Just half of younger Americans now hold a positive view of capitalism — and socialism's appeal in the U.S. continues to grow, driven by Black Americans and women, according to a new Axios/Momentive poll.

https://www.axios.com/americas-cont...aign=editorial&utm_content=politics-socialism

The pandemic has caused millions of Americans — including many younger Republicans — to re-evaluate their political and economic worldview. That's likely because of two factors: a renewed focus on deep societal inequalities and the tangible upsides of unprecedented levels of government intervention.

Socialism has positive connotations for 60% of Black Americans, 45% of American women and 33% of non-white Republicans. Those numbers have grown over the past two years from 53%, 41% and 27%, respectively.

Just 66% of Republicans and GOP-leaners ages 18-34 have a positive view of capitalism, down from 81% in January 2019, when we first polled on these questions.

56% of younger Republicans say the government should pursue policies that reduce the wealth gap, up from just 40% two years ago.

the labels are no use, no one ideology holds the answers, you have to mix and match, socialism is best for health care, education and utilities like electric and water. for the rest capitalism would be fine IF the government insured a level laying field instead of doing the opposite.

Hi Cannavore,

Do you mind giving a/some book recommendations? Books you’ve found that have helped inform your viewpoint?

Thanks

They wanted was best for me the first twenty years. Surrounded by WWII vets who were fine people, they explained life along the way. As in not just how to change the oil, but why- and how to rebuild the engine when someone failed to.
At that age, I did not understand to what an extent those WWII vets were a shield between myself and forces intent on radical change.

Thank you Gaiusmarius, you did send the ball soaring with that one...

this might shock you, but...i agree completely. politics, like religion in my opinion, should be a buffet instead of a list of what you may have. fuck the menu! "i don't WANT fries with that, bring me the cheese stix or go fuck yourself..." proclaiming that you believe in God and an afterlife DOES NOT lock you into being anti-abortion or hating gays etc. being liberal DOES NOT mean that you want everyones guns confiscated or a 99% tax rate on petroleum companies/billionaires.

the beginning of this video by Friendlyjordie a Aussie youtuber being harassed by a fucking corrupt (allegedly) deputy pm to the point where anti terror police arrested 1 of his producers for just talking with said deputy pm. anyway, he talks about the way these labels are totally useless nowadays. his examples are Aussi related, but still, it shows we should not be scared of labels, its the actual individual policies being represented that really matter. the labels are largely used to manipulate us in to not voting for our best interests.

This Is Why 'The Project' is Filth

the labels are of use if they aren't actually socialists and if you want an objective assessment of what's going on in this country. i don't use labels as a way to promote one ideology over the other, but to classify people/ideology more objectively (and in my opinion, correctly).

you have to mix and match, socialism is best for health care, education and utilities like electric and water. for the rest capitalism would be fine IF the government insured a level laying field instead of doing the opposite.
what you're describing here is what i said above -- social democracy. market capitalism but with a healthy welfare state and public utilities. to my understanding it's about as far left as you can go while still maintaining a capitalist economy.

i would argue that most people who think they're socialists in the US is because they supported Bernie (he had far and away the most youth support of anyone running) and are probably social democrats moreso than actual socialists.

im a dumbass american lol we don't read unless we're forced to read something 😂

but seriously yeah i don't read much leftist theory if that's what you were getting at.

being that we're on a weed forum and many of us spend lots of time in the garden, i do play lots of audiobooks, podcasts, and lectures to get the juices flowing.

i was also 10-15 years ago, someone who would have been called Alt-Right or possibly eventually even a fascist if i held the same views now that i had back then. i was very big into right libertarianism and the alex jones culture. not really sure how i escaped but i did lol and i feel as that gives me a unique perspective as well. for instance friends 10-15yrs ago who thought i was crazy are now more succeptible to the right's propaganda than i am lol.

gore vidal, george carlin, chris hedges, & noam chomsky are names that i can recall as being strong influences on me. bernie sanders of course for changing american political discourse and getting me back into politics. for years prior i had been apolitical.

Hi Cannavore,

Thanks for taking the time to reply; I appreciate the thorough and considered response.

Audiobooks, podcasts and lectures are great, practical ways to access new information. I particularly value the long interviews you get with podcasts where the full opinion with explanation & clarification is available, in contrast to the TV style, ‘soundbite & talking point’ only type.

