This weeks been the worst though, i drank way too much at the start of the week, was with some idiots, who decided it would be a good idea to try take a short cut, followed them and managed to break my leg / knee. They ended up leaving me and i had to make it home by myself, went hospital the next day and they confirmed i had broke my knee. I had to stay in there for a few days, and im home now, but the pain is unreal, i never want to experience aything like this again in my life.

Needless to say, i think this is the wake call that ive needed, so i definately wont be drinking again for a long time. I think today is day 4 or 5 without a drink

Sorry to hear about your Father. One of my biggest motivations to actually quit was injuring myself when I was drunk. At 65 the injuries do not heal like they used to. I had broken a rib I think, definitely messed up my thumb way down at the bottom joint. The ribs are better, the thumb will never be, as they can't fix that damage.

I honestly don't miss it, but I am also going through a bunch of pot to compensate. It is nice to not injure myself, damage my new vehicle (old truck is a mess), and not be drunk all the time.

Edit Fri night. This has been a really productive week for me, landscaping around my place. Had a truck of lime spread out and a truck of chicken sh*t. The grass will be sown soon, and should look beautiful by spring. I hope. This my 3rd try in so many seasons.

Not drinking so much beer is how I am able to do all the work. High as a kite on cookies and vape, but able to keep on ticking.

Great news! You are tougher than you thought, I bet. I was wondering about how you were doing - just yesterday, as you hadn't posted up. The still craving part is strange though. Do you think it is the carbs, or habit?

I have no problems hanging out at the local beer bar, drinking water.

I quit drinking the day after the conference rivalry football game last November, and have gotten past the point of craving a tall long neck beer with ice crystals floating in the neck, outside frosted over from the humidity, and dripping down the label - not any craving at all. If I drink one, I will have blown my record, and proven myself to be a loser. I will not compromise with even one delicious swig. And yeah, it is weird being sober..

I honestly don't miss being drunk, or a drunk asshole, or getting hurt being an old out of shape drunk asshole. My weight seems to be steady at 220 (plus, then minus, 15 pandemic pounds), but my belt has ran out of notches to tighten. This winter I hope to have found a gym to workout in. The yard has been exercise enough this Summer.

Are you converting all the booze money to extra smoke, or still saving for a holiday, with the savings?

Edit 10/20: I am really glad I quit drinking all that delicious beer. Now, despite being totally "full-body stoned" all the time, I am able to look back on this year and see a whole lot of progress. I power through the buzz and get a lot of hard work done outside. It will be one year this Thanksgiving weekend. My health is better, I have more money, and I don't have a bunch of empty beer cans do deal with.

My carbions have shifted their desires to cookies and spicy nacho Doritos. Oh well, nobody is perfect. That's a weight and exercise problem.

A friend who comes by in the evenings as I am feeding the fish in the ponds (and eats a couple of my free cookies), is going to court today on probation violation for not showing up to the DUI stuff he was supposed to do. He has to lug an O2 tank that won't last through a DUI class, can't drive to the class anyways because he has no license, and besides there were WuFlu shutdowns. Judge should let him walk because he shouldn't have been arrested in the first place, and he is too messed up to be in a cell. He might get 6 months, and would lose his very modest singlewide trailer home because of it. Booze has been bad to him this year. He is broke, but still manages to get cheap beer at the dollar store. He has been like this the 15 years, and will die this way (or worse). He is my age (mid 60's) and too frail to do any work.

They are gonna let the guy completely walk if he can come up with $600 by Jan. It's all about money.

I hear you loud and clear.
Just today I had a conversation with a drinker friend about how shit being an alcoholic is.We both agreed being drunk all the time is just wasting your life away.

I feel fantastic to be able to say I don't drink alcohol anymore. Life is so much better now. Its my birthday on Sunday and I can't wait to enjoy the day sober,.

Onwards and upwards, 4 months 20 days sober, wahoo
