I never let my dog walk outside the yard without me. She would be a nice Thanksgiving dinner for the first coyote that walked by.

glad to see that you don't leave your little one on her own.

fairly certain I've mentioned this before, even for the 30 seconds it takes my dog to pee I have my flashlight in one hand and my pistol in the other; so aside from deer (seeing a big buck spooked little Suzi last night), I shoot @ any eyes that appear on the woods edge. Can't recall but in over 23 yrs @ this location I've killed either 2 or 3 coyote.

When I lived in the country; 1998-2008...I came home from the evening shift, about midnight.

When I opened the front door, I saw my wife sitting on the couch with all the guns on the coffee table and the two dogs hiding on the couch with her.

She said something usual was outside, earlier. It made a noise that she had never heard before and scared the shit out of her & dogs!

So...I got the big Mag flashlight and M1 Carbine/30 round clip and went outside to look around. I didn't see anything, but I kept thinking about that movie: 'Silver Bullet'. Fools walking around in the dark. :D

Any opinions on the best tools for discouraging predators ? (besides the human mind, if it's working right)

Lost 2 more birds to a predator last night, a fat Barred Rock hen that was about 15 feet off the ground in a tree.

And a Rhode Island Red that was about 6 feet off the ground on some shelving on the back porch.

I'm pretty sure it was a Cougar.

I don't want to shoot it dead, and there is little chance that I could. I'm beginning to understand why 20 gauge shotguns are a common farm tool.

Will let the birds roost indoors in the spare bathroom for a few nights.
Raccoons are the number one predator of chickens in these parts. Bobcats are number 2.

I used to have outdoor cats....that is until a coyote got one. From that day forward every coyote gets a pellet in the ass/tail. I don't want to kill just discourage from coming around.

I had to close off my pet door cause coons kept coming in the house and eating cat food. I was on a fishing trip and one night the wife heard something so she got up to investigate and found 3 coons in the kitchen....no more pet door.

a chicken killed while roosting 15 ft off the ground suggests a great horned owl; although a coon could get out on any limb that would hold a chicken too.

There was a pile of Barred Rock feathers - the smaller feathers, not her big feathers - in the driveway about 50 yards from their roosting tree.

The weather has been abnormally dry, only .8 inches of rain in October when the normal is 3+ inches. Looking the same for November.

That means animals have been scavenging wildly for water since June.

July, August, September, October. 5 months is a long time to go without a proper drink of water.

Of course everybody leaves tubs out, which might be more of a predator magnet.

When it's so dry, I think the predators use other animals as a glass of water, as well as food. That increases mortality, and towards the end of the summer you end up with some really desperate animals.

One of the hens was taken on a shelf 6 feet high on the back porch. Generally I think wild animals will come near human habitat but don't like being surrounded by it. They know about traps etc.

I was going to let the animals inside for a few nights and give them a perch about 12 feet high on the back porch. If they don't like that, they'll not make it.

I think it helps if the birds are submerged or hidden in their perch 7 or whatever feet off the ground, so they can't be seen from ground level.

I hate mountain lions.

I don't hate

I hate mountain lions.

Did something happen ?

The 2 birds that disappeared last night had wonderful lives. Free ranging, all you can eat, people food + chicken food + free range food like adult lizards.

That surprised me the first time I saw it, an adult chicken wolfing down an adult lizard about 7 inches long. Head first, and it is gone after some exaggerated swallowing motions.

I parked a 300 blackout rifle with some ear-muffs by the back door. But - running outside 1/2 naked to face a 150 pound hungry cat at 2 AM in the morning ? What if it sees 180 pounds of FOOD ? I think they had a scene like that in a movie that had a happy ending - for the cat.

M1 Carbine is fun to shoot. The wife was a good shot with it. We would load up the Bronco II 4x4 with guns and go four wheeling in the boonies.
Those were some good times! :kos:

P.S....during WWII/Korea..I'm pretty sure the carbine guys invented the Double Tap! :D

Just scanned the previous two pages and I see things are similar in your country to Australia ... in a sense.

there are plenty of cats here. they are imports and have eaten half the native wildlife. in the wild they grow very big and are super cunning.

Dingoes here take pet dogs just like you describe that Coyotes do. Dingoes also eat cats. In arid regions where there are small trees and bushes climbing to safety is fraught for the cat because dingoes will follow them up the tree to kill them.

The M1 carbine (carbine=small rifle) is not the 'M1 Garand' (<full sized rifle) that shoots a 30-06 (or is it .308?) that you sees in many WWII flicks. I've shot the M1 Carbine in VN, for war and personal protection, it's a POS, a 30 cal pistol cartridge in a little rifle. light in weight, no knock down power, little recoil, not very accurate over 50 yards and, yes, fun to shoot.. carried in battle by many officers, armored vehicle personnel as backup survival weapons along with the colt .45acp pistol and other stupid/lazy MFers. Wonder if it still has a place in the military today? Doubt it.

It sounds like 30 Carbine.

That would be a little smaller than 300 Blackout, which is basically 357 Magnum in rifle form.

they were widely used by paratroopers in european theater, and in island hopping across the pacific. little to no recoil, and a man could carry LOTS of ammo. had one years ago, even took it deer hunting. thank God i never saw a deer then, underpowered rounds & nothing available but FMJ mil surplus ammo. lots of fun to shoot though. was offered an M2, full auto version a few years back, wish i had bought it. at $250, a steal...probably WAS stolen, lol...

That sounds like it would be similar to the KG9 that figures into the plot of Sons of Anarchy. Basically a full-auto pistol. Lightweight with very little recoil = not much power.

and the M3A-1 .45ACP Grease Gun. I shot this at an Okinawa based Force Recon base that was fitted with a silencer.. What a great little gun. Also 'side of the barn' accurate but puts out big bullets.. THAT was fun.

this is my bad boy on the block piece, Mossberg FLEX 500 Tactical Pump w/the Breacher barrel. That barrel is so thick & very vented, so much so that you can jam the barrel against a door jam @ the lockset or the hinges & pull the trigger, you'll knock that shit right out & the gun will sustain no damage.

This is the same configuration as mine, the Flex portion of the description means interchangeable (quick) fore ends, grips, stock, heavy as a mofo, this never goes into the field, strictly a home defense gun.
