Had a gun rack in my ford pick up. Everybody did.
In high school, half the pick-ups in student parking had a rifle hanging in the back window...we would hunt after classes during deer season...and no one ever fired a gun at school.

You have a neighbor who burns his burn piles as wet as possible, creating as much smoke as possible, because "nobody's going to tell him how to burn"

He's a retired fireman who knows how to burn dry.

He's angry because more than one neighbor reported him for a zoning violation. Then when he took it out on me with a death threat & some smokey burns, I wrote 2 emails.

What really hurts is the opporunity cost - the opportunity to be neighborly with your neighbor.

He has Asperger's and is too easily angered to be called High Functioning Autistic like Bill Gates. What that boils down to is, paperwork freaks him out. I've seen it throw him into a rage. His reaction is like when I hold my cat above the bathtub full of water.

Though as far as I know, my neighbor doesn't have fleas. My cat has fleas and need a bath. I need to figure out a set-up with a handheld spray thing.

You know you live in the country if......

You can take all the stems and trim from 10 lbs. of bud,, (the stuff you don't keep to sift),,,
and just throw it off your front porch in the yard, and it doesn't matter...

'cause it's too damn cold and rainy to carry it 100 feet, to dispose of it in the woods...

Here old people still wear "madreñas" or "galochas", sort of clogs similar to the dutch ones, only that local countryfolk wear them instead of decorating the windowsill. They're shoes for shoes, so when you're at home with the slippers and want to go to the canteen, like 2km away from accross fields, the madreñas are waiting at the doorstep will take you there, 'cos they're like mud ships. And when you arrive in the canteen, just leave them out and walk in with your slippers. I've seen people in their pajamas having a beer'n'tapa at lunch time in rainy days. Using wellies you would need a few minutes for cleaning up the soles with a hose before entering the bar. I'll get me a pair of madreñas for the winter. From € 30.

You hear your normally sectetive neighbor yell for you. You say where are you. And he he screams "I'm getting high!". He was on top of his roof fixing a leak.

Nobody around to hear except me.

Any opinions on the best tools for discouraging predators ? (besides the human mind, if it's working right)

Lost 2 more birds to a predator last night, a fat Barred Rock hen that was about 15 feet off the ground in a tree.

And a Rhode Island Red that was about 6 feet off the ground on some shelving on the back porch.

I'm pretty sure it was a Cougar.

I don't want to shoot it dead, and there is little chance that I could. I'm beginning to understand why 20 gauge shotguns are a common farm tool.

Will let the birds roost indoors in the spare bathroom for a few nights.

I always have my pellet loaded and ready to go. Mostly coyotes like Red but we get tons of critters living in the foot hills above Denver. Not uncommon for a bear to wander through. Occasionally you hear about a cougar but I have never seen one. Coons, foxes and skunks are everywhere.

I never let my dog walk outside the yard without me. She would be a nice Thanksgiving dinner for the first coyote that walked by.
