MARLO's 2011 WINTER VERTICAL

D

DHF

All valid points Bro and sounds like the AP`s fit your situation to a "T".....it`s all about what works for you where you are DieselDon.......

I never worried bout runoff since it evaporated during the course of lights on , but with your concern about it as well as the bottom`s of AP`s sittin up couple inches , sounds perfect for yas since you don`t water/feed every day.....

Results are all that matters , and as long as you dial YOUR setup , then yields can only increase.....

Keep rockin dat shit Bro....DHF.....:ying:......

I was just hoping to find a grower here who is using a lightmover in a vert setup. either normal or yoyo style..here's what I was thinking:

I got this idea while I was reading Stealth's thread. I often wondered about using a light mover, but didn't think it would be practical in my small setup. Then I saw this pic and I had to try it.

Went to the hydro shop ad picked up a lightrail 3.5 kit. Gotta run down to the home de pot and grab a few things to make this happen.

Stay tuned.....

So the idea is that the weight in the center moves side to side like the light usually would, which pulls the lights on the ends either up or down, depending on the direction of the weight? Raising and lowering both sides so that they cover more vertical space?

Is that the ticket?

Marlo what is the size of your space.Couldnt find it in the thread.Im working with a small space 2.5'x2.5'x4' but only a single 400w.

I tried some airpots when they first came out , and as said they`re durable as Hell , but....in my nicest way possible to explain this......

The Smartpot rootzone`s breathe better , dry out faster , perform rootzone explosion more readily , but require more juice to optimize plant production over the course of the plant`s cycle start to finish IME....and then the airpots......

They`re plastic as in ALL nursery containers , but with cone`s and holes in the end of the cones that supposedly air prune the rootmasse`s and prevent "root spinning" like smartpots do that steals plant energy best spent creating upper plant foliage/budsites , but I didn`t see that with the smaller 1`s I was gifted to try out.....

Not saying they don`t work with the bigger 1`s that use more medium that I never tried......Only what I noticed from the SP`s doin their job , and the airpots didn`t perform as well in my setups.....

Smartpots air-prune roots , prevent "root spinning" that occurs in plastic pots , and I definitely saw increases in vegetation and budsite formation from the beginning ......

Airpots are taller , cost more and prolly last longer , but I ran smartpots for over 3 yrs , soaked em in pond zymes ta break down /eliminate dead tissue between runs , and re-used em every other run for long time with 512 plants runnin at all times .....

No spam over here , just personal first hand on-da-job trainin guys.....

Marlo....Respect.....

Hope I`m not imposing......DHF......:ying:....

Not to jack your thread Marlo but DHF what do you mean when you say." I ran smartpots for over 3 yrs , soaked em in pond zymes ta break down /eliminate dead tissue between runs" I use SmartPots and love them, you soak them between runs in Hydrozym or some kind of zyme to get rid of dead root mass?

Thanks again sorry Marlo.:jump:

I have thought about this also but I was thinking a solid beam with a light on each end and a pivot in the middle would be easier to build but I have not gone beyond thinking about it. Looking forward to yours.

Yep. I can connect the lights to my lightrail with cables, and put pulley's at each end to turn linear movement into vertical movement. Probably less than 1ft. travel motion for each bulb. It's pretty simple....in theory at least.

If you're gonna get a mover i'd imagine you could upgrade those 400 watters too...

I thought that too. Maybe entertain the idea of 2 x 6oo's in the future. For now, I'm not done maxing out these 4oo's.

Marlo, I think the light mover is an excellent idea.. Even if it only moves 1 foot or so, this is actually ideal. I think the biggest advantage of moving lights is creating different angles from a point source of light to penetrate the canopy and you don't need more than 12" to do this.

I also just realized how narrow your space actually is, your pics make it look much bigger with all those buds in there.. Wow you are doing one hell of a job with that space!!

Keep killin it Bro!!

wow Marlo is it really 2.5 wide? I remember reading that and thought it might have been a typo after looking at the pics.

..btw after hooking up my rail I don't think the weight is necessary at all. The motor's "wheel" that runs it along the track is coated in rubber ( I figured it'd be plastic ) and is a pretty snug fit and I didn't even think to account for the weight of the motor itself when drawing that up. As long as it's well balanced it shouldn't strain the motor at all...oh I also noticed with mine...It hit the door or something as it was moving and turned the other direction all by itself...I think it's a safety feature...or I was real high and I'm wrong. :)

I can't wait to see this in action bud!

