Love the garlic, too. I think we established that a few years ago earlier in this thread. We used our last of 225 heads of last year's harvest garlic over the last few days. Next harvest is last week of may or first week in June. This year they look bigger and healthier than ever. We gifted about ten heads and ate the rest....along with our massive arugula bed and cilantro forest.

Ours are from last year's harvest. I saved the best to make up this year's crop. Looking bountiful. Walking through it brings about that wonderful waft. I originally bought the bulbs from a friends cousin's farm in Colorado. Mail ordered.

We're down to the end of last year's bulbs as well. We give a fair amount away...plus the wife sells her pastes. I turn my neighbors onto them every year....promoting home gardening as I do. My thing. It's weird because...for some reason..none of my local gardeners grow garlic. It's an awesome winter crop....something to watch grow during those short day months.

Planning on a 3rd-4th week of June harvest.

Watching the radar..

Watching the radar..

waiting for a break from the rain...a divot in the window...a gap in the blinds. Planning on running pavement up a steep winding hill. It includes part of the SD 100M course...the only paved section of the race...the piece being only 2.25 miles of the race...is a hard climb. Climbing pavement or trail is difficult. I'm looking at running about 10 miles today.

I woke up early...like 4:00 A.M. to an anxiety dream in which I was on the new part of the course (I've run this piece many many many times)....in the darkness...hurting badly..unsure of where to go...Failing. Let the mind games commence...fucking way too soon..way too soon...this stuff wears me down. Have to get a grip on perceptions. I'll come around. Been here before.

The dream came from having received the race update letter yesterday...going to sleep a little hungry...pondering the new course..needing a couple pairs of new shoes...having not run...

basically...that's a sign of Little Bitch Syndrome (LBS)....when the mind is fleeing the notion of pain..and makes one question desire, ability, and conditioning. Looking for an out.

Part of the game. Not a nice part. Like I said...it wears on me. Endurance comes in many forms as do Walls. Can't let it bother me or affect my confidence. I have to face it down...nip it in the bud...so to speak.

* I feel it's important to document this. It helps me see things for what they are...and helps me see the patterns...the trends. It's interesting (for me) to watch the transitions as they occur....study my strengths and my weaknesses.

Something I've been doing lately

Something I've been doing lately

When I have smaller statured plants...plants in which I'm able to move out of the flower studio...I've been doing part of their flushing in a different room. You see this room in many of my pictures...today's for instance....but in this room I leave the plants for days under natural light fluorescents, darkness, or just whatever light they get from the windows. Temps are different in there as well...colder.

^ This is a good example. I-HOP Satellite expression #1 at 50 days...partially pollinated to make the f2 generation. She's having her medium drenched more than twice her pot size and being flushed every day this way. I'll leave her out there for a few more days...but realistically she could go tomorrow if I wanted. Let her burn herself out...but I'm sure the coco has not much salt in it.

Not a yielder...but christ she smells amazing....funk and fruit. I'm not even sure which parent dominated this expression. I cloned her.

^ This entire branch is full of f2 seeds

I-HOP Satellite = SCreme 'N Dawg f2 (aka Strawberry Dog) X Blue Satellite 2.2

My sins:

* I don't like soil indoors at all. Soil is for the outdoors imo. It's a pain in the ass indoors...mixing soils..wearing a regulator because of dust....dirty and heavy. I did it for years. I like bottled nutrients and coco indoors. I have not found an organic nutrient regimen in coco that I like better than regular (I guess chemical salt) General Hydroponics...bloom and micro with epsom salts in RO water.

Yeah I know...kind of pains me..as I'm into my organics outdoors..but hear me out

I've tried people's herbs that have been grown in coco (because I'm not giving up coco..love it in all ways) with "organic" nutrients and I swear it messes up the flavors for me. They all have that same undertone...with A and B coco nutes (or whatever it's called) being the most obvious. I can smoke something grown with A/B and tell right away.

But with General Hydroponics...and flushing with a cleansing additive..I feel I get the "real" flavor traits of the plant. It burns clean...and the flavor is what it is. Great tasting plants taste great...lesser flavored plants taste....well...less good.

Feel free to give me shit...I may be the only grower you know who feels this way about GH. I've mostly heard other people (on here...not in the real world) say they can taste GH in herb...but I'm calling bullshit. Not my experience.

Another thing I'll not agree with..

