Smeden has suggested to me the idea of doing a double location cup for next year - one in Europe - the Dam or Barcelona - and one somewhere in Thailand - where in Thailand - I'm yet to decide - Patts (Pattaya) - is currently the front runner next to Bangkok -

Tomorrow I will fly down to Krabi in the south - on the Andaman Sea side of the Thai peninsula- to stay at the Pimalai resort on Koh Lanta for 2 weeks - and will have plenty of time to relax and ponder over the idea of presenting a 4/20 cup in Thailand - its great that all of you guys/gals are already helping me to cement what could turn out to be a great event next year - if we can put it all together within a year - your comments and suggestions are all very valuable to me - and help alot - so thanks to all who post on this thread - group thinking our way - to what could be the trip of a lifetime - to many of us -
My feeling is a cannabis cup in Thailand this year is a bad idea and next year it will be impossible as recreational cannabis will most likely be illegal.

Ordinary Thais were told they would benefit from legalization, but this isn't happening. Instead foreigners are selling imported weed from neon lit shops 100m apart in the capital. Even Thais growing a few plants at home are unhappy with this.

Many Australian states have legal prostitution, but are smart enough not to have neon. Similarly Dutch coffee shops are low profile. All I want is to do my own thing without risk of prosecution, but this is likely to end. Not everything has to be a business opportunity.

The reason Holland is getting tighter, is tourists. Some shops even ask for ID cards.

Thailand looked around the globe, and legalised it for locals only. Not holiday makers.

I'm not going to take drugs illegally in Thailand, and risk getting all the new rights taken away from the Thai people.

High profile events such as this, is what Thai officials will point to. It's exactly what they don't want.

I don't believe this is good for cannabis in Thailand.

@Thighland - agree could easily become illegal again after next election, but let's see who wins. I believe Thailand has issued license to 3+m Thai growers. These growers will not be happy with a U turn.

I don't buy much weed from dispensaries, but I enjoy testing from time to time. All dispensaries I buy from are ordinary Thai owners = they are benefitting. The products are slowly changing from import to local grown = ordinary Thai growers are benefitting more and more.
Even big companies like GHS needs min 51% Thai ownership to start up in Thailand = it benefits the Thai partner and all the Thai companies who delivered materials. And we can assume that GHS have 100-200 Thai staff employed = Thai employees are benefitting.
I had same opinion as you, due to import buds being sold. But when we dig a bit deeper the legalization has created a lot of jobs and income for many Thais. I think.

@Ca++ Cannabis is currently legal in Thailand, unless you talk about extracts or plan to light up in a public place.

I don't think ICMAG should worry too much about hosting/co-hosting a High profile event in Thailand.
Legalaew 7th Cannabis Cup was hosted June 2022.

It looks like it was great fun and well arranged. The joint must be one of the biggest ever made in the world + the weed cannon looks like a very nice welcoming feature.
Strange there is no info on their 8th cup, which should be on Thursday? so maybe you are correct, and the government has put a stop to this?

Are you sure it's legal? All I see are people being hopeful, and corrected.

The government site still indicates you need to be a resident citizen of 20yo+

I was not aware there had already been a 420 festival. However I don't feel it wise still. Such events are not in the spirit of the legalisition plans they had. Though how it was written had even the police confused, the feeling behind it wasn't this. Though, things can change in either direction.

It's a genuine concern. Some countries have trialed legalisation, and rapidly done a U-Turn as people flooded onto the streets with it. All countries are watching others for clues as to what works, and what doesn't. As someone who lives in the hope of legalisation, but knowledge we tried and fucked it up... I'm looking at my own chances, by protecting theirs.

They are calling next month's election a referendum on ganja, with the party that supports recreational use polling 3%. All the others want only medical, which was legalization was supposed to be about.

Instead of feilds of hemp, it's lights and imported products. Now it's 420, backward baseball caps, neon and rap music. Dispensaries run by either wealthy Thais or foriegners. It's a bit much for the locals, who remember ganja with a laid back vibe.

Let's not forget history, things could get messy if they try to get the paste back in the tube. Lest we forget, the war on drugs

Can you post a link to this?
Cannabis in flower form (non-extracts) is declassified and just as legal as a banana. +20yo, but not split between residents and foreigners.
Where to smoke/vape is a "grey zone". You can be fined if you are smoking in public or causing a nuisance to the public.

