I tried taking a class at a rural community college.

It was like a high school run by the TSA.

I found a much more collegial environment at the local shooting range. There, there are people like a retired Marine sniper instructor, and the state police firearms technician, who seem to enjoy talking about firearms technology.

I am personally obsessed with finding the bullets that have the best BC, at each weight.

One example is the Sierra Palma 150 grain 308. Most 150 grain 308's have a BC around .4. The Sierra Palma has a BC of .505.

Of course, BC isn't really important till you are shooting at targets past 300 yards, and there are very few shooting ranges that have targets past 300 yards.

Of course, it might not be a rural-urban thing. I think if I lived in the city of Boise Idaho, people would be more firearms literate than in, for example, rural Sonoma County California.

Also I found a 69 grain .223 bullet with a BC of .375. Up till now one of the best compromises was the Hornady 68 grain with the BC of .359. Anytime you can pick up .016 of BC with a weight cost of 1 grain, that's a good compromise.

I had a Remington 700 bdl w/a bull barrel, a straight 20X Unertl scope & mounts rifle was a .22-250. With factory Remington ammo I could drop 5 inside the X every time @ 200 yards, woodchucks out to 350-375 yards, again w/Remington factory ammo.

Could I have done better w/my own reloads? :dunno: I had all the equipment from A-Z, RCBS Rock Chucker... I bought it all to reduce the cost of my Weatherby Magnum shells, costing me a fortune, and this is back in 1979-80 prices. Then my uncle, a licensed firearms dealer starting getting me extremely nice deals on W'by factory ammo.

the Rock Chucker went unused until sold to a friend.......

DAMN !! That's a double awesome post.

Weatherby brass is beautiful. Love the rounded corners. They should make lamps - or Cannabis pipes - too.

So true about 5 gallon buckets. Twice I have asked the local hardware store if I can have the old 5 gallon buckets when they have a "bucket sale". So then I get to go through stacks of hundreds of buckets to pick out the good ones.

It took me about 6 months to get the stuck ones apart. I didn't even try.

UNERTL! They were the sought after target scopes in the 50s/60s.. they still make them?Or do you just have a long memory??:biggrin:
EDIT: and yes, groups would have been tighter with worked up reloads..

....woodchucks out to 350-375 yards ...

 When you live in the country and yer out walking the fields, if you happen to see a woodchuck nearby dive into a hole, you can go up to that hole and make grunting woodchuck sounds (similar to a frog)
and that chuck will poke it's head out and 'talk' to you! :tiphat:

..... no, honest, I've DONE this before, it really does works!

..... STILL trying to erase the memory