Waiting for trichs to go amber. I don't agree with it...at least in most every thing I've ever grown. Amber to me...even 50% amber...is too long. Things are breaking down and decaying by then. Clear or partly cloudy is where I've found the best flavors. I can't tell the difference in the effects of early or later windowed plant harvests either.

Queen Mox....and I've shown this...harvested on day 58 or day 70...doesn't make a difference...in any regard...flavor, high, aroma, or yield...at least that I can tell. All my expressions are like that....except the Plenty plant...probably because she has Haze in her...and even with her...it's just a yield thing. She gets heavier if I let her go 70+ days but aside from that...60 day Plenty is the same as 78 day Plenty. The extra yield doesn't compensate for the costs of operation. It's a small difference in yield.

I say all this shit because I'm trying to prove myself wrong...but every time I look at it...I don't see a real reason to stop using a non organic nutrient regimen in the non organic indoor environment...on such a small scale garden.

Can anybody else give me a reason? Has anyone ever researched how GH nutrients are made? I mean...they have a proven formula that works great and is simple to work with. I modified mine of course...The old H3ad/Rez 2 part formula works well...still very consistent. I mean things like that shouldn't change.

and actually...H3ad who I've always believed knew his shit about growing and breeding...agriculture in general...had an outstanding thread on salts...chemical derived and organically derived. He made some very valid arguments about using non organic derived salts indoors.

I will never preach a "right way" to grow pot.
Most of us who've been growing long-term have tried various methods. They're all valid. It's all about what's right for you.
Organics have just been a natural progression for me, personally.
We have a mutual friend here who mostly grows hydro. His is some of the best weed you'll ever smoke. Has it down to a science...but I'm not really interested in science.
I once toured the government greenhouses in the Netherlands in the late 80's with the notion of growing tomatoes commercially via hydroponics. What killed it for me was the leachete - the unused salts, all dumped into a big pit. They had no answers for that.
On a commercial level, I couldn't hang with that.
I love coco. I'll never yield better, but even when I was growing organically, I was still part of the 'bottle paradigm'. Buying product.
I'm working on relying on that less and less. I enjoy building my soil, brewing teas w/ my own EWC. That's my own trip - it feels right.
I'm being true to me - you're being true to you. That's all that matters.
Carry on, brother! :)

Ok...today is the first day of looking at maps and developing my race strategy.

* some things came up and I did not get to run but once in the last week. No big deal...as the weather was shit and I raced last week end..so time off is probably for the best...at least for the body..but not the mind. Gives the mind time to dwell. Rest is necessary....yes..important

but the dwelling has been minimal/non existent the last couple days...no anxiety dreams...no doubting..

logistically all I need is a couple new pairs of shoes. I ordered those yesterday. I'm able to get my Altra Lone Peak 2.5 shoes for 1/2 price now. Figure I use up a pair a month...retail they go for $120....2 for 1 is a great deal. Shooting for FREE next. Shoes and race entry fees are my biggest expenses concerning training/racing. Travel costs would be next....but I could see where that could actually be 1st.

what's cool is how much the companies kick down product in this sport. You don't have to be an elite to receive kick downs. All you have to do...I've found..is be out there all the time competing. It helps also...to have a "look"/attitude and respect. If you have a blog...even better.

** I'll train every day for the next week. Average 10 miles a day..put in a solid 70+ mile week. Since I'm volunteering at the PCT 50M next weekend...an out and back....sweeping the course..I'll get in 20some miles of slow dragging right there. The rest of my runs will be at my pace...with speed work and hill repeats...off trail crashing....adding fun in sand boxes..push ups...mountain climbers..dips..pull ups...stretching and rolling

long week

Agree 100%.

I just need to question myself...see if I'm really progressing or if I'm just lazy and making attempts to justify being so.

Yeah....those salts have to go somewhere. Run off...Salton Sea. Nasty stuff. Can't argue that one.

Salts intrigue me...inorganic or organic. When you think about it...salts are life. So...do inorganic salts support artificial life in an artificial environment (indoors)....or are those lifeforms still organic? They are fed artificially, lighted...light cycled artificially....

Guess that's why I divide my organic outdoor from my inorganic indoor. I have this perception of the indoors being like a space ship.

* as time goes by...humans are becoming less organic. Synthetic drugs...synthetic foods...electronic implants (pace makers and such...plus now..for robotics..and you know the computer chips are coming).....synthetics in all aspects of our lives. people are going with it....perpetually progressive? evo or devo?

