He was clearly gay, but I didn't even understand that at the time.

For once we agree. You can't program an 8 year old to be accepting, because they're born that way already. You can (and many do) teach non-acceptance of others for their cultural differences. That is learned behavior.

I had a couple classmates that came out in college. One wasn't much of a secret. She had always been a "tomboy" so it was no surprise. The other one was - son of the high school wrestling coach. That one came out of left field because he was an all star and dated many a cheerleader in high school.
