and the M3A-1 .45ACP Grease Gun. I shot this at an Okinawa based Force Recon base that was fitted with a silencer.. What a great little gun. Also 'side of the barn' accurate but puts out big bullets.. THAT was fun.

EDIT: OOPS!

i'd like to have one of those. damn things were almost entirely stamped out of sheet metal other than the barrel. dirt damn cheap...plus, shot same ammo as pistols the GIs carried.

Is it possible to shoot a mountain lion with a shotgun, if you wanted to discourage it, but not seriously wound it ?

'not seriously wound it' means, the shot is embedded close enough to the surface, in the hindquarters, so that it will eventually fall out - like when I wait 2 weeks for a splinter or piece of gravel under the fingernail to work it's way out.

And, not a head shot. Don't want to take a chance on blinding it. Just want it to stop thinking of my place - on the edge of the cat's home - as a good place for a night-time buffet.

https://palmettostatearmory.com/win...r-x-shotshell-ammunition-25-rounds-xu208.html

That's Winchester 20 gauge, shot size 8, 1210 fps.

Last night was another night of mountain lion watch, after losing 2 birds each of the previous 2 nights. 6 birds still going last night, 6 birds left this morning.

I went out around midnight & put a bunch of aviary wire around the old white Silkie, who was back to roosting 7 feet off the ground. Fortunately her 2 children were back to their roost 10 feet off the ground.

I also put out spotlights on the back deck, since the darkness gives the cat the element of surprise. Fired one shot of 300 blackout into the hill behind the deck, thinking that might have a deterrent effect.

If you cut the shell down past the shot but before the cup you can just tamp rock salt into the barrel after you load that "round" (powder and cup only) with a cleaning patch to hold it tight.

PS Using an egg candler works well to see where to cut your shell.

PPS Have saboted slugs in your tube after that one. Just in case.

You are building a cabin at the edge of town (in the city limits). And you have to extend all services by 200 ft. You can't opt out because you are within the city limits. And you find out that extending the town services (water, sewer, electricity and road will cost you $100,000. Now that is living in the country.

No it isn't.

Country is more like actually building your cabin.

I think you're in a suburb.

No, small mountain town. No stop light and if you blink you miss it. 20 minutes to the nearest grocery store and 90 miles from Denver. I certainly am not in the middle of nowhere but pretty much country living and lifestyle. Now my house in the city is definitely in a suburb. Oh, I did build it or served as the general contractor. I am to old for that kind of work.

The manufacturer claims that DB ammo will not damage shotgun barrels, but it will foul it up real good, one claim is that a single DB shot equals the gunk of a whole box of regular shotgun shells.

Don't accidentally be cookin' up any of your birds ;)

Those would blind the shit out of that kitty at night.

I don't want to injure it permanently.

I just want it to realize that my neck of the woods is no longer a good place for a night-time buffet. Even if I still have birds, outdoors.

Maybe my next coop will have the birds 12 feet off the ground, and a little high voltage for anything that tries to crawl but not fly to the roosting area.

You can get a fence charger for 60$, just need to have a defined area to put the fence around. Wire coop will slow down most of the predators.
I have a neighbor who lets his chickens run loose, he doesn’t lose many, but he has an Australian blue healer running around.
The only neighbors that have visits/issues with larger predators have no dogs.
After several lost chickens over the last four years I put up a game camera.
At least one Fox comes by every night, sometimes two at a time and up to four a night.
Skunk comes 3-4 times a week
Raccoon 2-3 times a month
Bobcat 4/5 times a year
Lion 3-4 times a year
Black bear 10-15 times a year

Thanks for the info !

I found the Raccoon kill to be the most painful. You could see that it was not a quick death.

I don't feel as bad about the mountain lion casualties. I know it was very quick, a merciful death for the bird.

I lost my old pet-sitter to America's terrible health care. Showed a friend the ropes, hopefully he can fill the pet sitter shoes.

How much would you guys pay for a pet-sitter ? I would pay $20 a day, more if they have to visit 2 times a day.

I talk to people with animals that are chained to their homes & small farms because of all their animals, can't step away for more than one night.

If you didn't have family or friends to sit your multiple pets, how much would you pay ?

I mean if you have 5 or more animals. I have 4 cats and am down to 6 birds.

Looks like the only ones that will reproduce are the tiny birds, the Silkies, which tend to be good flyers and roost in places that are hard for predators to get to. I really like it when the mother teaches her babies the survival skills.
