OUTDOOR GROWS 2023 -ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE-

Everything looks amazing as usual you grow them wild and free :) how do you deal with bug attacks?

I don't worry about bugs. I've got plenty of spiders, ladybugs, soldier beetles, dragonflies, birds, wasps, earwigs, etc. to chow on them. I've got thrips, leafhoppers, root aphids, spider mites, slugs, caterpillars, white flies, etc. I want them around because they attract predators. Can't have my spiders starving. Very rare for the pests to get out of hand. My plants outgrow them.

This year I've had something, maybe a cutworm, cutting new growth on a few plants. It topped my super ape, now it's got 8 tops instead of one. It worked in my favor. It's weird because I can't find the pest that does it. But it's minor damage, that's the worst that's happened. Losing a few leaves on a few different plants isn't a problem.

The strange brew has a heavier load of spider mites than usual but not enough to cause a problem. I'll give it an extra rinse down with the hose to blow them off. I've found that the indoor pests aren't able to get a foothold outdoors the way they would inside. Of course I monitor my plants every day, if something is getting out of hand I know right away. Slugs are a minor problem in the spring, I keep my seedlings in a protected area on my deck. Otherwise I don't worry about them.

My only real problem is botrytis. Nothing I can do about it. I've tried a lot of different stuff. The biofungicides are promising but don't work on the scale I need. When the entire garden is hammered by a storm and soaked, and the weather is in the 60-70 degree F range for a week. The flowers are going to rot. I try to select for early and for mold resistance but it's not a perfect solution. Powdery mildew can be a minor problem at the end of the year, a few leaves can get infected on my later plants. Overall I'm very lucky to grow where I do, very few problems and we have wonderful Mediterranean summers.

It's been around 90 the last few days, the plants are enjoying it. Gave them the last N for the year yesterday. It's a few days to a week later than usual. It's Agrothrive, 3-2-2, fast acting corn liquor and fish emulsion. I wouldn't give them slow release N like manure. I could tell they needed it, the last few days I've seen the leaves go a shade lighter. I also gave them 0-9-0, 10% calcium mineralized bat guano and 0-0-22 langbeinite 10% mag. So it's really 3-11-23. Mixed it in water in 5 gallon buckets. Poured it on then did a major watering with the hose to make it stick.

I can almost hear the leaves rustle today. Here's a look at my Royal Kush x Purple Louie.

Two of my best strains the last 10 years. Should finish by the end of September. Just starting to form clusters, she's one of my earliest. Smells great, should be wonderful stuff.

This Shishkeberry #3 is another one of my fastest. I tied her all the way over. The top is where the green stretchy tape is in the upper middle. She has dozens of tops, has turned into a massive bush. Here's a couple pics.

Mountain outlaw-- Nice samples! Flowers are coming along well where you are. My sample was a bit early off the Cheese x Hindu kush, and didn;t get a good taste yet. Can't wait until september!

Gumzi-- Sorry to hear about the disease and insects. Disease can spread under the right conditons especially on plants with less airflow where native plants are touching. I would try to push back some of the native plants for a gap so that there is better air circulation. Prune off diseased leaves/tissue and remove from the site.

Reveegetta--Sorry to hear about having to pull the CBD #1 medicine plant. Better safe than sorry though. That oil isn't cheap! Glad you have some plants in containers!

Reverend--I like that Shishkaberry #3, just taking over the garden this year! I'm glad you mentioned its a good time to cut off N. I put down some fertilizer this weekend around the one hungry plant, but the rest of the garden looked pretty well fed from the early August feeding. I was considering doing a half rate application in a week or 2, by the first of September, but I only will if they are showing N deficiency.

The homgrown flower smokes much smoother because of the N depletion and flushing. I never spray anything either. I have noticed more ladybugs than usual, probably because I have also noticed more aphids than usual. Its a balance. Read the plants, they will tell you if they are stressed. I usually squish a couple bugs at the garden as I inspect.

I deal with mold after harvest too. I have to do a better job of drying outdoors this year, and cut up the big flowers and hang them on hangers to get better airflow.

Lrus--It would be good to start watering weekly now to help the flowers build. The root system is probably build pretty deep since you allowed the plant to search for moisture. Pee bucket with a quarter inch hole is a good idea, thats old school. Would take along time to water. Needs to be more volume though to saturate the soil. :smoke:

Nice pink flowers! Is are they fragrant. Never heard of that one is it for smoking?
the flowers belong to the tobacco plant, which is where the tobacco for cigarettes and cigars is mainly obtained from. I have two plants because they usually repel pests. I also wanted to try to make some cigars with fermented herb (like a cob wrapped in a tobacco leaf) in this area they still make some famous cigars called “caliqueños” wrapped in leaves...
I have gone down to sniff them and they are quite tasteless, rude and not very perfumed.

@Eltitoguay how is the diatomaceous earth works ? i got some problems from 1/2 week ago with some moth/worms that gets into the stems/internodes very nasty shit.. not every plant got this but many got this disease in many branches . this diatomaceous earth works on plants that started flowerin or it shoud be only when in veg used?
It acts by contact and its action is purely mechanical (physical), drying and cutting: The outer layer of insects is lost by abrasion or absorption of the sharp edges of the small silica crystals that form diatoms, and when the insect loses the protection against water loss, desiccation and death occurs.
It should not be used if there is already resin on the flowers, as it will stick to it.
