Marsh Madness II

Fo sho! I Just read all of the swamp threads i could find. I Have learned quite a bit tonight! Have to go back out in the marshes / swamp to answer my questions i have. Correct me if im wrong... Swamp tubes- used where there is standing water like 6 inches or so and use rubbermaid containers or 5 gallon buckets where the ground is really squishy and moist and cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket?

Swamp Tubes

Hey, Dr. Dutch, check out my grainy shots of some hard-core deep-water swap tubes at high tide. Just finishing up some California Orange Bud, and she tastes fine, though not much like orange/citrus in my opinion.

Only problem I encounter in the swamp here at the equator is spiders who will cob-web up the plants till the buds rot if give the chance. That forces me to visit more often than I'd like, to do battle with the web-spinners.

I would recommend Cali Orange to anyone in a rainy climate where mold is a problem. There has been torrential rain here for weeks and the mold on these Cali Orange plants has been relatively minor and easily stopped by removing the few affected buds quick.

Hey Swamp Thang, can you tell us more about your set-up..? What media do you use, how tall are your containers, yield per container, etc.?

peace,

Those are stacks of old tires, Prank, each with a wider truck tire at the bottom and 3 car tires sitting on top of that. They are all tied together with nylon rope, and also tied to a frame of 2by4 lumber that is now well under water with the weight of 5 stacks in a row. A few of the stacks are topped witha plastic bin with the bottom cut out and filled with the same soil mix.

The tire stacks are filled 2/3 of the way up with coconut husk to wick up water, and the soil that fills the stack to the top is a mixture of worm cast earth, fermented cow manure and some masonary sand to make it a bit granular.

I only found out here at ICmag how much easier and lighter the swamp tubes would have been if they were simply large-daimeter PVC plastic tubes, but I'd alerady muled in all the heavy building material for this set-up by then. At least those car tires will last for many more years than PVC without falling apart, and I've used them for 3 years of harvests already.

The water level varies a full 3 feet from the dry to wet seasons over here, and as you can see, it is possible to paddle a canoe right up to the planter when the river is in full flood. So far no plants have drowned yet, so it turns out those stacks are just the right height to stay moist but not get flooded at high tide.

I usually start off with 5 seedlings per planter but generally wind up with one or two after removing the males.

Damn swampthang! That is so cool that you can grow plants like that espcially canoeing right up to them! HAHA! Next year im going to do something very similiar to that. But they arent going to be sumerge in water. The area is like mushy soil when you walk your foot sinks in... So i think im going to dig couple inches down fill with peatmoss and then get rubber maid containers and cut the bottom out and fill it with more peat and soil. You think this would work?

Also how much do your plants yield?

Dr. Dutch your idea of the plastic containers with the bottoms cut out will work well in the marshy ground you describe for sure. Sounds like what Tirs, the guy who started this thread, has done in his marsh, except that he is using grow-bags, from what I can see in the pictures.

I've never really weighed the harvest yet but I would guess a couple of ounces of dry bud per plant. The best producing variesties I've tried so far have been Kali Mist from Serious Seeds, and California Orange Bud from Nirvana.

I need to do an update, sorry been busy! In the mean time here is my review of AK97 from another thread:

I pulled 9 zips off my two AKs not including popcorn or the bud that got hit with mold. One came down about 2 weeks early the other was ready but could have fattened up another week. Heavy yielder for sure!

I got two distinct phenos. One smells like piss and has sativa nugs that are absolutely covered in pistils. It has a heady high and is much more mold resistant but unfortunately started to die early.
The other plant smells like sweet sweet dank fruit and tastes the same. It yields huge with fat stacked calyxes but is susceptible to mold. Both plants make fluffy buds that break up well and are nice and potent.

Nice looking buds tirs. How many time do you think you watered this season? Do you have to water a lot when the ground is like a marshy condition?

Thanks again to all that stopped by.

BC- I think you should give marsh growing a try, the one I grow in is very small.

Dr Dutch- I had to water about half a dozen times this year, my plants are in grobags. They sit above the ground and the roots don't go into the marsh. The environment still helps me water though. Normally the ground is muddy but during rains it floods several inches or more and this completely soaks my media better than I ever could.
