too much wattage?

too much wattage?

Dear 150w gurus:

I am making a micro grow cab with growing space of 1'x1.5'x1.5'tall.

Is this too small a space for a 150 w HPS? Will it get too hot?

I was thinking of using the 150w econolight, mounted in a chamber above the grow chamber, shooting light down through an opening in the ceiling of the growing chamber. Since the fixture itself will be outside (above) the growing chamber, I thought that would keep the temperature lower inside the chamber.

Any advice?

If you can mount the 150w HPS outside of the 1 x 1.5 x 1.5 area and have it cooled somehow, you might be able to pull that off. That's a pretty small area, I'd suggest LST and topping if you can. Might wanna go 12/12 from seed too, but that's a whole other decision.

I'm with bounty on this one. The light will need to be outside of the mentioned space, be separated by a glass sheet, and both enclosures will need to have good ventilation. Given those conditions, I'm willing to bet it will work fine. Of course, using it as a flower only chamber will also help. I'd start my seeds, or root my clones elsewhere, and keep this running at 12/12.

glass panel?

glass panel?

Thanks much Bounty29 and Pipedream.

Just curious - why should I separate the light from the growing chamber with a glass panel?

And is a 150w too much? Would you recommend going down to 70w for such a small space?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Hey Looopy

I always recommend setting up the lighting for 50 Watts / square foot. A 70W would be ideal for your growbox.

I separate the lights from the growchamber with glass in my two growbox designs.

Hope this helps ya!

My 150 HPS cab is 2' x 1' and I pulled 3.75 oz out of it with a 2 plant grow. One plant was 2.25 oz.

I figure your box could pull around 3 oz/grow.

red greenery what size pots do you use? and what strains have you grown and been able to pull a yield like that? I also flower in a 2 x 1 ft space with a 150 hps in 2 and 3 gallon pots and my biggest yield was 1.5 oz off two plants. They strain i have is pretty on the sativa side though. Im looking forward to see what i can do with some indicas.

CB87 & Loopy - you'd be surprised just how well a 150 will do, especially with a little practice and some careful planning. I've been using it for years and average almost 2 ounces per plant. Some a bit more. Given, my box is quite a bit larger, but the light is the same and my pot size is quite small. I pretty much stick with pure Sativas.

Generally it will in soil based set-ups. However in hydro, they can get pretty large. My tubs are only 5 quarts or liters in capacity. And, I never have more than 1 gallon of liquid in them. The sativas are allowed to reach about 3 feet in height. Although, even with good planning, they sometimes get larger than I anticipate and hit the top of the box.....

Hello everyone, looks like I'll be joining the fun! Former CFL grower here, now working on a 2x2x2.5 cabinet / stealth desk with a 150hps. Coco coir and perhaps a vertical c-scrog too. We shall see :D

PS, Any tips for ventilation in a space this size? Noise is of an upmost concern as I live in an apartment, and I can hear my neighbors bloody bathroom fan when they turn it on  (im prety sure its a crappy old beast though). I've made a home made scrubber so it would probably have to have a little kick. Thanks for any tips!

Hey Lemon and welcome to the 150 club

For your ventilation needs I would suggest checking into the panasonic whisper fans as these are very quiet, whazen grows with these. Another method is to have a separate chamber for your lamp and vent both using quiet pc fans such as red_greenery has done.

Also be aware that how you mount and the type of ballast you get for your 150 can make a big difference. I know that my 150 ballast hums louder than the 134 cfm dayton blower I use to exhaust my cabinet.

Hey Sugabear, hows it going.

I looked into those Panasonic fans, and they look fantastic. Thanks! A bit on the big side, but i think I've worked out a way to use one and still keep it stealth.

What I've been thinking about doing is using a cool tube style setup thats ducted on both ends with its very own computer fan ventilation. Since it won't ever draw air from the inside of the case, it won't need a scrubber and should hopefully be easy to ventilate. The blower fan would then remove ambient heat from the cabinet. I've never done this before, so I hope that's a sound plan.

The HPS I plan to use (havent got it yet) is a modified security light, as it looks like yours is as well... so I may have to deal with that noise. How bad is it.... fridge loud? LOUD loud? heh.. I'll find out soon.

Thanks again

Hey Lemon, welcome to the club.

Hey Suga, Pipe...you guys seen these new ballast? 79$ sounds like a decent deal not only in that you wont have to mod it but the fact it's a digi.

My grow/cabs have gone through extensive modifications recently. I'll update with pics in a few. The 150 is at 50 days, the 430 is at 56 days and the 100 is producing some amazing looking seedlings.

hey hawaiian808 - thanks for the link - yeah I saw those - I would definetly get one of those if I was looking to upgrade or build a new one - Lemon if you can afford it - go for it and tell us how it works out. If you do go that way I recommend the medium based socket as opposed to the mogul based socket.
