happening baba! hope you had a great 4rth of july
did you go out and watch any fire works?
we ended up chilling at home and had a friend over
we also got the fried chicken at the store but the mrs had also thawed out soem breasts in case we wanted to grill so i made my own home made fried chicken too the other day
we also got a bunch of wonton wrappers and a can of crab meat; we were going to make crab rangoons, but after the double dose of chicken we were kind of fried out
maybe we will also have to make a chick pea and potatoe stuffing and make some samosas!
grinding all the way brother
you are right and it does seem like there are a lot more good to very good qbs in the league right now
mahommey just signed a big deal but it looks like a very team friendly contract in a lot of ways
from what im reading the chiefs have a ton of outs and can cut mahomes at any point and avoid paying "roster bonuses" that constitute a lot of the o money in the deal
i havent read over the whole think ( at least not stoned) so im very itneresting in hearing your thoguths
speaking of stoned, we made a new candy this weekend
a friend and i were brian storming new eatable creations (yeah a real think tank) and he found a recipe for butterscotch candy
turns out we had most of the ingredients at the house so we went ahead and tried it
it tastes nothing like butterscotch
but it does have this awesome honey flavor and pack a nice kick
hope your week is off to a great start and just get better from here my man!

My neighbors had a little impromptu fireworks show, the trees blocked my view but I could see some of it. Didn’t most cities and towns cancel their official fireworks shows, because of covid/social distancing?

Hehe, the jewel osco had 8 pieces of fried chicken for $5, and we picked up two packs of those along with some sides and chowed down with the dogs, so that was a good 4th of july meal. We also have egg roll wrappers, and could do a crab Rangoon (just need crab meat) or a samosa like thing (with chickpeas and potatoes if we had them) so those are good ideas as well. But ur right, sometimes u gotta chill with the fried food, eat too much grease I can almost feel my arteries clogging up in real time…

Yeah, I think mahomes is only making 15M more than goff over the next 4 years. The thing is, his contract isn’t tied to the salary cap, so as salaries go up (tv revenue is expected to double in the next few years) that 45M/yr avg might actually be underpaid in a few years, so he might renegotiate halfway through. Also, his salaries guarantee a year or two in advance, like a lot of good QBs (tannenhill’s deal is similar) so even if he gets hurt one year, the team can’t really cut him the next year since his salary is already guaranteed – for ex, his 2027 salary is guaranteed by march 2026, so he gets badly hurt in training camp in august 2026, team still has to hang onto him all through 2027 since his pay is already guaranteed. It’s a good deal for him, plus his total guarantees for injury are 140M (I think the next highest is goff or wentz at a little over 100M) so he’s got security and the chiefs can plan financially around his deal, being assured that he’s tied to the team for a long time. And ur make a good point too, if he gets permanently hurt or declines, the chiefs can get out of his deal with a year or two of notice.

Ur new candy sounds awesome, who doesn’t like a good butterscotch? Werther’s makes some good ones. I wonder why yours didn’t taste genuine, did you use enough butter? I think there’s actual butterscotch artificial flavoring, like vanilla and almond flavorings, maybe that would have helped? But yeah, honey flavor is good too.

yes, that was part of the thing a friend was talking about
how mahomes contract should be a % of the teams overall salary cap
in some ways that would be good for both parties, the chiefs know mahomes will eat up x% of the cap and they have the rest of the money to build a team with
mahomes gets a raise with a rising cap and his pay is in line with other top players at his position
i cant imagine a 20something y/o guy making almost a half billion dollars will be complaining about his money, but you are right about how in a couple years this deal will be middle of the road
/will mahommie go to the chiefs and demand more money or is he going to be the kind of guy who plays under a team friendly deal so the chiefs can add in other areas?
we will definitely be doing the rangoons this weekend; maybe we will get some take out too and really make our own buffet
there were only three fireworks displays in san diego this year
/blame it on the covid
two were in the same city and one was held in a city close to where we live (poway)
it would have been a mad house to try and go to either of the shows so we just hung around the house and enjoyed the night
i love butterscotches but these candy dont taste like butter scotch
the recipe we used called for honey and thats the predominate taste
we used rum extract but we could have also added the vanilla too
they are really good, like hard candy bit o' honey candies but we will have to find another butterscotch recipe

