GROW TENTS !!!!!!!!!

Hey all,

I have a Hydrohut deluxe with 2x 600watt digital ballasts. I like the Hydrohut, when i saw this thread i got worried i bought the wrong one at first. Hydrohut seems atleast as good as Homebox, with some differences, and probably a few similarities. Unfortunately, the HH looks to have some flaws, heh, ive already bought the velcro!(lol)

Since this will be my first run with the Hydrohut id like to ask some vets a couple questions. I really HATE the front and back air intake flaps. Why oh why! do they not have some kind way to keep out the light? I had to buy velcro at homedepot too(which is waaay too fukin expensive BTW). I am able to seal out most light coming to the room, but i thought this thing was light-tight?

My second problem with the system is the seams or stitching which could possibly rot in a humid environment, im not sure what material is being used there.

So basically, how well does the unit last over time? What did you do to make the tent actually light-tight?

I downloaded the video I GROW CHRONIC last night and it was the best video I’ve seen by far, it shows you how to set up a hydroponic grow room and it makes it seem so easy, will definitely have to try that setup. Download from link, there is many videos on this download so best thing to do is just download “I grow chronic” and uncheck the rest of them; you can download the rest another time if you like.

This video is a must for anyone who is even thinking of going hydroponic, so simple even a monkey could do it.
the one with the green guy?? if yes that is one good vid...

about TENTS

i looking for new growroom and i was think about one of these grow TENTS. i need really small spase - 0,5m2 with HPS 250W. I have a look at those TENTS and i can say they are very overpriced !! because this is only few PCV/metal pipes and some cover material..... they are really too expensive of what they are... even if cost is about 200$

so i thought i will make it myself.

so what do you think guys about make a frame with PCV pipes and cover it with black-white plastic ??? this will be many more economic solution. total cost is about 30$

whait for your answers...and any suggestions

peace

WeedTime, if your gonna make a DIY tent, i wouldnt use PVC for the frame as its not that strong, instead use wood. Then your tent will be as strong or stronger than these, depending on how well you design it.

The pre-built tents are expensive, but if you add up the cost of tools and the time it takes you to build one, then you see you havent saved much money anyway. Thats why i bought one. If i had built my own it would be perfectly the way i wanted though, i dont like somethings about the Hydrohut i got now. But its heavy-duty, and all-in-one, which was nice.

I finally got around to assembling my HomeBox XL today.

Let me just say that I was pretty disappointed, having owned a HydroHut Mini before.

The cover isn't as heavy. It feels a bit more rigid, if you will, and a bit more "plasticky" vs "rubbery"... not sure how to describe it. It just feels cheaper.

The seams weren't very strong. In fact a small 3-inch portion just ripped due to the way they stitched the seams without reinforcement (the top panel).

The 6" flanges aren't quite 6", it's a hair smaller which is annoying as fuck.

The zippers are plastic-toothed. It looked like metal zippers in the picture, but no it's very weak plastic zippers which don't zip closed very smoothly. I can just picture the zippers failing after a year or so of use. No wonder they have additional velcro... I guess they anticipated the zippers failing, so the velcro is a backup. The HydroHut had plastic zippers as well, but it had heavy-duty, large-toothed zippers which was just going to last.

The velcro of the removable floor wasn't even aligned well. Most of the velcro fit and lined up, but some pieces just don't line up causing one side to just sag down. Lame.

The ceiling wires weren't as tight-fitting as the HydroHut's, so it sags a lot more with the weight of a reflector.

The low-quality mesh over the intake vents weren't even trimmed, it's just roughly sewen on there with the edges in plain view (also kinda hard to explain)... just poor workmanship.

These are just a bunch of little differences, but it all adds up to a far inferior product. Next time, I'm going to do it right and get a HydroHut Original or HydroHut Mini. I say "next time" because I'm sure this thing is going to fall apart or otherwise malfunction after some use.

Maybe I can sell it right now for a small loss... hrmm...

Even if you're running a 75w CFL grow?

oh, I didn't you were running a 75w CFL. Why even buy a grow tent why using a light that small. Just build a mini grow cab.

