Butte, I have a few more questions, IF you are into answering them...
You mention judicious pruning. Do you cut out all growth from middles getting no light, only some, pull fans, what? It seems I should leave some of it to maybe harvest a few days after the 'outer layer' has been pulled off. Cutting everything but that outer layer seems a little counterproductive to growing big plants.
Also, sage monkey...never heard of it. Any info?
Another- how the hell did you LOSE five huge plants? Gopher, overwatering?

Tom and his crazy plants...lol....simply awesome. Best I've ever seen was 12+ lbs from an NL#5 x Haze cut that looked like Haze really. The plant was over a year old and finished in a greenhouse around December 7 2006. It was about 20' x 20' x 10' when harvested. The grower was Guano Tea. There's pics up at another site but not gonna go back...again...and dig em up. My buddy grew one plant a year for his personal smoke...and he smoked a lot of herb.

I use 1/2" inline emitter tubing. You can get it from dripworks in Willits or online. You can get it in 6"-36" spacing and 1/2 gallon to 1 gallon per hour. Fisher, for the kind of planters you are using you wrap the tubing in a spiral on the top of the planter and stake it down with wire hold downs. I mostly use 12" spacing 1gallon per hour tubing. They are pressure compensating, if you grow on a hill all the plants will still get the same amount of water. On rows I run 3-4 lines down each row. I also use filters to keep the emiters from clogging. I water every other day with automatic timers. You can connect the tubing with 1/2" couplers. They sell these ones that twist and lock onto your tubing so you don't have to use pain in the ass hose clamps. Installing an automatic watering system really changes the limits of how much one person can grow.

H2O, you've never seen a well in use? They're extremely popular in rural areas. It is drilled professionally, then a pump is used to draw the water up. Mine is electric, run off a generator but I would like to go solar.

Start with the outer circle and spiral it around the planter till you get to the stalk. The size of your drip emitter spacing will determine how long of a run of the hose you need to use. When you turn it on you want to make sure every area of your planter is getting watered.

Big grows like Tom's exist in my neck of the woods, but spread out in the hills. Nothing like his would fly around here at all.
Now, back in the day...before afghan pot became all the rage, grown plants were tall..I mean real tall. It was common to tend a 15-16 footer grown on a hill w/prepared soil in buried hefty bags. I was never privy to weights and such, but I can't imagine one of those old colombian 15fters being much less than 8-10 lbs. Trunks the size of folgers cans.
(lol...thinking so far back...i remember we used to get our soil checked at the county extension office for free, and doctor it from there...we dint have no stinkin meters,,,lol)