Thanks again

Ha ha. No no, I just like to learn of, appreciate and try and understand different perspectives. Always looking to find something that challenges or changes my own perspective. I annoy people through PMs with unsolicited recommendation requests as well. And sometimes the odd recommendation, though I’m trying to remember not to do that…

Thanks again.

Look back to our history of labor conflict. A pejorative used to target those who pushed for any change at all.
Curse the commies who fought for an 8 hour day, a 40 hour week, got rid of child labor, gave women the vote etc.
One of the largest strikes ever was when labor was told to deliver 9 hours of work for 8 hours of pay.
The boss owned the newspapers and the radio back then. Now they have the TV internet.
The biggest news: unions are evil.
Police unions being the sole exception.

Do we have to also pretend that those currently "pushing for change" are not controlled by the 1%? 🤣🤣🤣

so controlled by the 1% that literally nothing they want to do gets passed because the actual elites/1% of the democratic party are right wingers and not leftists. all actual left wing policy gets flat out stopped, or watered down by democrats.

Once again, rabid commies have fucked it up for everyone.

A bit of Eurocentric African insight to the situation in RSA today.

Looting of shopping centres continues, with SA Police Services and the few troops deployed, being totally overwhelmed. The protests have now spread to two other provinces, outside of KwaZulu Natal (Durban) and Gauteng (Johannesburg). These being Mpumalanga and Northern Cape.

Numerous police members have been caught in civvies, looting with the dumvux.

SAPREF refinery has called Force Majeure and closed, removing 35% of RSA's fuel from the market.

The rail system is imploding.

Wheat imports have been severely disrupted at Durban port and what the grain merchants/millers have or have produced in Durban, is not getting through to Johannesburg. Starvation is days away for many.

Mrs. P reports that the bread area at our local supermarket had 10% of the normal amount of bread and it was being grabbed fast.

So far, no incidents of looting in our province of the Western Cape which is governed by the Democratic Alliance, not the ANC, but there was an effort in Khayelitsha yesterday to overrun and loot a mall. The SAPS and Metro Law Enforcement managed to prevent that from happening. Well done to them.

Friend in Durban is locked up in her home, with her husband away in Somalia on contract. She's running out of food and the queue at the only local supermarket with stock is about 4 hours. Rationing has been instituted. A middle class white and Indian community.

The looters who are prepared to talk to the media, say that it's not about Jacob Zuma being incarcerated, it's about them being desperately poor, hungry and cold, whilst their so called "leaders" in the ANC happily loot the country of every cent they can get. So, they've been told (apparently by a well orchestrated communications system linked to 12 prominent anti-Ramaphosa figures) that by looting the supermarkets and malls, they are getting their chance to participate in the theft and at the same time, fuck over the "white man" so that they can experience hunger and discomfort as well.

Hundreds of thousands of jobs no longer exist due to the malls, shops, farms, factories etc having been burnt or destroyed.

Starvation looms.

This will make the Holomodor lists.

Heard today from an independent local patriot source that this has all been planned by Klaus Schwabb, Gates and the usual criminals, in order to get their hands on our mineral resources, land and what little water we have. CIA involvement in farm murders was also mentioned.......???

Communities are coming together and fighting back. Some really not-so-nice things happening to looters. Residents of Pimville, Soweto telling the looters that they will punish them if they think of coming near their shopping mall.

I was given a hot tip on making cocktails today. Apparently 3 or 4 spoons of sugar gives it that "fiery" kick. Sheesh, I was looking forward to growing a business, not becoming an urban resistance member.

Please would you draw attention to the terrible disaster that is unfolding in our beautiful country. Once again, rabid commies have fucked it up for everyone.

The Chekist with English Spanish Italian Polish Portuguese subtitles is a 1992 Russian drama film directed by Aleksandr Rogozhkin. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. The film is currently not in distribution.

Srubov is a part of CHEKA, the secret police Lenin established after the Bolshevik Revolution. They arrest, interview for a minute, try in ten seconds, and execute intellectuals, aristocrats, Jews, clergy, and their families. In the building basement, five people at a time are shot as they stand naked facing wooden doors. No one to remember their last words; no martyrs, just anonymous bodies. Daily, the kangaroo court, the executions, the loading of bodies onto wagons. Srubov is cold, distant, sexually dysfunctional, and a deep thinker, hated by former friends and his family. As he tries to reason the nature of revolution and the purpose of CHEKA, he slowly goes mad.
