Congratulations on a strong finish and making your goal time, sound pretty brutal. Going about five miles an hour in those conditions sounds like a lot of work. About how many people enter that race and how many finish? Not that many I would imagine.

This is a small race. Think 60some were registered and only 50some raced. It's an old race...been around since the early 90's..but it isn't put on every year. Being 50 miles point to point..from desert to timber..is a logistical nightmare. Having to shuttle people down into the desert..etc...plus just having to mark the course. It's two different worlds...the top and the bottom. The bottom is way down there...the top..way up there.

It was really well marked but some people got lost and got caught out there for a while. Think there were only 6 drops. Mostly experienced people racing this one...but still some got lost. That can be scary when the field is spread way out...all over the place....someone goes down (like last year...hypothermia)...it may not be easy to find them..especially if they are off course.

* The guy who was near death and taken to the hospital last year...the hypothermia case...came back this year for revenge. Great runner..he creamed the course this year. That was fun to see.

** I'm really sore...entire body..bone deep sore...can't sleep for shit..but hydrating and eating. My right ankle...the one that's been sprained for months..is making me hobble. I tweaked it pretty good on some rocks during my charge. But..man...it was an awesome charge...well worth the soreness.

*** My next race is June 3/4 San Diego 100M...big one...300 people fill out the field. Rock concert...that's what it's like..racers from all over come to that one. Aid stations are big...lights...strobes...playing tunes. When you are running all day and night...the night time becomes surreal...and then you come up on an aid station..and it's like a different world. I think some aid station captains design their themes around this effect. Mind stuff

I'm still living the dreams from yesterday. Takes me 2 or 3 days to come back all the way. Sounds crazy but it's true..I've talked to other ultra runners about it. We all say pretty much the same things....relating to the experiences. That's all we talk about...for the most part...shit we go through.

man, thats pretty hardcore...a race that near kills people...i like it!

so far from the ultra endurance bike races ive seen its only reduced people to roadside tears...

so whats next? ultra lightweight speed hikes of the pct? are there longer races in the states? 100 miles on foot just seems insane to me,im sure i could ride that far in a day,it may take me 10-12 hours, but i could do it...

Multiple day runs...that's the progression. As beat up as I am after running this 50...I think about Scott Jurek setting the Appalachian Trail speed record. Believe it took him 46 days....averaging perhaps..50 miles a day. Getting my head around that....difficult to grasp the dedication and honed abilities that go into those numbers.

I've gotten 2 people..now...into ultra racing. One of them was in the race yesterday. I tell them..."let go...step off the ledge...it's possible..just go for it" And they have..and they are doing....now of course..these are people who I know are capable physically and know who would get it mentally....but I've seen all kinds of people's different foundations. It takes all kinds...like anything else...I suppose.

I did a 100 mile stretch of the AT about 9 years ago... and fk me. We banged it out in 6 days after training for it for about 8 months. Beautiful, rugged country. I don't think I could swing the ultra racing... lol

Last Recovery Day

Last Recovery Day

My sprained ankle is not bothering me much today...but the over all body soreness has lent to broken sleep. I was up 1/2 the night last night and had to shut down and take an afternoon nap today. I'm eating and drinking...using the Proven Nutrition products...essentially plowing down calories. I'll put back on the 4-6 pounds I lost in the race..during the week.

I must look kind of out of it..some lady followed me into the Post Office and asked me if I was feeling down. I was a bit short with her...as I could see the "come to Jesus" spiel in her eyes and hear it in her tone..anyways...

never mind. no need to break down some portly christian woman...but it reminded me of something my wife showed me on FB:

"if you want to talk to god...race ultras" that was the crux of it.

^ My favorite expression is back in court..back in favor...back in season. You may remember that during the winter I was bitching about the Queen Mox Clone not growing well in the colder studio temps..and how I decided that I would stop flowering her in the winter months. I even cut down several clones that were ready to be flowered...

Here...she's been flowered...2 clones in a 5 gal container. Harvest day 59.

* After having found and kept this clone for...I think..3 years now..my best assessment of her (in all objectivity):

This is the best skunky Flo expression I'll ever find. The first aroma the nose gets is skunk...then followed by the floral perfume.

Mox Mox = Chem DD X TFlux

TFlux = Original Flo X Chem DD

She is a fine blend of the parents...and for me...satisfaction. Hash machine

My own brands of high grade Cannabis...my friend. I swear by it.

I used to think it was crazy...and it is...but you get used to the craziness. I even look forward to the recovery days. My wife caters to me...and I can eat whatever I want and not think I'm destroying my world.

