Marsh Madness II

Yo tirs from the look of your pictures it looks like you found a big area of that like tall elephant grass or whatever its called and made a path way towards the center and just made an area in the middle. Am I correct? Because thats something i might do next year.

Hello everyone sorry for my disappearance. This was a great year for me with a memorable harvest. I still have 2 plants outside trying to finish up even though there has been some frosts this week. I can't dry at my safehouse at the moment but as soon as I can I am bringing down those plants and marking the end of my 2007 outdoor. It was certainly a successful one and I proved to myself the efficiency of a marsh grow. I estimate my final weight between 4-5lbs but that would have been double easily if it hadn't been for mold. The ISS, kush, SAGE, ak97 and g13xBB were all quality smokes, everyone who has tried them have been very pleased. Most of these were cut down early due to mold but each one was unique and held its own.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. I'll try and get a few more pictures and answer any questions.

phrank- thanks man, I can't wait to see your take on it next year, operation overgrow officially moving to a marsh near you.

pipeline- I agree 100% all that sun makes the plants grow like mad. And of course I'm planning out next year aren't we all? :D I am planning on putting in irrigation for the droughts of august, bigger pots with an updated soil mix and search for more mold resistant strains

From your pics it looks like everthing got pretty crowded towards the end ive noticed i usually only get that kind of mold / bud rot on plants that are to close together or they have fallen over a little and a few branches end up laying on top of each other some strains do seem to be more resistant but i think they are all succeptible to it.

iLuv2BlAzE- I am growing in a place where there are no flyovers looking for mj so I am not worried

grayarea- you're right they did get crowded but I don't think thats the main reason they molded. Even my main colas that stood all by themselves had spots of mold, in fact the smaller nugs faired better usually. I tried using serenade this year instead of SM90 as its much more economical and seems to be recommended here, not happy with it at all I will go back to the sm90 for sure and try some new strains.

Hey HK I bet the tubes take a lot of dialing in, I used 15 gallon gro bags. I think we're going to see some kick ass grows in 08

Can you describe your tubes, and why they did poorly? I think that by sharing our successes and failures, we can develop a set of best practices - a sort of method to our marsh madness...lol!

Some thoughts:

Are you familiar with the Cannabis Culture article on swamp tubes? The method outlined in said article advocates tubes that are 30" in height, which I think is important, as it will ensure that a large portion of the root zone stays dry. To this end, I will be working with 32 gallon garbage cans with the bottoms cut out. They will be buried 6" into the muck , which will give me well over 24" above ground. The "tubes" will then be "buried" in a mound of leaves. This last step is for camo, and too prevent the root zone from over heating and drying out. Also, I spent much of the last summer exploring a zillion marshes, and one thing I discovered is that all marshes have spots that are relatively dry, and that's where I'm going to concentrate my efforts. I imagine that if one can locate spots that are mucky, (as opposed to under water), right after the spring rains, then they would be most suitable for swamp tubes. I also think that the particualr media employed may make a substantial difference. For that reason, I will be using Pro Mix HP, which is intended for wet conditions.

Finally, Tirs I hope that you don't mind me momentarily hijacking your thread for the cause!

Hmmm.... ofcourse I can share my experience with this method. I have read the Breeder Brad article from/ on CC. And it is what inspired me to give it a try. I used 100lb grain bags filled with a media mix...Ive listed it here some place. Couple things i noticed...water level dropped significantly in the swamp over the summer. So my bags were not in standing water. And I didnt use a palstic lineing that BB descibed. So I think my plants suffered extreme root temps etc.
I agree and Tirs thread results are a perfect example of if they can do it...so can I! Just have to get out there and give it a run.... eventually it's going to be figured out. What i like about it. is the remoteness of the site's.

Does anyone know any good strains that are mold resistant, frosty nugs, high yielding that can grow in swamp/marshy environment?

I'm looking at -GreenHouse Seeds Northern Lights 5 X Haze Mist fem
- GH seeds Arjan's Haze #2 fem
-reservoir Quick Mist
-res Chem Haze Sour Diesel

im getting it on seedbay so if any comments on the seed i should use please post!

Burlap or Growbags

Burlap or Growbags

Hey tirs just a few quick questions for you:

I checked out your grow from 2006 with the burlap and I wanted to know if you liked the burlap or the plastic growbags better? Which one allowed for fewer amounts of watering? I'm going to be growing in wet areas like you this year and can't figure out if I should use growbags, burlap, or rubbermaid bins. I want to utilize the wet ground by having the roots grow down into it so I won't have to water much. I undestand roots can grow through burplap so could I dig them down in the wet soil so the bags can soak up more moisture and the roots could penetrate the bag? Or would burlap decompose too fast this way?

Thanks man, good luck this season.

I would be worried about mould or root rot with the burlap in a really wet area. Maybe you could setup some sort of wick system? But then again, the sanding water might not be very good for the plants. If it was flowing water, it might be ok.

As far as mould resistance goes, Early Sativa hybrids have worked well for me. Apollo 11, Cindy, Sag's Early Riser.

Those plants look great tho!