Dragged this bitch out...

Dragged this bitch out...

^ Easy Mox Trilogy expression #5. With much effort I was able to remove this flimsy bush out of the flower studio and into the adjacent room to have the life flushed out of her for the next set of days. She's at day 54...and has been flushing since day 50 in the flower studio. You might be able to see the I-HOP Satellite expression #1 in the background...and get an idea of how much bigger EMT #5 is in comparison.

Easy Mox Trilogy (in this example) = Mox Mox X Casey Jones f2....this would be the same Casey Jones f2 males used to make Skunk Jones.

* she was already heavy in the pot...so I just flushed 2 gals of treated water (RO water with a flushing agent added)...this session...through her 1.7 gal square. Every day I'll push water through her like that..more than is required. I like to hear the pots flow water out the bottom.

^ To me she looks like a Trainwreck expression of Casey Jones...and as I've documented many times before...she is exceptionably funky/twangy in her aromas....and successful at transitioning those aromas over to flavor. She tastes just like she smells. Amazing. Has almost a narcotic type head...stoney

A "creeper" style of growing...not unlike the E-32 cut of Trainwreck..she is a mess to deal with during all phases of veg and flower...and she is sensitive all through flower...especially kicking out nanners..during late flower/flush. She can seed herself down low if she is not monitored and kept tweezed. I have plenty of s1 beans from pervious runs....so pollen is viable.

She's my Thai girl...that's how I think of her.

You dudes would enjoy her smoke. She has a fan base amongst some of my friends...and I really enjoy her hash...but she's best smoked in doses imo....not something I want to smoke every day....but then

I don't smoke anything all the time. I mix it up...smoking samples from everything I grow. There is no ultimate.

Got 9.84 miles of speed work in this afternoon. First time I opened my legs up since my 7 mile charge at the end of the race last weekend. Had a solid run...pushing up and down several hills...bouncing the technical sections..

time was fast.

I feel like I was stretching out the rips in my muscles. That's good..that's what needs to happen. You can't let the rips heal up tight...much better to keep stretching them as they rebound.

Feeling it though. I'm not 100%. Getting there. My confidence is all there. I felt like pushing it.

^ Removed for further flushing..ahhh dousing as it were. Jaundice f2 expression #3. She's probably the sweetest smelling out of the 3 sisters I have...and maybe...the best yielding. Follows the "red' side of Jaundice.

So...at day 54 she is now under different environmental conditions..and being overly flooded.

* #3 was partially pollinated to make the f3 generation..as well as...having a branch dedicated to I-HOP Satellite pollen. All her lower branches are with seed.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

my right ankle...the one that has been sprained for the last couple/few months has been bothering me for the last couple days. Hurts...but I'm running on it.

Tomorrow I'm volunteering trail maintenance time. Part of the 100 course has several blowdowns crossing the trail along a 4 mile piece. A few oaks and a big Jeffery. Going to hike in tomorrow morning...early..and cut them out of the way.

Guess they want to use a 6' "misery whip" for some reason. Probably some regulation concerning the volunteer crew's certifications..but anyway...using a cross cut saw instead of chainsaws...should make for a long day of working harder not smarter.

* Been going over the course map of the race. Yup...it's a lot different...and yup...it looks like a bitch of a course. They have has going up Noble Canyon during the heat of the day....and the new out and back section of the course (15+ miles combined) is a long drop down into Cibbets Flat...with the climb back out coming at the 60some mile mark..which for me..will begin the night time portion of the race.

The majority of the night time section is all running north from Cibbets Flats on the PCT to the Sunrise crossing...followed by the push to Cuyamaca Lake...and the finish line.

This course is set up for late charges. Once you are on the return...on the PCT heading north....it's miles and miles on mostly runnable terrain. This course is much more a runner's course than last year's course. It'll be a Heavenly ride if my legs are there or I'll be Hell bound if they are not. That's a long piece either way...and it'll come when I'm starting to look at my watch and the eastern horizon. If the sun's rise catches me on the PCT...I'll know my attempt at a sub 24hr finish is dust

** The course was altered by the RD mostly because the race is held on both Federal and State lands. The State of California...more or less...doubled the permit fees...whereas the Feds...are open arms..and much cheaper. So basically....the Republic of Cali....is playing games. You have no idea how much volunteer trail work we do for them..and still they jack us.