I have a month to the next one...but I'm volunteering at the Pacific Crest Trail 50M in a couple weeks...believe the race director has me sweeping...which means I'll follow the last runners and pull flagging. That will be a long slow day. Got to give back to the community.

Feeling way better today

Feeling way better today

The deep pain is gone. I have a few knots and pulls...but I can lift my knees up high and I'm capable of running. Being able to recover quickly is of most importance.

^ Another wall of Queen Moxie (on the left...2 clones in a 5 gal) and Plenty (aka Plentyland, aka Easy Mox Trilogy expression #7) filling out. Both these girls are easily over 6' tall...even bent and tied they are over 6' tall. You can't even see the Can 100 filter that's hanging behind them...that's how thick they are.

* Just changed out bulbs a couple days ago. My other ones were like 1.5 yrs old...lol....very dim. Now I can see again. I'm terrible about changing bulbs...really bad.

^ Here's a look at a Skunk Jones around 30 days into flower. I didn't clone this expression....nor am I breeding with her. She's squat...maybe 3' tall at most...and elevated on a bucket. Beside her is an SZSK f2...which at this stage...looks similar...but is only about 2.5' tall.

What's important here?

The SZSK f2 smells like your typical Skunk #1. You dudes know that aroma? It's very distinct...fruity. Not desirable in this project.

The Skunk Jones...she smells different...though I can detect that same Skunk #1 aroma at her foundation.

* I believe that I'm going to find more success in the Skunk Jones. Looking at the girls that are flowering...a week or more behind these...the ones that impress me most are the Skunk Jones. I can see the Casey Jones in them already....some are really stretching out..becoming beasts.

Gots to trim that Moxie I showed yesterday. In fact..I haven't even chopped her down yet. She's been sitting out in another room...in dimness and darkness.

She's a bitch to trim...and I didn't have the focus yesterday...to even begin the process.

Throw up some nug shots later on

i just transplanted some casey jones x f13 seedlings today, some nice looking plants in the mix,i needed to get some new genetics going to spice things up,pay the bills farming gets to be mighty frickin boring...and getting the new any road bike set up will be cool, sorta break up the routine of trail rides, and be able to extend the range of my rides...anything to keep the psych going, and find new and masochistic ways to explore the pain cave...

Awesome, Unc. Your Blue Satellite stuff was what motivated me to run/breed this round of I-HOP Satellite...and man..those are going to be good. I just started flushing one this morning...looking forward to smoking her. Spice things up...for sures

^ Moxie. Slowly trimming her up. Got caught up in some other shit I had to do..but now I'm getting some trimming done.

I love this plant..such a funky girl. The longer I keep her...the more she becomes Flo. Sticky fuzziness of resin. The entire house stinks. She ain't a yielder...but she's the best of the best stinkers. Her high is tops...flavor..aroma..makes me feel like a genius.

yes, more of a blue line lavender color though...the bubble hash water looks like red wine or grape kool aid...

yeah, less than 200 for that set up,its kinda more artisinal than science-y,but it seems to work ok...its potent and tasty,my yield still sucks though, still dialing it in,but at least im getting good product now...

Stretch Run

Stretch Run

Felt like I needed to try out...see where the legs were. Didn't go far...only a bit over 4 miles..and I definitely am not 100% recovered...but I ran well enough. Had to see where I was. I'll run the rest of the week.

I have a month to train...whoops....not even. The SD 100M is June 3/4. That's a monster.

^ Getting this grow together...but not having the best strike rates...who knows why...sometimes most go....sometimes less go.

6 out of 20 on the Dominion

11 out of 20 on the Cindy DD

* I doubt I'll be doing any breeding with these. Looking for some choice females is the plan. I don't want to bog myself down with males during the summer. Summer is a tough time to be indoors.

Fuck it anyways....my veg studio is jammed tight...can't even be comfortable in there.

Rain on the way

Rain on the way

Supposed to rain this afternoon and all day tomorrow. Helpful....as we're not that far off from the dry summer heat.

^ Here's one of five new apple tree grafts that were put in the ground right before the Old Goat 50 race...looks like they were planted on 3/21...and it looks like the grafts have taken. Because we get frost at about any given time during the spring...it's difficult to find cultivars that will make it through bloom without getting zapped. We have a really big tree that has given us bumper harvests only 2x since we've owned this property. Most seasons...it's just a shade tree. The dude that gave us these grafts promised they'd work...but I'm skeptical. Planning on keeping these trees small if they work out...tightly spaced mini orchard with trained branches.