I remember when peyton signed with the broncos, he was getting around 18M/yr. 8 years later, Russell Wilson is making almost twice that, at 35M/yr. So in 2028, are the highest paid qb’s going to make 70M/yr? It’s almost mind boggling to think about, but if mahomes is making an avg of 45M/yr, and the other top qb’s are making 60+M/yr, then his deal would be considered ‘cheap’, assuming he’s still elite. But it’s nice that he locks in a lot of security now even if he winds up being underpaid down the road, and it's good press for him and his agents that he's signed the biggest contract in sports history (for now).

He said a few months ago something to the effect of he doesn’t want to cripple the team financially if they cant afford other good players. I think he realized at Texas tech that no matter how many stats he put up, they were usually at a talent disadvantage to bigger programs and weren't going to win much. Now that he’s got his cheddar, it’s all about winning, especially super bowls. Maybe he and andy reid can make a run at brady and belichick’s 6 rings?

Yeah, maybe cut out the honey next time, the butterscotch candy recipes ive seen used sugar, brown sugar (or corn syrup), butter, vanilla, water, etc. Just let that sweet creamy butter flavor shine through. But yknow, so long as it tastes good and gets you blazed, it’s all good…

they definitely bring the buzzzz!
we are calling them honey beezzz and so far people like them
its like being able to suck on honey and feeling high afterwards
i hear you about mahomes not wanting to eat up all the cap so the team can build around him
its a smart move and could end up being way more lucrative in the long run with his outside endorsements
i think he does a few commercials now and has deals with a shoe company and who knows what else
by winning he can rake in the sponsorship dough while still earning a nice paycheck in the nfl
its gon'be on tonight bruh
got a bunch of pork ribs this past weekend but dident have the time
i put them in marinade last night and am going to hit the grill with them later this afternoon!
we are going to do them toscino style, so it will be that sweet asian style bbq, just a lot bigger
cant wait for dinner and hope you are having a great day my friend!

Is it like a hard candy version of Bit o Honey? Remember those, the honey flavored taffy like candies? Those are good, and of course, the main thing is it gets you high as *uck, which is the whole point.

Ur right, being on a winning team is worth a lot more in exposure than being the best player on a bad team. Most footballers don’t earn much from shoe deals, not like b-ballers, but mahomes got a ketchup commercial (he famously loves ketchup on everything, from mac n cheese to steak), he’s horning in on Rodgers state farm commercials, maybe he’ll get a car commercial or Gatorade. I think peyton still gets a bunch of money from endorsements even though he’s been retired for 5 yrs.

How’d the ribs turn out? I haven’t had ribs in ages, pork prices have gone up a lot but I think theyre back to normal now. And ribs are a perfect summertime grilling food.

the ribs were grinding my man
i used a package of the toscino seasoning on them but could have used a bit more for that sticky asian bbq
what i got was a dry bbq (no sauce but the flavor of the rub) that had a slight sweet and tangy taste
the flavor of the pork really came through which was nice and i threw a few wood chips on for the extra smoke
thats funny because they almost always have pork ribs on sale here in socal
whats hard to get are beef ribs, often when you can find them they arent worth the price
yeah man! thats what they are like, hard bit o'honeys
there might be something in the honey that increases absorption because they seem to pack a little more kick than the caramels we made from the same butter
they are good but we are still on the fence about making them again
hopefully at this point in mahommes career he is more interested in winning
he is the first .5B player in history so im sure he wont be hurting for money at this point
in some ways petyon is still the face of football and he has a ton of brand appeal
who know, maybe mahommes with his funky hair could soon become the new poster boy
i just wonder if he can challenge the goat for most super bowl rings
so i hear jj.watt isnt interested in playing with a face shield
lets hope there is a way to play the game but still keep players safe

