Economy seeds. the good, the bad and the ugly

G

ganjygav

Stoney,
I went to look at Ace seeds and did not see any seeds I would be in interested for under $10/USD each. Man that seems extremely high (no pun intended). But maybe that's just because I am old and grew up in So Cal in the mid 60's when a four finger bag was $10.00 I guess. Also it's pretty much true you get what you pay for. Problem is it's harder these days to really actually get what you pay for.

TY Ganjygav,
Thanks for the opinion.

It's more than an opinion. as everyone else states them being premature looking means nothing. Don't judge a bean by its shell !!

Hey Guys hows it going?? Things are booming I see.

Hey Jhhnn Mandala is all about keeping it natural and simple. His rational about dispensing the paper towel and sowing to medium makes a lot of sense and works flawlessly. Give it a try, I think you will be happy with the results.

Those skunk are kicking!!!:tiphat: See you were able to keep them out of the light. Cant wait to here how they smoke.

I cant believe you had some Korean skunk. My first time to Korea in the early 80's we used to burn that shit up. Never had the opportunity to grow it out. Little unnerving High as hell up around the DMZ. Did have some big old fat beans in it. I should have held on to those. Never crossed my mind back then. Woulda, shoulda, coulda, the story of my life.

Nomad28743 Welcome brother.

Thanks for the Props and joining in the discussion.

I get what your saying about the size and shape of the seeds. Some breeders don't let there seeds mature as well as other.
But ya cant always judge a book by its cover. Some strains just don't produce those watermelon stripes on there beans. Others can be tiny. Some sativas have the tiniest seeds you have ever seen. Honestly its been my experience that the tiny seeds produce some of the best plants. No scientific facts just personal experience. I have also had some of the most beautiful rattle snake eggs that wouldn't germ at all. You just can never tell.

Sovereign What ya know good?
I hear ya!!!:tiphat: Great score . You going to be rolling fat and happy in some fine herb shortly. Drop a link once ya got them going. I cant wait to see how these turn out for you.

Hey stoney917Thanks for swinging in.
There are definitely some high quality strains to be had on the cheap. I have to check out Nirvana's Papaya. I believe those are a remake of KC's Mango. It would be nice to compare the two as KC seems to have let there Mango slip just bit. Those could be a better option for those looking to run the mango.

ganjygav Hey brother you got it going on. Vision came through for you in all ways it seems.

See what I means about some taking longer to germ out. Throw them in the dirt and let nature take its course. Works every time. Let those other hang in the window for at least 3 weeks or a month before you give up on them. Just a quick spray down every other day or so and let them go. Ill bet you get 80% to 90% germination with no problems.

Keep us posted!!! I'm really excited to see how these turn out for you.

Betterhaff Welcome and thanks for sharing.
I would agree that once she is going and shows its first set of true leafs that its all environmental. Sometime its easier to germinate slightly immature seeds due to softer seed shell. Some of the big dark rattle snake eggs have such a tough outer coating that no amount of scarfing helps. Its just takes a longer time in the correct environment and they still come out as helmet heads.

As for me.

Well I still have the 3 Mango ladies going. Just short of 30 days in flower and finally slowing down on the stretch. Not much head room left to work with.

Ill throw up a few pics in the next fes days so yall can check them out. Once I throw up some pics I will give yall a good run down on them.

Yall have a great day.

Peace.

Bud porn!!

Bud porn!!

I was very pleased with Hazemans Elephant Stomper for like $50.00 12 seeds gave me 6 girls and 6 dudes. This is one of em early in flower. I wish I had taken finished pics, the frost coverage was unreal. I did use cuts from all of them for a lil seed making orgy though to preserve the line. A lil over 1000 seeds.

With the paper towel method, I usually get 100% germination in 48 hrs. If a straggler hasn't germed in 4 or 5 days, I dump it & start another seed to stay at the top of CO plant count limitations. I don't want that plant to be very far behind the others.

I know I'm more than a little bit unusual in striving to be 100% CO legal at all times, even w/ seed starts.

For this old hippie, it's pretty amazing that the people of CO had the grace & good sense to pass A64 at all. It's not terribly difficult to stay on the right side of that entirely- it just adds to the challenge in a small way. Doing that has kept us in constant supply w/ growing variety for the last 2.5 years. I really enjoy the fact that we can be totally at ease wrt both consumption & growing. I imagine worst case scenarios when thinking about safety & security. If, say, we had a break-in while nobody was home & a neighbor spotted it, called the cops, they'd have probable cause to enter. Fire is the same scenario. Should any of that happen, I won't have to post bail before I call the insurance co.