@Thighland We will just have to wait and see after the election, this is Thailand so nothing is certain before being official in Royal Gazette. And if there are 3m licensed growers, then their families will most likely vote towards a business they have invested in.

Laws and reality are a different thing here. In some areas they were growing prior to legalization, while now there are some villages that still ban it. Doesn't matter what the law says.

So Thai kids are buying online and not studying, sure it's better than meth, but not everyone sees that point

@Thighland please check post #4 = I fully agree. Some regulations are necessary, but this doesn't mean Cannabis will back on the narcotics list. We will have to wait and see what the election brings.
It should never be sold to minors, but these minors also buy glue for sniffing in this part of the world + a yaba pill is 10 baht in the remote regions = meth is destroying thousands of families every year.

My man Good morning :) take a toke and chill I will suggest .

To much drama in your talks and generalizations.

I wonder which countries where the ones people went to streets after legalization?

Thailand is doing great, now the water is on the ditch and cant turn it back that is the fact .
Is a huge businesses and their economy took a big breath after Corona by entering hard in to the tourism completion.
Many thousand of Thai got licenses and have invested already in the business alot of money

Thai population them self ,cant make Canna industry profitable with out the foreigners currencies,

Money talks Tourist bring them this is how planet works.

I don't understand how a village can ban a plant/flower/product that currently is legal by law?
Do you mind sharing the names of the villages you mention?
Thai residents need a license to grow, but the flower itself is not illegal unless found on a person less than 20yo - or pregnant women.

Declassified in terms of the narcotics register. Just like car ownership, there will still be regulations though. As yet, what you can actually do with cannabis is a grey area. The hemp and mj regs bill is still not finalised. I don't read Thai to look at the gazette, but I do listen to them explaining what they want to achieve. Which is not the situation described on the street.

Voting is very much in favour of the Pheu Thai party, who are going to tighten up the strings.

As is normal, people are hearing what they want to hear. The bill will be finalised before long. Only then can it be enforced.

Declassified and decriminalised doesn't mean deregulated. Only they have not written the regs yet. Which in all likelihood, will be written in response to how people have behaved.

Currently I am in Bangkok Thailand for this month - and due to cannabis flowers being completely legal to grow and show now - combined with the huge proliferation of new cannabis shops - which are evident and everywhere - I thought that it would be a great idea to present next years cup here - already I have found an organiser who is willing to help develop the idea - over the coming year - it would only be legal to show cannabis flower - since concentrates (hash etc) are not legal to do so -

My thoughts are why don't you have the competition in the USA at least once before moving it to SE Asia.

We have underage prostitutes in the US also and our beer is cheaper.

In New York humans can hold and transport 3 ounces of flower and 24 grams of hash in PUBLIC and smoke Cannabis anywhere that it is legal to smoke cigarettes. We can have 5 legal pounds in private at home.
Seed sales are now fully legal.

You have the cup here in a big city and you will sell 100x as many tickets as you would in Thailand and get top dollar for the seeds and Shwag you want to vend.

Bring the Cup to the USA. It's way past time...

Two different things
Two different countries
Two different continents
Two different cups.
Simple :)

Finally made it to Koh Lanta - and the Pimalai resort - was some delay on the flight from Bkk to Krabi - then the speedboat from Krabi pier to the resort - so arrived just as the sun went down over the Andaman Sea - which was beautiful - checked in very tired - but managed thru a late dinner of calamari's - a healthy salad and a hot and sour fish dish - was falling asleep at the table - due to having only 3 hours sleep the night before - one of the resorts golf buggy/taxi's got me back to the villa and bed - didn't even have the energy to roll a spliff before I crashed around 10pm - now up at 5.16am - on the coffee waiting for the sun to come up - should be light in an hour -

- After reading up on this thread - seems like there is much to take into consideration before deciding on going ahead with a 4/20 cup in Thailand - not least the potential outcome of this coming election - and how it might effect the legality of staging such an event here in Thailand - I wouldn't want to do it - if it risked seeing the inside of a jail cell again - and as for putting a 4/20 on in the USA - that might be difficult with my record - although the feds did finally drop the charges againt me for international seed dealing back in 2018 - after they failed to extradite me from the UK - after having me detained in the Philippines for 2 and a half years - in the Camp Bagong Diwa detention jail in Manila -