Sorry, what I meant was that the HH Deluxe is a 52" x 104" size. It's not for everyone. It's not for 400w grows, it's not for 75w grows, it's not even for 1kw grows. If you're going with any hut, it should be HydroHut series and not the HomeBox. But getting the largest size possible no matter what you're running is ridiculous.

I'm running 600w BTW.

This thread has inspired me to revamp my old C22 cab. I went and bought a new 600watt digital ballast with air cooled reflector and a 40"x40"x80" tent that I found at a local hydro store. They don't have a brand name but it seems like it should do the trick. Here are some pics:

How well of a pull do you have with your exhaust config? Any problem with air movement? Is that 6" ducting? What fan and filter are you using? It looks great!

It sucks the walls of the tent in when its on so I guess its got a pretty good pull. I am just testing the temps for the first time tonight but after 6 hours it is still only 64 in there. I am using a 630CFM fan with 6" ducting and the filter is a DIY job.

thanks for answer redeye,

guys, do you really think that plastic pipes arent enough strong to hold lite hps reflector and maybe little carbon filter ?

cover the tent just with black-white plastic (not any special cover material) can cause any problems ?

grow tastic youve got nice setup there, your fan is really strong so shouldnt have any problems with temps.

how big can you go in the mini? is a 600w way too much and stick with a 400 watt?

if i could go with a 400w in the mini and not have to air cool the light i would definatly go for that, but if i have to go for a good air cooling light id want to dish out the little extra for the 600w. thoughts?

600w would be awesome in a Mini.

the only thing thats worrying me about a 600 in a mini is cooling it, from what ive been reading the 4'' ducts on the mini really choke it down, and i can find a 600w with a 4in air cooled.

hope this is making sense, going to be a first grow. also this will be going in a 1br apt so i always need to error on the side of security.

I think a 400 probably would be enough, but the yield potential from a 600w really is making me greedy, lol.

htg has a setup i think its a homebox tho, 500 bucks gets you the tent light setup and some small misc crap. Im thinking either htg or texashydro, after reading how how UNSTEALTH bgh ships i wont be using them.

Hey Big_Torch,

600 watts in a mini would be really nice. With a 400 watt you're at about 35 watts/square foot. Without doing any serious math, a 600 would equate to just over 50 watts a square foot. That difference would really be noticeable in bud density, not to mention give you wall-wall-wall-wall light coverage.
Cooling the 600 would certainly be more difficult with those 4" ducts.

When I first went about converting my 4"-6" exhaust hole, I tried heating up a 6" steel duct pipe on my stove element, but after 30 minutes of nearly burning through my oven mitt and not getting through my hydrohut, out came the scissors.
The outer canvas is thermally adhered to the inner poly-plastic, so the cutting is MUCH easier than you'd think. No rips, no mess, no fuss. It's less than ideal, but with a little tape around my 6" duct flange, it is air tight now.
Don't worry about the conversion. I assure you it'll be the easiest DIY project you'll ever do.

Now as for the shipping worries. Tell the seller to ship it discreetly. Have them wrap it in brown paper. Have them also ship it to a safe address that isn't linked to your grow. Take every step necessary to ensure your safety. It stinks that you don't always get the service you'd expect, but this is kind of a dodgy industry. Expect the worst unless you're running the show.
The tents are worth it though. My hydrohut mini was a great investment for my needs, and I hope it works for yours as well.

Good luck,
JC

thanks for the advice! i leaning towards a 600 because i dont want to get a couple grows under me and want more, lol.

the only problem right now is a safe shipping addy, i dont trust anyone that much. Im thinking i might just have it all shipped and wait a couple months before i do anything with plants. Another dilemma im having is with these digital ballasts that are suppose to be that much quieter/more efficient? are they really worth it or can i get away with just a normal ballasts.

adding up prices on the 600 stuff gets pricey when trying to get the good bulb, reflector exhaust, carbon etc!

HydroHut Mini with a 600w digital + Daystar would be almost too perfect. I regret getting this HomeBox piece of shit. I mean, I'm sure it'll be fine but for the same price the HydroHut is all around much better.

Anyways. You can cut a larger hole like jcsmooth; the duct flanges also have a reinforcement ring on the other side to "clamp down" the material with nuts and bolts, so you really don't have to worry about much.