Yeah, I was going to ask you if you used any sauces on the ribs. Im partial to KC Masterpiece, it’s a good all around bbq sauce, not as thick or sweet as sweet baby ray’s, better tasting than most of the Kraft bbq ones. But dry ribs with that good smoke flavor are very good as well.
I’ve had beef ribs before but honestly prefer pork ribs: spareribs or baby backs. Theyre just smaller and meatier to me, beef ribs are so big, and not as tender, it’s like the brontosaurus ribs from the flintstones in comparison. Although if you cook them low and slow enough im sure they can be very soft as well.

Honey is a great natural sugar, has antibacterial properties as well, so maybe not surprising that it’s got some natural synergy with herbal medicines.

I think every pro athlete, once they reach financial security, are pretty much just focused on winning. I mean, that’s why they play the game, right? Im sure for this upcoming season the chiefs will be the preseason #1 team, especially once chris jones signs his franchise tender. But the ravens, steelers, patriots, maybe titans and colts and Texans and Bills will be some tough competition in the AFC. But mahomes throwing to kelce, hill, Watkins, hardman, and rookie RB clyde Edwards-helaire is a nightmare matchup for even elite defenses. Like the niners in the superbowl, you can shut them down for 3 quarters, but theyre capable of scoring multiple td’s in minutes if you let up.

I hope there’s football this season, but im not surprised a lot of players aren’t a fan of PPE during games. How can you maintain peak athletic performance if you have trouble breathing or seeing? The ivy league has already canceled all fall sports, including football. Other smaller schools have delayed football as well. USC (California) has already decided to continue online classes for the start of the school year. I guess we’ll see what the major conferences decide what to do with college football this month. They may delay it to the spring. That might be nice, once the nfl finishes we can focus on the college games…

i haevnt heard anything about the ncaa moving the football season to the spring
isnt that when baseball would normally be in swing?
i would be all for it and would most likely watch the games to get over that football jones you get after the super bowl
i havent heard from other players about how they feel about wearing face covers but im sure watt is not alone
i dident think about all the other things in the honey and you could be right
if nothing else it tastes really good
i like ribs wet or dry
i like the kc masterpiece and bullseye, plus the sweet baby rays
we also get this sauce called stubs that is really good
i hear you about how beef ribs can be kind of xxl, plus there is often a lot of bone in there
if they are on sale i might pick them up but we usually get pork
im thinking about throwing a pork shoulder in the insta pot this weekend and making pulled pork sandwiches and maybe rolling up some pork rolled tacos
we will see what the mrs has in mind for the weekends menu

Well, the ivy league might do spring football, but who the heck watches those games? Occasionally an ivy leaguer might make the nfl (fitzmagic, an OL or two) but it’s very rare.
The Big Ten announced they’ll do a 10 game conference only slate this fall. I expect the other major conferences to do something similar.

JJ watt was saying that early in his career he tried out a helmet visor in training camp, and got rid of it quickly after he had trouble breathing in it, and that only covered the top half of his face. But if everyone wears a full face shield, everyone will have the same ‘disadvantage’ so it evens out? Maybe they’ll have to sub players in and out more often, give them a chance to catch their breath, get some oxygen from a tank, and clean off their face shields.

Ive had stub’s a couple times before, it was strange to me, im so used to sauces being sweet like ketchup but stub’s, at least the regular kind, has almost no sweetness to it. I guess it’s more of a basting or ‘mop’ sauce to use during the cook than a ‘dipping’ sauce to use after it’s cooked?

I haven’t had beef ribs in ages, if sams or Costco doesn’t sell them I usually don’t buy it. But u got me thinking if I see a good deal on some might have to pick it up, if nothing else the dogs will get a kick out of those big brontosaurus ribs.
Ive actually made a pork shoulder a couple times recently in the instapot but pressure cooked it for like 40mins, and it wasn’t fork tender. I guess I have to use the slow cooker function? Haven’t yet used the insta for slow cooking, I have a big 5qt slow cooker that I use for that instead, can fit more food…

I made some grilled cheese sandwiches using mayo instead of oil or butter on the bread, they came out well if a little dark (i do like a good toast on my bread).

