That's already the law in Alaska (if you want to carry concealed, you can, no permit required), though not everyone wants to carry a gun, and people who aren't proficient with a firearm, carrying one and using it, is a set-up for more unnecessary deaths.

Ea of us can decide if we want to carry a firearm(excluding the mentally ill). Some states make it illegal to carry, and nearly impossible to get a CCW. It's very clear that the decision is an easy yes for those that have the intelligence for it. Some neighborhoods are a kill or be killed situation. This thread is more about all these mentally ill people getting there hands on Firearms, than using it to kill many. Most mass shootings are carried out by people with Mental issues.

American mass shootings are a strange form of attempted social reform.

I would put the surviving shooters in a specialized facility, and study them, very publicly.

I have a feeling that there are some personal facts about some of the shooters that are intentionally hidden.

As the frequency ad severity of mass shootings increases it can only play out one way. That is, Who is in charge law and order or thugs with guns and once it gets to the tipping point where the frequency and severity are just too much, then there will only be one way to tip the scale back towards law and order. Change will be demanded by the vast majority. Several states have already enacted gun laws with teeth.

But I still think that a bunch of folks who aren't proficient with a firearm choosing to carry one, potentially results in more people getting shot who didn't have anything to do with a given situation.

Research shows that the average home-owner, in their own home, familiar with the lay-out of their own place, when facing an intruder, tend to empty their cylinder or magazine without ever hitting their target.

Those bullets are going some place.

In a public setting, adrenaline still being a factor for any shooter in a tense situation, experienced or not, the possibility of folks catching projectiles not intended for them goes upward.

I think way too many threads in the SC reveal some insight into the pervasiveness of one degree of mental health issue or another in the world, and in the US.

Edit: Like I've said numerous times before, I would hope that a person who was sitting on the fence before a vote to legalize weed, wouldn't come to the SC or other aspects/areas of the threads here, and read before voting. We likely wouldn't have the nearly 50% of the US approving of cannabis use that we currently do.

I loathe the day that every 'Darrel and his other brother Darryl' also are packing without being proficient or qualified, let alone understanding the threshold required to legitimize lethal force.

Add to that being in a 'stand your ground' State.

But I see those idjits in the stores already, with their firearms in Kydex holsters in plain view, openly carrying, on display, nearly every trip to town. Like bragging about the size of their testicles.

And I see that going no place good. With apparently zero idea on their part that it's a billboard of sorts, that, in the event of some serious badasses, they're the first ones going to get hit. And once that starts, and the adrenaline is flowing, it can become 'in for a penny, in for a pound'.

Even folks who shoot routinely for employment qualifications, under the influence of even moderate presence of adrenaline, fail the test often.

Three State Troopers here, Sheep Creek Rd, at a cabin, a couple decades ago, dealing with a suicidal woman with a firearm, having gone and gotten her a 'Happy Meal' at Mickey D's (as a demonstration of low-intellect, cynical and callous humor, just in getting grub to her), had a moment of tenseness, where the woman cracked off a single round (likely an attempt at suicide by cop), and all 3 cops opened up on her. Trained officers who routinely shoot to qualify.

The end result was that she was minimally grazed on her nose. That was it.

Again, those projectiles went some place.

shitloads of folks hunt with them. and what do you see evil in target shooting? others keep them in the corner next to their bed "just in case". myself, i would not hunt with one, too heavy to suit me, and too small of a caliber "in my opinion".. and i keep something a hell of a lot more useful next to the bed "just in case". ARs are now the anti-gun folks fave target because they "look bad", and idiots deliberately call them "assault rifles" or "weapons of war" when they operate no differently (one shot per pull of the trigger) than firearms in general use for decades.