^ Flowering cilantro. Letting this stuff go to seed..leaving it alone..letting them replenish my stock. Love cilantro. Got to have it around. For some reason the gophers leave it be.

^ Another thing the gophers leave alone...asparagus...4th season...has been productive since March. I eat a stalk of asparagus most every day...right out of the ground...cut it chew it down. Did you know..when it comes to asparagus..we are dealing with male plants?

^ During the fall, winter, and spring I leave a section of my back bed for composting. I moved a large population of worms from their box into this section to help move things along. It's all about growing worms. I dump all my wood ash..kitchen compost...saw chips...rock dust...indoor garden remnants...and yard material in here. In mid June...I'll cover it with top soil and plant over top it. Simple as it gets....makes a highly productive medium.

^ Yes...there it is....my garlic crop (4 different cultivars)...one of my winter crops. Planted on Thanksgiving day....and now..about 1.5 months out from harvest. 200+ bulbs. We'll sell some...gift some..and the rest we use for ourselves. The wife makes her pastes...dehydrates some..cans some...and of course..uses it for cooking. Awesomeness comes in a bulb. You heard it here 1st.

what else? Started carrots last month...along with radishes and lettuces. I've been juicing out of my patch of swiss chard...in lieu of my dandelion patches (they have gone to seed)....but yeah...yes...green juicing every day...at least once a day...but often twice a day.

Juicing is a good thing...keeps you clean

Getting it together

Getting it together

Less than a month to train for the SD 100M...received the 4th update letter from the race director (the legendary Scotty Mills) this morning. I'm racing in the Solo Division...like last year. I'm not allowed a pacer, a crew, or even any spectators at the aid stations or along the trails. Once my wife drops me off at the start...I won't see her until the finish the next day. I'm perfectly content to race solo...the only way I've ever done it. I don't believe in pacers or crews..my drop bags and the aid stations are enough for me. If you can't keep yourself going on your own...then you shouldn't be out there is how I look at racing ultras....

it's not for everyone.

anyways

...the course has been changed this year...so I'm going to have to start looking at it and making my race plan. 100 miles makes for a long day and night. A lot of time on the trails...in the mountains. It's wise to to take an overall view...look at the big picture before the race...because once it starts....the shit comes at you in scary fashions sometimes. One bobble...one wrong turn...one fall...the shit gets deep...very deep. Extremely painful. You have to understand the various pains/exhaustion and mitigate them best you can. Mistakes compound quickly....windfalls...like avalanches once they start rolling and start knocking your foundations out. Having the body deteriorate underneath you...not doing what you need it to do...is one of the worst feelings I've ever experienced in my life. I can not let it get in my head. If the head goes...so goes the body.

^ True to form. This freshly screened hash is the medicine I'm using for the rest of my training and into the race. It should be enough to get me through the next few weeks...and if not...well you dudes know..I'll make more.

.....yeah man....getting my mind and body ready for what's coming. I already started getting butterflies just reading the RD's letter today. I'm going for a sub 24hr finish....that's my goal. This race is in my home mountains...I want to shine best I can. No shit

Been raining here all week - starting to get to me.

I produce way too much wood ash and have to pile it separately.
You juice dandilion greens?
Just fed my plants some "weed tea" last night after cooking a couple of wks. - all dandilions. It's that time of yr.!

Bet your wife commandeers that hash! :D

We need the rain...you know that. I'll take it...but it's coming in cold..which...man...I don't like cold. I'm ready for summer heat.

Yeah...I was documenting in the thread a ways back that I had been juicing dandelion greens weeks prior to the Old Goat race. I let them grow...but now most my good patches are far gone in fuzz...so switched over to chard.

Wifey smokes hash too....have to factor that in. It's ok...I have plants coming in soon. No shortage of material.

Did I tell you? No I didn't...but I already have a vintage 80's era Champion (brand) LA Rams jersey. Old skool...when they were made in the states. My wife found it thrift shopping. I'm officially done with the Bolts. It's a new day. I always supported the LA Rams as my NFC team back in the day...so the transition is not difficult. I'm just over the whole stadium...staying/leaving bullshit. If they want to go....go. moving on.

Love the garlic, too. I think we established that a few years ago earlier in this thread. We used our last of 225 heads of last year's harvest garlic over the last few days. Next harvest is last week of may or first week in June. This year they look bigger and healthier than ever. We gifted about ten heads and ate the rest....along with our massive arugula bed and cilantro forest.