Also made some yogurt marinated chicken breasts, the dairy tends to char a bit but they were good as well.

how did you like the grilled cheeses? those look exactly like the one the mrs makes
it toasts up nicely and has a little different taste than butter but its super easy to spread
those chicken breasts look awesome! what type seasoning did you run with on those?
usually when we use a yogurt marinate we go with the middle eastern palette, things like cumin, garlic and 7spice (pretty much all the traditional middle eastern spices in one)
i like the char is nice on those and you can see they are still plump and juicy
looks great my man! how did you round out the meal
agree that the ivy league is not know to be the most competitive group of teams but the big-10 would be fun to watch
not up to speed on the college divisions, what would you say were the good ones?
have any plans for this weekend? the boy is going camping with his crew this weekend and we are going to head up to the mountains next weekend
the heat is on here in saCal and i will be nice to get away to elevation

They were good! Didn’t taste that much different to me than using butter or olive oil, maybe a little crispier crust, but otherwise it worked well.
I mostly used Greek style seasoning, just salt, dried oregano, black pepper, lemon juice, the Greek yogurt… that’s about it I think. Marinated it for 2 days, so longer than I wanted, but the meat was tender, and not too soft. I think one time I marinated shortribs with kiwi for 2 days and the meat was mushy afterwards, that was too much…

We’ve been cutting up the chicken breasts over rice and beans, and I made a chicken gyro sandwich yesterday as well. Still have plenty of chicken left so we’ll be eating this for a bit.

The best conference for football is the SEC, followed by the big 10, big 12, pac 10, acc, big east. Pac10 announced a conference only schedule yesterday, so they’ve followed suit. Hopefully we’ll get some decent college football this year, I know Ohio state and Clemson, two of the best teams, had to suspend football workouts because of an increase in covid positives among football players. This doesn’t bode well for nfl teams, if they start working out together and covid starts to spread, the team’s going to have to shut that down quick.

It’s been consistently hot here as well, 90F and high humidity for the past 2 weeks. It might get down to the 80s for the next week or two but with that humidity it still feels stuffy. And nary a mountain or highlands around to escape to! No plans but just a bunch of errands and stuff, running around. The usual…

the chicken sounds awesome
i think the enzymes in the yogurt soften the meat, ive never tried kiwi but weve used papaya before and like you said you have to really keep an eye on it
one thing i like to do with left over grilled chicken is to make chicken salad
i get down with the chopped onions and pickles and celery, you need to have those crunchy bits in it
the mrs likes to add things like nuts and dried fruit to hers
90 is hot and the humidity makes it stick
growing up i loved the heat but as i get older i enjoy the cooler temps more
we are having a tropical pattern with a lot of moisture from the gulf of mexico hanging around and there might the t'storms in the mountains
i hope it sticks around till next weekend, nothing like that monsoonal flow to make things interesting
it looks like even with the conference only schedule, kicking the season off might be tough
like you said, its the practices that will be the first hurdle
/how are you going to social distance when you huddle up?
there might be a few players who can step right in, but for the majority of the guys, especially the newer players/underclassmen they need the reps
stay cool brother and have a great weekend!

Yeah, I can honestly say I don’t think ive ever made chicken salad before. Ive made tuna salad a few times, and ive eaten it a lot at restaurants, but the chicken salad is something I hardly eat. Not that it’s bad, it’s very good actually, so maybe I should try making more of that. You just put it on regular old white bread, maybe a slice of cheese, and that’s ur lunch? You ever put grapes in it, I think ive had chicken salad before with small grapes in it, adds a bit of sweetness to the mix.

I always figured around SD humidity usually isn’t too bad, but I guess around the ocean and the gulf and the mountains, not to mention el nino, you get all kinds of weather. Still, you don’t get the snow and cold in the winter, so that’s always a plus.