Yep. The room is something like 32" wide I think. It was years ago when I first measured it. Too damn small, but you play the hand your dealt. :)

The yo-yo mover is slowly taking shape. Lotta trips back and forth to the home de pot. Pulley's, cables, clamps, etc....
This would probably be easier to do if the room wasn't full of plants.

I did the first minor trimming yesterday (day 14). I only took off the big huge fans. Maybe 50 leaves total for the entire room. The training is ridiculously simple. Grab a branch, put a pipe cleaner on it, and anchor it to the wall. These are some of the bigggest plants I've had, and theres still lots of space in there. The stretch is filling in nicely. Hopefully I won't have to move any girls from they're spaces. Not as much clearance under the scrubber, and 1 of the girls under it is a stretcher.

Pics soon...

Hey Marlo, just read the journal. Nice setup man, loved the way you put that orange mesh around the walls of your grow. I used have wires going to every corner of my cab before holding buds in place, wish id seen that a few years ago ha ha!

Whats been ur favorite smoke that u've grown out?

Keep up the good work

hey marlo I saw ya in that vert/mover thread and noticed you're now implementing it! sounds badass man.

My biggest problem was finding a pulley because I quite honestly just didn't want to rewire a new plug on the end if I had to cut the cord to fit in, I ended up having some old sailing gear and found a pulley that is working perfect so far. I keep forgetting to take pix because I only really work when its lights on and there is no way to get a decent pic with that intensity.

you dont even need the weight hanging from the mover unit if you've got 2 bulbs, hell I dont have a weight and I only have one bulb so all the tension/weight is on one side. still workin perfectly.

can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hey Marlo, good luck on the vertical mover.
Do you have any concern about additional wear and tear on the motor due to the modified application?
I was thinking of putting something similar with a couple of dr80's side by side but separate, on a flip flop 400.
It would really make my day if a vertical mover is an accomplishable DIY.
Great thread.
Great contributions.

if you've got two equal weighted bulbs on each end there shouldn't be any additional wear and tear. The motor actually has quite a bit of torque and 'bites' into the rail, it doesn't just hang there with a spinning drive wheel. Quite strong actually.

I've got a bunch of staking up to do, but will take pix this morning of my lil pulley setup for ya marlo.

Wsup Stinky. Congrats on your 1st post.
I wish I would've done that years ago bro. It makes the room seem so much bigger. Gonna be interesting to see how it goes.

As far as a favorite smoke... I've had a few over the years. My DSD is one of my favorites. I'm really happy with alot of the flavors from this last run. The OGBS and SFS are both winners.
My fav's keep changing as my growing improves, and my collection of genetics keeps growing. Hard to pick 1.

Hey Zen. I'm riggin up a pulley system as we speak.
I'm using an aluminum bar to keep the lights at an equal distance. Some $2 pulley's from the home de pot are attached to the bar. The cables will be run thru the pulleys, and the lights secured at each end. The light mover simply has to pull the attached cable from side to side. The mover will bear no weight at all.

My biggest issue right now is having to position the mover around this big ass scrubber on the ceiling. One good night worth of work is all I need to get this goin. Thing haven't been to quiet around here lately.

Do you have any concern about additional wear and tear on the motor due to the modified application?

No concerns really. I'm not making any mod's to the unit. Gonna work the same as any other mover, except it won't have to bear the weight of any lights, hoods, etc... All the weight will be held by the pulley rig. The mover only will be used to slide the cable.

I've got a bunch of staking up to do, but will take pix this morning of my lil pulley setup for ya marlo.

Thanks. I'd like to see it.

had to chop up the pic a bit but you get the idea

I wasn't quite sure if I should clamp the connection from wire to the mover so I double zip tied it with an extra that's got a hair more play left till it bears any load, just in case one of the two wants to get stupid.

picture.php

and heres a shot of how I rigged the pulley.

picture.php

you can use the $2 wal mart pulleys perfectly fine, just might need to cut the plug head off your lamp wire and re-wire it after passing it through the eye of the pulley, no biggie, I just didn't feel like doing it and had something else that would work :biglaugh: .

You can't really tell, but what the wire is sitting on is a plastic sheathing over a metal locking pin, I haven't even WD40'd it or anything and it spins just fine.

Only downside on my pulley is the wheel itself is smaller, putting a tighter angle on the cable, however its not even stressing it at all, by having my pulley able to swivel and twist a bit, it absorbs some of the tension/angle and doesn't have me worried about repeated flexing of the wire.

this was kinda thrown together with parts I had on hand. with $20 at home depot I know it could look a lot 'cleaner'.