The less trails we needed permits for...the cheaper the costs. That's why much of he race was moved onto the Fed side.

So...we don't race up Stonewall peak or Middle peak this year. No biggie...I just raced over middle peak....and can live without going over Stonewall.

The hill in and out of Cibbets is a bear. I'll be sweeping over that section Saturday....pulling flagging from the PCT 50M race course. It's not steep...but it's a grinder...doesn't let up.

Doing hill work today. Annoyed by my ankle....but other than that...all is well. I have no time to be sidelined by a sore ankle....that's not happening.

Have you wrapped the ankle @ all?
That blows.

We talking a two-man cross-cut saw?
After all the rock-hauling maybe it won't seem like such an arduous task, but just kind of silly not using a chainsaw.
Is that because of fuel spills or the possibility of fire?
The things you're having to put up with now that you're socializing your sport, I tells ya! :bigeye:

No...not taping the ankle. Did hill repeats yesterday...over 9 miles of going up...going down...turn around..go back up...go back down...did that on a couple different paved hills...and ran technical hilly trails in-between. I modified my stride to compensate for my sore ankle..but

it's been like this for months. I'm left legged so push harder off the left...and when going down steep hills...that puts a lot onto the right leg to land the hard pushes off rocks..onto rocks. I look at nagging injuries like this one as just something I have to go through to get stronger. It's always something or another...had about 4 months where part of my right leg went numb..have knots going up and down my legs on any given day...lower back aches daily...feet are beat up...sprains pulls rips bruises

When I tweak ankles...it's always on downhills.

Didn't bother me yesterday..

Today though...I was wearing boots and hiking in tools. We did several...I think 4...oak blow downs. The furthest one out was 2.5 miles..so hiking in/out and sawing trees with a two man 6' cross cut...and a one man 4' cross cut...along with pounding wedges and rolling the logs...

that all put more strain on my ankle than yesterday's work out. I really don't like wearing boots any longer...they were messing with my ankle all day.

Quick work of it though. We started at 7 and were done by 1. The volunteer trail crew isn't signed off to use chainsaws on federal lands...but are signed off on state lands. That's why we had to use the cross cuts...even though I told the crew boss..that I could get a permit for wood cutting and just come in there with a chainsaw and make haste. Always a loop hole....but I can fully understand why the Forest Service doesn't want volunteers running around its trail systems with chainsaws.

Funny thing is the cross cut saws belong to the state...so we were doing fed trail with state tools.

* Until you learn how to saw with a cross cut...it's the land of fuck. Once you know how to make one sing...it's a lot less hard....but still...sawing petrified Black Oak is hard work. We also had a Jeffery Pine (about 42" diameter where we had to saw it) that we tried to cut...but it was way too punky to get wedges to hold..and was..more or less...sawing on heavy rotten log. Ended up leaving that one after 15 minutes of sawing away. Forest Service will eventually get it.

.....yeah volunteering again Saturday at the PCT 50M....the shit I have to do to be a respectable runner...and do the full circle giving back thing. Shit...running sweep (running/hiking behind the very last racers) and pulling flagging is real butt work. You don't get to see much action...and by the time the last people finish...a lot of racers and spectators have left. I miss the party at the finish line. On the bright side...I'm a really good motivator...know how to get people to give max effort....so whoever that last person is (they are officially called DFL = Dead Fucking Last...actually held up in the ultra community as honorable...held up in esteem) will be privy to my abilities in motivation. They will have an experience. I enjoy turning people around and making them go...it can be real ugly...but there is beauty in the ugliness.

Met a smoking hot PCT thru hiker. Young girl just graduated from the University of Nebraska....graduated one day...came out and started hiking a few days later. Trail Flowers are always the most beautiful. Dirty girls....letting go...getting into nature. Makes me happy to see them. I've met many...and never an uncool one.

Gathering as many heat days as I can

Gathering as many heat days as I can

I'll be racing the SD 100M at this time...in 2 wks.

Race starts on Friday this year to cut down on trail marking vandalism, the amount of hikers, mountain bikers, horses we come across will be reduced, and it gives crews and aid station workers more parking in certain places. It's a big event. If there are 300 racers...there are at least that many crew people, spectators, and race workers..probably way more. The whole event lasts 3 days. There is a Thursday evening meeting/greeting (not mandatory) and 2 days (1 night) of racing...partying

Traditionally this is a hot race. Temps can be in the 90's during the day and 30's at night. Heat will be major factor if it gets over 85. I'm getting myself acclimated to the heat...but we haven't had really hot days. It was in the 80's today while I was out...and I'll be out all afternoon tomorrow...temps should be in the 70's. Best I can do...for now.