We’ll see how it all plays out once official practices and training camps start for college and pro teams by the end of July. If all the participants are thoroughly tested and covid-free at the start then maybe they can get to the season without any delays. Im worried about the lack of a quarantine, the players wont be in a bubble, they’ll get to go home and hang with family and friends and might get infected and then bring that back to the team. Baseball and basketball should start by the end of July also so we’ll see how those sports keep infections under control.

there is still a lot of work out before football starts and i hope they can reach some kind of agreement that works for everyone
it will be tough to keep the player safe and socially distanced during the off hours
its up to them to do the right thing, but that isnt always the way things work out and it just takes one person to shut down a whole team
being close to the ocean we have a pretty steady humidity, usually between 40-70%rh
sometimes we get the tropical moisture off the ocean/ gulf and it feels like honolulu or acapulco and other times we get the dry desert air and the humidity drops below 20%
/thats when i get shocked by everything
we still have the best weather in the country for the most part
so it looks like they closed the campground we were heading out to
im super bumbed but we are working on a plan b'
/checking other sites for openings and considering going onto blm land
the thing is its way too hot in the desert right now where there is a lot of good places (death valley just set a record for high temp)
regular white bread works just fine for chicken salad and i like to use those kings hawaiian breads too
i guess like any sandwich, good bread will always make it better
the mrs likes to put sweet stuff in the chicken salad, nuts berries and stuff like that
i like mine more savory and i just stick with aromatic veg and the mayo/ mustard
its a great way to have left over chicken and you can make salads, wraps, or stick with good old sandwichs

There’s already a report of some nba player who broke quarantine to get some mcdonald’s and now he’s going to be quarantined for another week. Lol, I know theres no in&outs in FL but surely there had to be some better fast food worth another week in ‘lockup’.

So Oakley designed a new fog-proof full face shield for the nfl. The lower part of the shield has holes for breathing, but apparently it stops droplets – I think it’s a two layer part, both layers have holes but the holes are offset from one layer to the next so it should stop the moisture, if not the air. Hopefully it’ll be enough to prevent transmission if a player plays while contagious but asymptomatic.

Yeah I think ive heard SD and Hawaii are considered the best overall weather in the States, very temperate winters and usually not super hot during the summers. LA has the same type of weather probably but the air quality is much worse.

Yup, seems like in socal, the further away you get from the water you run into that desert (palm beach, Joshua tree, vegas) and, well, it’s the desert during the summer. When even the lizards and bugs are hiding during the day, you know the heat is rough. What do they say, that you should carry plenty of water, and turn back to your car when you’re halfway done with your water? Because you definitely don’t want to run out of fluids and then walk all the way back in ridiculous heat, you could pass out from heat stroke in less than 30 mins.

Did they close the campground because of lack of business during covid? I saw a camper for sale for pretty cheap on facebook messenger, have u ever thought about getting one? But even then, you still need a campground to set it up.

The woman mentioned chicken salad recently so im going to have to make some now, but like u said, there’s different things you can add to it, im somewhat lacking in veggies now. I really should carry more bell peppers and stuff like that on hand, usually I only have onions and potatoes, sometimes a tomato. For veggie intake we usually just do bagged salad and fresh fruit, I don’t often have a lot of fresh veggies on hand for cooking unless ive specifically planned for a recipe.

peppers and celery are great additions to chicken salad, but you can always just use a little relish and some chopped onions and get a great dish
the nba player much have dinned in, it would be hard to get covid going through the drive through
but thats the kind of thing that can derail a whole team and i hope he is doing ok
we might get a camper one of these days but i like sleeping in the tent
they closed the campgrounds because the stupid governor is closing things down again
but hes not closing beaches or other outdoor activities so i dont see the logic in closing campgrounds
/camping is a socially distanced activity
you are so right about heat stroke being no joke and right now the temps get you in trouble if you are not careful
the offset holes in the double layered face mask is a good call
that sounds like it could work but im sure some players will still say its too stifling
hope you guys are having a great week and enjoying the summer baba'

Yeah, carrots and celery keep well in the fridge too, and along with onions you can make a mirepoix for soup stock and such. My thing was that I would always buy a bunch of veggies (spinach, cucumbers, peppers, etc), and I’d use like 10-20%, and the rest would rot a week or so later. It might have been my fridge too, I have a better one now so it tends to keep the perishables longer. But I do have pickles (no relish) and onions so those will make good additions to a chicken salad. Ill be sure to post pics if I do make it.

Ive often wondered about how safe drive thru food is, the cashier holds out a plastic bin with your bag in it so they don’t touch it (cause they have to handle money and cards), and presumably the kitchen workers who actually made the food were gloved and masked up. I got a pizza at little caesars a couple months ago and the cook wasn’t wearing ppe, but I think that’s ok when the food still has to be cooked, although whoever slices and boxes it should be wearing ppe.

Yeah, for a ‘blue’ state Cali has seen a big increase in new infections, I guess a lot of people weren’t masking up? And maybe the governor was under pressure to open stores and such back up sooner than was advisable, and that backfired? But daddy Trump says that if we stop testing, we’ll stop getting more reports of new infections. That seems… technically correct, if somewhat misguided.

Ur right, camping is way better for social distancing than going to the beach, but I guess they tried to close the beaches and that didn’t work out so well. Is going south to Mexico an option, or did they close the border? Talk about irony…

I think half the stadiums in the US wont allow fans during the pandemic (Chicago, philly, Cali, etc) so im not sure how that’s going to work out for teams, I guess if the bears play away games in TX or FL they could play in front of fans, but home games will be dead. But im pretty optimistic sports will restart soon, including football, so even with a lot of changes at least we’ll have something to watch on tv again.

ill say the governor was under pressure to reopen and i think he kind of jumped the gun
now its much worse
mex is not any better and i have no desire to cross over; even before the covid
/mexico used to be a lot of fun even tho you were on your own for the most part
now is worse
a lot of businesses went to great measures to reopen the first time, spending money on ppe, barriers, etc only to have the rug pulled out from under them after we saw huge spikes in covid cases
this is most likely the last straw for a lot of small businesses who cant afford to go into any more debt to remain afloat
/especially considering that they most likely wont see any real profits for the rest of the year
its a full blown shit show and the toilets are clogged, but no one is willing to flush and do the real dirty work
celery is great to keep around the house and last a long time
a favorite snack of mine is peanut butter and celery so it dosent last long around here
cucumbers are another good addition when you want a nice fresh taste
last night we had pasta and i made this salad with a jar of four bean salad and fresh diced cucumbers
it came out super good, light and fresh tasting
its going to be weird how some stadiums are going to allow fans and others wont
im all for simulated crowd noises but it wont be the same
/maybe they can take the sound track from previous games and just replay those?
im all for getting back on track and hope we can have football this season

Yeah, big corporations have the wherewithal to withstand tough times, but mom and pop operations don’t have big cash reserves or stock sales or huge lines of credit to fall back on. The federal govt is trying to help with paycheck protection programs but even then, I heard most of the ‘bailout’ money is going to big corps, not small biz’s. But hopefully most of your favorite restaurants will still be around, theyre allowed to remain open even when dine-in isn’t an option.

I wish I could say I snack on veggies but I reach for a bag of chips when im feeling peckish. Yeah, I need to eat healthier, and having a supply of fresh vegetables would help. Still, when im watching football, im not reaching for no carrot and celery sticks, im going for the wings  But ur right, 4 bean salad is actually pretty tasty, ive used it before as a topping on salad, adds a nice sweet flavor and soft texture to crunchy salad.

So the 1st rd of testing revealed 72 nfl players are positive for covid. So like a little over 2 per team, on average? Doesn’t sound too bad, but again, without a bubble to keep players isolated during the season, who knows if someone is going to get infected during their personal life? Doesn’t it take a deep nasal swab (very uncomfortable) to determine if someone was recently infected?
