Tutorial Organics for Beginners

I understand that it isnt a cut and paste situation, but Id like an opinion on my soil recipe. I have all these items, just need the ratios now. Ill be adding a couple items including neem cake.

33% Sphagnum peat moss
33% Red Lava Rock/Perlite
33% Compost/EWC mix

Alfalfa meal
Kelp meal
Fish bone meal
Crab shell meal
Oyster shell flour
Glacial rock dust

Optional:
Diameticous Earth
Peruvian seabird guano
Coconut Flour

The base looks good. Amendment mix is impossible to say without measurements, though I'd note that most of your proposed ingredients are N heavy.

1-3c per cubic foot is my general rule of thumb for total meal amendments, not including lime mix, DE, etc. Some go lower, many higher. Depends on your outlook.

I am planning ahead for a run of ACE Malawi. I read most of this thread over a year ago and have referred to it often. What I took from what I have read when using the initial recipes [I use LC's Mix Blood/Bone/Kelp ver with EWC/Molasses Tea] is basically add extra drainage [perlite].

Can anyone give me any other specific information on growing this more advanced/longer strain? I have started using pH stable clay pellets near the bottom of my pots and mix some in my nice strains pots.

Question: Should I modify the recipe in any way for light feeders like the Malawi. I mean the point is the plant takes what it needs.

thx:bump::bump:

Pretty sure you need some pulverized dolomite lime in there [2tbs to gallon of your base] but maybe something in your recipe handles the pH's balance?

nah, oyster & crab will be plenty of Ca. Mg is in the kelp & glacier in abundance

it's 1/2 c per cubic ft {1 TBS/gallon} for everything except the minerals. fish bone & crab meal are redundant or should be halved if both are to be included

oyster & glacier should be 1c per cubic foot {2 TBS/gal} & you should have some local rock dust or basalt dust too

of the extras, i might dust w/ a little diatomaceous earth but not amend w/ it {it works when it's dry. as an amendment it does provide silica}

the guano & coco flour are nevermind items. coconut water is a different matter ~maybe read up on that

Couple quick questions about this mix. I read through quite a few pages...but not all 300+ pages.

"LC's Soiless Mix #2:

6 parts Pro Mix BX or HP / Sunshine Mix (any flavor from #1 up) / Fox Farm Ocean Forest or Light Warrior
2 parts perlite
2 parts earthworm castings
Powdered (NOT PELLETED) dolomite lime @ 2 tablespoons per gallon or 1 cup per cubic foot of the soiless mix."

1. Can you germinate in this? I was always under the impression that FFOF was too hot for seedlings.

2. Does it need to be cooked or sit for a period of time before it is ready to use?

1. Yes you can germinate in this, its just a base soil mix.

2. No it does not need to be cooked or sit, this is the base mix I use along with the guanno teas, works great man :)

Good Luck.

ok guys i got a couple questions. i ordered all this coast of maine shit online bc where i live its not possible to get anything good. my closest hydro shop is over 2hrs 1 way,so i want to make sure i get this right. i have happy frog on hand for the peat moss. i want to use this as my base:

33% Happy Frog potting mix
33% Perlite
33% coast of maine lobster Compost/ worm power ewc

Nutrient amendments:
1cup of kelp meal
1 cup of stonington blend coast of maine plant food
1/2 cup neem meal
1/2 cup seabird guano
1 cup insect frass

Mineral amendments
2 cup basalt rock dust
1 cup oyster shell flour
1 cup gypsum
1 cup greensand

my main questions for the 33% of my base can i just measure out like 1/2 of 5 gallon bucket of happy frog,1/2 of 5 gallon bucket for the perlite and 1/2 of 5 gallon bucket of coast of maine lobster compost/worm power ewc? i also bought down to earth vegan mix & dr earth vega mix that i will do a top dressing with about mid way in the season outdoors. the reason i went with the vega mix as my top dressing is bc im a guerilla grower and i cant use fish or crab once my plants are in this mix bc the critters will fuck my shit up. thanks guys

here is the plant food contents of the stonington blend from COM:
Made with lobster, crab, fish and kelp meal plus worm castings and other important natural ingredients, this exceptional fertilizer will super charge the biological activity of our compost, giving vegetable gardens a high calorie energy boost. It is also high in calcium (6%) to help boost plant vigor and immunity.

yeah, you can part it out like you say a bucket/unit of each. isn't happy frog already mixed w/ perlite & some nutes? idk about coast of maine it's not around here just like oly mountain fish compost isn't over there. have seen people say they like it.

avoiding FF products means you don;t have to worry about their choice of amendments & random hot mixes

it's good to be cautious w/ store bought compost/humus since it can be a little wonky. mixes w/ 3 peat 2 drainage 1 humus are fine also {a 5 gallon bucket, 2/3 bucket & 1/3 bucket}

RECIPE #5
Fish and Seaweed (This is sooo easy)
1 capful is 1 TB or 15 ml.

For veg growth…
1 capful 5-1-1 Fish Emulsion
1 capful Neptune's Harvest 0-0-1 Seaweed or Maxicrop liquid
1 gallon H2O

For early flowering…
1 tbs. Neptune’s Harvest 2-3-1 Fish/Seaweed
1 gallon H2O

For mid to late flowering…
1 tbs. Neptune’s Harvest 2-4-1 Fish
1 gallon H2O

This is the combo I'm going with, and I'm pretty sure I've got everything down. Just wondering...how often should I be feeding with the fish/seaweed as opposed to plain water?

I'm going to share my fundamental soil recipe here with everyone since it might help somebody:

Use your choice of ingredients just follow the basic outline. Enjoy :)

I recommend mixing compost with two different products, and later amending with organic all purpose fertilizer and ag lime.

First, use an organic material for water retention, like peat moss or coconut coir. I personally prefer coconut coir.

Second, incorporate an aggregate, like pumice, perlite, or vermiculite. I personally prefer fine pumice.

A general mix would be 1/3 compost, 1/3 coco coir, 1/3 pumice.

Then, add a cup of each (fertilizer and lime) per 25 gallons, or 2 cu.ft. of mix.

The all-purpose fertilizer should have numbers around 5-5-5 and it will have plenty of fertilizer, minerals, and microbes in it.

Cook soil for about 4 weeks before using it.

Friend of mine uses #5. I haven't tried it personally, but seems to work out okay for him. His issues don't seem to be nute related if ya know what I mean lols

After reading through the first 100 pages, I have a question. When he says "1 gallon H2O", is it just plain water or do I need to be using EWC/Molasses teas in conjunction with the Neptune's Harvest nutrients?

That's how much of each "nutrient" that goes into a gallon of plain water.