^ Breaking in another pair of Altra Lone Peak 2.5s.....these came for me a couple days ago....two pair should last me through June. I don't really need to break them in much....I'm good with them right out of the box...no issues running 100 miles first thing. I have pairs of these shoes fucking under every couch..chair..on the back deck...in the front yard..

* foxtails are coming back out...you can see them sticking in my socks..annoying things

Blows me away how many old pairs of shoes I have around. All of them have seen the wars.

******the deep end

This race is creeping up on me like a specter...I'm all over the place with my training...I have way more people following me these days...the race is in my home range of mountains...on trails that I train on....possibly in weather that melts runners (60% of the field dropped a few years ago..temps in the upper 90's)..........just fucking shit that I need to forget

this snake of a race course....time time time time...where will I be? where do I need to be? can I go? am I a beast or a pussy? Are you going to take that shit? are you going to let this fucker beat you down?

Fuck you...you can't bring me down. I bring me down. Nobody else gets to.

you want to hear voices? Let me tell you about voices.

Time Time Time...we're...tougher than shit...a pit bull that gets its hold and grinds down the course...with all heart...at all expenses. play the game true...play it all the way...don't disrespect it by not going deep..there is nothing else. no other way.

EDIT: It's a bit later...took some more nips off the blotter..stretched and listened to music.....watered my gardens

i saw a couple of guys out trail running the other day while i was out riding, turns out the route i sometimes use to access one of the trail networks is also used by some of the runners because it allows you to get on dirt and cross a goodly bit of terrain without resorting to roads for the most part, aside from dirt roads that is...indeed one of the longer trails that goes along the base of the mountains was mainly built by runners, which explains why the transitions in and out of arroyos suck on a bike since they make tight switchbacks right at the bottom so its impossible to carry any momentum...anyway,got me thinking about trail construction and the inherent difference between a good hiking/running trail and a mountain bike trail...hiking trails generally suck on a bike...

My wife met a New Mexico runner down at the pub...yesterday. He's out here for the PCT 50M....a fast dude. Little fucker like me.

I wish I could turn you on to some of the trails out here. The mountain bikers are making some gnarly downhill runs in some of the less popular canyons. Personally...I like what they do...making berms and jumps..rerouting the slower lines into faster ones. I get along with all of those peeps. Pro active kick ass riders...type A personalities...ride hard...party hard

* I'm fueling up now. I have to be at the start/finish line at noon...then shuttle up to an aid station on Laguna Mountain..and start sweeping the last 20some miles of the course. I'll be out there all day....nursing along the wounded and the slow. It'll be interesting....watching people suffer.

They've been running since 6 this morning

No...I understand not wanting to do what they are doing. I don't want to either....actually it amazes me they don't get killed. I see the same dudes all the time now. Most are locals. Climbing is climbing...believe me, dude...I know what you are doing.

You're higher up...our mountain ranges top out at 6500' or so. Tree line starts bit over 4000'. Drainages though...are filled with Oaks.

I didn't realize until I was at an aid station today...getting ready to start sweeping...that my race is in 3wks not 2wks....what the fuck..I can't keep track of time anymore....or I've concluded that it doesn't really matter if it's in 2wks or 3wks...I already know what's going on...what I have to do. I'm resigned..no matter whatever else I may say. I'm ready....I'll do what I do. It's just running.

The sweeping went well....helped out a few people. Watched a girl I know..totally fall apart at the 28 mile aid station. Overtraining and racing (she raced the Lost Boys just a few weeks before)...putting in 100 mile weeks. She's training for the Western States 100M (like the oldest..most famous Ultra in the states)......anyways...it was painful to watch her melt down physically and mentally. Ball of tears and a DNF.

When my shit goes south....I listen to the Tonight album and I realize that there is great soul in this world. I fucking weep...it's that good. Neil Young is a great man.

I've been wanting to let loose....going for it....I'm going to push my abilities. I'll let the words of that Canadian man lead me in. I knew you'd be on it HL.

I so get it, likewise when I listen to Cortez the Killer. He won't be with us forever.

From Neil Young & Crazy Horse, summer 2001 European Tour. June 21, 2001, Sportpaleis Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands
