H3ad goes Coco

Been running the 6/9 and so far the results are ok.

My tap water sucks so im using RO water with calmag, but i think i probably should have been running more of the calmag.

The plants received dry kool bloom on the days rez specified plus a extra mild dose of liquid kool bloom on day 42. Also been adding 2/3 strength bud candy and full strength bud factor.

The plants are mostly blue dream.....

I'm running a recirculating system with RO water. Got a pile of nutes laying around, and have been trying to dial my nutrient profile on the angelfire site. Here's what I've got so far. Am I gonna run into problems considering my K and Ca are so high? Shootin for a profile that'll work through the whole run. FWIW, I'm still early in veg.

P-76
K-194
Mg-59
Ca-144

Great thread by the way.

Hey H3ad and everyone. Thanks for all the great info! I made the switch from DWC and Aero to Hand watering Coco. So much simpler!!!

Right now I have a Serious Seeds Chronic that is just over 1 week into flower. Every day I mix up 1 Gallon of water with 6/9 and a little ph down.

I want to run some numbers by y'all and see if this is on target.

I start with Tap Water:
7.8 pH / 150ppm

Add 6/9:
6.5 pH / 650ppm

Add pH-:
5.78 pH / 690ppm

Runoff:
5.76 pH / 1125ppm

Does that sound like it's on point?

Thanks!!
CnD.

Just wanted to make a note that after a year I finally have this dialed in at the moment but I am wondering what changes will occur later in flower and how I will need to compensate.

I had a ton of problems until just recently I ordered H & G and before the nutes even got here I got the problem fixed with 5/9, 1 gram per gallon epsom, and 1/3 tap 2/3 RO mix. This is all in smart pots with a 1/3 chunky perlite mix. Plants are FINALLY green as can be showing no real issues what so ever.

My goal now is to keep it this way. I'm wondering as I get later in flower if I should expect to need to back off the epsom or need more cal or what I will run into. I have the H & G I'm going to run side by side on a couple plants to see the difference. As of today I am 2 weeks in.

yea, i don't like that H&G doesn't put shit on their bottles.

i called and emailed Humboldt Wholesale (us distributor) and got an email back. that's how i know the 11% figure....that's for the coco formula. you should be able to track somebody down at HW.

Is that 11% (Ca) figure only for coco AB? Thought I read on one of these threads that this was standard for all their base nutes.

rez? adjusting PPM?

rez? adjusting PPM?

I've been reading this thread for months now. Its a great resource..nothing wrong with it.

The 6/9 ratio provides a key recipe of N-P-K values that are especially tailored for use in coco. Thanks to Head for figuring that out. What I don't understand is how to dial in this kind of setup. Surely not all plants at all stages are going to like that recipe. From what I've been reading, there should be a way to adjust ppm (or TDS) of the Lucas formula. Why not for heads?

Don't get me wrong, I've run a 6/9 setup in which I've hand watered coco and received great results. Now I'm seeking a more efficient way to feed, and hence a less maintenance grow. In other words; I'm using a reservoir.

In my research, it seems to behoove those using a res to watch ppm carefully and adjust the feeding concentration accordingly. Depending on grow cycle, and plant type.

I find it interesting that everyone is just 6/9ing from start to finish without adjusting or "dialing in". Is there not a way to use the same N-P-K ratios while adjusting the solution concentration for specific plants?

I know I'm using a res, but what about the methods needed to test runoff and adjust feeding when hand watering?

Wish some one would shed some light on this topic.

H3ads formula of 6/9 is easily adjustable. you can adjust the EC higher or lower by simply adding water to lower the EC or when you mix your water recipe use less water with the same 6/9 ratio for a higher EC.
EXAMPLE... for a higher EC, 4.5 gallons of water( tap, RO, or mix) with the same amount of nutrients you would use for 5 gallons of water. if you used 6/9 in 5 gallons you should be adding 30 ml of micro and 45 ml of bloom. if you add 30 ml of micro and 45 ml of bloom to 4.5 gallons of water and you get the 6/9 in a higher concentration. you can lower the EC by adding 30 ml/ 45 ml to 5.5 gallons of water. always adjust the pH after adding your nutrients. you just have to read your plants in order to get it all "dialed in".

Check out the formula modified for CES.

I'm using this right now and my girls are 14 days into flower.

Today they got there first kool bloom slam, I used the following.

6ML Micro, 10ML Bloom, 10ML Plant Amp, 14ML Liquid Kool Bloom, 5ML Mag Amped.

My PH came out to be 5.8, and it was 1250 - 1300PPM.

My Bubbas loved this mix, as the run off only measured 680PPM. These are month old clones.

My old moms that I'm flowering out had run off of 1000PPM.

Using this formula I'm trimming nightly to prevent overgrow.

I'm looking to adopt a sweetener or if possible I'm going to start introducing a little molasses.

I was wondering if any of you tried Air Pots at all while growing in Coco?

Highyas guys...

In the coco, I am now using 6ml/gal micro and 9ml/gal bloom which gives the nute profile:
N 97
P 60
K 105
Mg 27
S 41
Ca 97

adding 1 g/gal epsom salts to the solution changes the numbers for mg and s to:
Mg 67
S 61

The formulation looked very odd...
upon furthur research
the values i was given above are wrong...

the micro has no P
shoulda been K 1.3%

brb with correct ratio

**edit** GHE - 3ml micro /3ml hw micro /10ml bloom*

Now I'm a bit confused with these informations. I assume that the target values are the ones that I've bolded from the first quote. When I tried to calculate values, I ended up far away from those with this 3 / 10 set:

N 52
P 101
K 140
Mg 67
S 75
Ca 55

This one was with 500 ppm solution, so you can easily see how there are twice as much P to N. And in your target values the situation is almost on the contrary.

When I randomly selected 1 to 1 ratio it actually came really close to the target value:

N 104
P 60
K 102
Mg 40
S 45
Ca 110

This was 484 ppm solution and there were 10 ml both in 5 liters water. What do you think about the ratio here? I used soft water (regular) micro version.

And here's the link to the calculator for the ones who didn't know :)
http://www.eurohydro.com/resources.php?mod=flora_calc

Edit. Did you mean that we should add both micros here?

Last question. In the calculator there are three different nitrogen values. Do I have to add them all or just use the first on (NN)? :)

yes

add them.

Using the calculator there.

4ml micro, 2ml hw micro, and 10 ml bloom / 3 litres water looks like a great starting point.

I've done some calculation and here's my latest recipe for bloom. I use tap water so it will rise Ca levels. Tap water here is rated to medium-hard to hard water. How do you think this might work? I'm about to grow Bogglegum which, what I've heard, uses a lot of mg.

N 104
P 113
K 186
Ca 22
Mg 76
S 86

My target ratio was 100-100-200-60Mg, which is supposed to be good for flowering stage. Am I right? Is it the same with coco? There's one thing that I haven't been able to find and it is the ratio for vegetative state. How it should be?

Sorry if these are silly questions but I think it's always better to ask now than ask later in the troubleshooting section without any "know-how"..

I'm growing in coco and have recently switched from Smartpots to Airpots. Features I like are the easy re-usability and the elevation of the bottom of the pot from the run-off. The only disadvantage is a very slight bit of coco that filters out of the bottom and side holes while watering. However, this only occurs until the roots form a web to hold the coco together. I like them enough to state that I won't be going back to Smartpots.

I've been using smart pots for a few runs and I think it will be my last. From what I've experienced coco needs a more tapered pot to get a good flush by watering to run off.. Not sure that I would go to airpots, probably just back to regular. If I ran a dry coco setup and not a daily feed then I would probably see more benefits

super thread!! Id also like to thank head for all that he has contributed over the years, and due to this thread and hempy's thread, will be running coco/perlite hempy buckets. Question head or anyone here if you dont mind. Im only on page 58 out of 84, so might have been answered later on, and i know its been answered on a smaller scale, but here goes.

You think it would be alright to transplant from a 50/50 perlite/soil mix that are currently in 1 gallon buckets into coco 3g and then finish them off this way? or do you think it would stress them out too much and i should just finish in soil?

Thanks in advance!!

hey all '
very informative thread you got here going been reading it from start ...
i did learned that for best results you must get your ph under control under different stages of growth and that the plant get all it need, from a ph of 5.5/6 to 6.1/2 (from table below).
until now i had been using a ph of 5.8 all the way of flowering and started with 6.0-6.3 at the first few weeks of veg.?
11083phnutrcombo2.gif

so it there any better way of telling which ph is better to use for either veg seedling stage, or flowering, so it get all elements needed at every possible growth stage?
:thank you:
