150w HPS Club and Resource Guide......

Hello all, my name is Duck. Here's some bagseed at 28 days. I have one 150 watt HPS lamp in a box with a 2' square footprint. I've been lurking this forum for almost a year now. What a difference it makes reading the invaluable advise from all you experts. I just want to express my sincere thanks for all the help! Dr. Hydro, this is my second grow. I grew three sativa dominant females my first attempt and barely got an ounce. This one still has about a month or so to go and I think it alone will get me close to double the first batch. When I get things dialed in I'll probably attempt to grow two plants at the same time. Heat is a major problem right now, working on a new exhaust setup at the moment.

Thanks namo. Thought I'd show my set-up to those of you (all of you) that inspired me to grow.

picked this audio cabinet up at a yard sale...

...ripped out all the unusable stuff and divided the grow space.

LEDs in the veg section...

...150w HPS in flower

...dank, over-ripe lemon smell

welcome aboard, greenhead, discoduck and hype !

i just found out that temps at my canopy level are not quite as low as i thought they were. it turns out that it's 90F up there ! :bashhead: this would seem to explain why my plants never flower as nicely as they veg. i left the cabinet door open all day and when i re-checked the temp it was down to 80F. i think i can live with that . i am also thinking that i should change the lighting schedule to have lights on at night (when ambient temps are cooler), this should knock the temp. down a couple more degrees . to do this, i would have to have the lights off for 24 hours, but from what i understand this should be no problem; i will just lose 1 days worth of growth, right ?

green, an easy way to change over a lighting schedule is to put them under low level lighting for 24 to 48 hours then bring them into the new schedule with the HPS. A CFL is perfect for this, but you can even do it with an incandescant light as well. The young lady will just think its a cloudy day.

Let me send out a "howdy" to Duck, namo, hype, and any other new members I've neglected. Sorry for the delay, but my life has been in a bit of upheaval lately. I look forward to seeing your contributions to our little group. Welcome Aboard & Welcome to the Crew!

thanks for the suggestion, pipedream. i went ahead and left a cfl on at the end of todays 12 hr. light cycle. tomorrow evening she goes onto the new schedule.

hi, namo . i could take a guess , but that's about all that it would be . i'll leave it up to a more experienced hand to say what might be going on with your plant . interesting looking plant though. i'll have to go back after this entry and check to see whether you mentioned the strain. if you didnt. what is it ?

also before signing off, a look at my next grow ...

these are 2 sartoris from seed . they are TINY. thats a ball-pont pen for reference. the plants are 4 days above soil when these pics were taken. when i sprouted these the emerging shoots got a little dry ... i wonder if thats why they are so small ?

Hi I'm a fan of the 150w crew and recently got a hold of a 150w hps myself. I haven't started anything yet because I'm moving out of my current place soon. I want to do something small in my new place, but I have a concern.

The apartment complex I'm moving to has utilities included in the rent. In my state I know it is illegal for property owners to charge their tenants for utilities if they don't have separate meters for each unit, but I'm concerned that the complex may have some way of tracking my usage. I don't know anything about how homes are wired for electricity, so does anyone know if I should be worried?

I wouldn't be concerned at all. Your entire setup including a small veg room, 150w hps and exhaust system should run less than 300w total which is less than a desktop computer. If you are really paranoid, switch all the lightbulbs in the place to 13w cfls, and run the hps at night time in off peak hours(helps control heat as well). Leave the a/c set higher in the daytime and turn off all lights and computers when done using them, and turn the fridge and freezer up a little bit so that they don't run as often. Also line dry clothes so that you don't have to use the dryer. These things may be overkill, but they will help you actually lower your bill more than the hps will raise it. The increase is literally only about 5 dollars or less per month. :joint:

P.S. now get growing, you'll thank yourself!

The power drawn by a 150w HPS, even running 24x7, isn't even a blip on the radar. Once it warms up, it draws no more than an ordinary bulb. Just look at the spec tag on your ballast. Many folks keep a light going all night long so they don't bump into things as they move around after dark. Have no fear, nobody will ever notice your power useage.

I'm considering running 2 150w HPS in homemade cooltubes side by side in a C25 sized cab. I plan on scrogging some number (likely 4) of plants in soil. What size fan would I need to keep these lights cool and to scrub the exhaust of the whole box? I was thinking a 6in vortex (449 CFM) on a speed controller, but even that seems kinda overkill (I may upgrade the light later, this is my first time:). Also, what should I expect yield-wise, assuming I screw up like a n00b but not completely, bare minimum?
(You can ignore the last question if you like, I know it's not always wise to speculate)

I'll give you am honest answer from someone who's made a lot of poor decisions when it comes to buying grow equipment. I've literally pissed about $2500 or more down the drain buying things that I didn't need, as I've upgraded and changed things without doing research and started projects and not finished, etc, etc. One impulse purchase that I made when making a 400w cab in a c25 actually, was a 6" elicient inline fan. I've never regretted it for one second. I currently use it to vent two cabs now (250w and 208w fluoro) (veg and flower). It's set on 1/3 speed with a controller and could easily do two or three more with some tinkering and have juice to spare. If you've got the cash get it; mine's also run non-stop for 3 years, with no maintenance.

As far as yield goes, check out a thread about yukon's cabinet, he runs 2-150s and his yield was about 5-6 ounces if I remember correctly. Here's the linky.