Once this batch is harvested, we'll have sufficient stash to cover for a long while. Even if 12 out of 12 seeds turn up male next round, I'll just dump 'em and start a new batch, smoke what we've got, be a little less generous w/ others. In the old days, I always hated running out when there was one of those inexplicable weed droughts, when nobody had any. That still holds, even when I can just walk a few blocks to score from a real business establishment. I like the price & quality of my own a lot better, even w/ low priced seeds.

Hows it going IC??? :tiphat:

Useful MY BROTHER.Great to see ya.

Those are freaking gorgeous. Makes me ashamed to put my pics up. Thanks for sprucing up the place.

For $50 ya cant beat that 12 for 12 perfect split and such beauties. I just don't see how you could go wrong.

1000 beans ya say.:canabis: Will be some happy folks over those!!!!! Hope I'm one of them. Hint, Hint!! LOL

Forever in awe of your work. I am properly humbled.

Hey Jhhnn Hows it going this morning??
I cant blame you at all. 100% legal is the way to go. If the draconian place I live ever goes legit. You can guarantee I will be 100% compliant.
God forbid any of those circumstances happen but it makes a lot of sense.

Im sure no commercial could ever match the love and care that you put into your own grows.

I can only dream of the day we can all share freely without having to look over our shoulder constantly. Just a bit envious.

Do they give you enough weight allowance to hold so you wont run out?

Keep it green and legal. :tiphat:

Perpetual Nooch Welcome!! thanks for stopping in!!
Nirvana definitely has some fine gear out there at very good prices. Can hardly go wrong with any of there selections.

Well as the say, "No rest for the wicked". I have a long day suffering through the heat. The wife has a long "honey do list" for me today.

ALL have a great day. Holler at yall later.

Peace

Everybody should have it as good as we do here in CO.

Amendment 64 allows that legal personal growers can keep whatever they grow. It's part of the State Constitution. There's no way to legally move your unlicensed personal stash somewhere else except in 1oz increments, however. 2oz if you do the MMJ thing.

Dialed in w/ 1000w system, yields of 3+lbs/yr of trimmed bud are entirely realistic growing from seed, more if a person really gets deep into it. That's 1oz/wk & we don't smoke nearly that much. I really haven't been that good a grower, either.

This harvest should provide an excellent buffer so I can try some longer flowering 12-14 week strains. I have Nirvana's Eldorado & will probably do it next.

GOOOOODDDD MORNING IC!!!!

Useful my brother.

You deserve as many props as we can give you brother.

Every time I cruz through your albums I have to wipe the drool off of my chin.

The wife didn't manage to give me heat stroke. Close but no cigar. I reckon she will have to continue to put up with me for a while longer.

Ola Jhhnn
hows it going this morning.

You guys in CO have got it going on. Cant wait until the rest of the country come on line.

We had a medi bill working in the state here but its still hung up in all of the red tape.

Here they are proposing some liberal plant allowances but they don't allow you to hold enough weight legally to keep you in meds if you have a bad harvest. Politicians are not smart enough to just work off of currant templates. They always want to recreate the wheel.

Your spot on, that a single 1000 watter can keep a couple rolling fat with high quality bud.

Well her are a few Mango shots. They still suck as I am the worst photographer on the face of the planet.

They are at day 28 12/12. Bud set its pretty much complete on most. The one on the right is about a week behind the other 2.

These have been some stretch boogers even the indica phenotypes.

Hear is one of the stretch indicas in the back. She is just a few inches from bumping the light. Should have already been snapped over but I just want to see just how far I can push the envelope on this one.

Has exceptionally tight internode spacing even with the big stretch.

picture.php

The other indica phenotype is just as stretchy but not so tight nodal spacing. I was able to get her into flower early enough so she should stay in the light without any problems.

Sativa phenotype from the mango. Very stretchy, nute sensitive, burns leaf tips above 1.2 EC. Very open plant structure makes for good light penetration.

Have this one broken down and spread out to take advantage of the light penetration. With any luck all the lower fluff bud should fill in nicely.

These have not been that much of a problem to run. There have been some early hermi issues. The Sat pheno did throw one early male flower This could have been MY fault with a bit over zealous nute schedule. . I picked it off before it could cause any issues and haven't found and more as of yet. Ill keep on watching her.

At this point Im not sure I could recommend these. Nice plants, easy going, no germination problems. Draw backs very stretchy, has hermi issues.

So we have about 6 more weeks to find out how they finish.

Hope this helps someone out.

Thanks for the props Heady.

Nothing compared to yours. One day Ill get to your level, I HOPE!!!

I would love to have a grow op like yours. To bad we don't have basements down here. Basements down here shortly turn into swimming pools.

If yall folks haven't check Usefuls and Head's threads, Cant recommend them enough. Some serious bud porn going down over there.

have a great day.

Looking good, M.R.GT!

If you like the mango enough to grow it again, You'll know it's a stretch monster so you can pinch the tops early on to make it get bushier instead. Thanks to you, the rest of us know it, too.

Hey Jhhnn How is going brother?

They are some stretchy girls. Just a bit more than I expected.

The first run I usually try and run them natural style to see what the growth characteristics are.

Definitely could have used a topping.

I really didn't expect the Indica phenotypes to stretch the full 30 days like the Sativa. Made a fool out of me.:bashhead:

Vision NL

Vision NL

Update on the northern lights from vision. I couldn't get 1 seed out of the 2nd pack to grow. I planted them straight into soil to germinate this time. Well my curiosity got the better of me and I had a poke around in the soil. 3 of them hadn't even split, and the other 2 had germed and had started to grow under the soil but never came up. 1 of them had coiled up like an ingrown hair and the other was just below the soil but had dried up and died even though the soil was moist. Probably my fault as I've never just planted non germed seeds straight into soil and I've maybe made a mistake I don't know. But then the 1st packet of these seeds I only got 2 to germinate using paper towels so take what you will from that. On a brighter note, the 2 NL I did get to start off are doing fine. Potted them up earlier and the mh will be going over them this afternoon. Here's a picture

Good thread M.R.GT. I went with budget seeds when I was starting out, and wish I still had some right now. :) Nirvana Northern Lights and White Rhino, from around 2003, both were excellent strains for me. I grew them in a hydro set-up as my first try with that and I think I nute fried them towards the end, but other than that, it was some of the best weed I had ever smoked up until that point. Earlier in the thread someone said Nirvana's White Rhino isn't as good now as the old stuff, so I don't know about that, but I was really happy with the White Rhino I grew.

The budget seeds I really loved were from Mandala, but I guess they are on a hiatus now or something. Mandala Speed Queen really surprised me, it was an awesome high, a decent yield, and a fast grower. Mandala Hashberry was a little lighter of a buzz than I expected, but a great grower and big yielder just the same. Mandala Sadhu was a beautiful plant with a creepy strong buzz.

I used to say that Hashberry was a great daytime buzz for tooling around town, Sadhu was a perfect after dinner desert, and Speed Queen was the before bedtime wind down wipe-out weed.

For me, with customs snagging everything they can find in the mail, its just not worth the risk of paying high dollar for some beans. I'm even hesitant about ordering the less expensive seeds from across the pond. I've ordered three times and got one order. I miss the clones of Washington and California desperately right now, but I miss those cheap seeds even more.

There's always somebody going on about how some strain isn't as good as it yewstabee. Who knows? I put it off to their headspace having changed rather than the seeds.

I think you've just been unlucky ordering beans. I doubt that 5% of orders get snagged, particularly small ones in plain padded mailers.

The ultimate answer is to grow your own seeds. That's not as easy as it sounds starting from F1 hybrids but there are still relatively true breeding lines available- the Pure, Bubblegum, Maple Leaf & several others. They may not have quite the punch of their F1 cousins but they'll breed true at least in the first generation.

I'm growing cantaloupe skunk atm, just to see if I like it. It's supposedly such a line. Up next is Eldorado. When I find something that really hits the spot for me, I'll grow it again, isolate a male or 2, pollinate some of the lower buds. If I started from F1's, the phenotypes in F2 would explode all over the map.

I'm not prepared to get into it deep enough to maintain mothers & grow clones nor to go beyond this sweet legal deal here in CO, either. I can legally buy clones, but I'm extremely wary about introducing any of the marijuana farm super bugs that can ride along w/ that. I figure I'd never get rid of 'em so I just stay away.
