we were allowed to drink on the commuter trains leaving NYC and heading to the burbs, in fact they had the 'bar car' a designated coach that had a bartender w/a portable bar (altered shopping cart & coolers) that would set up & sell drinks right in one of the trains doorways. I always bought 2 Fosters oil cans or 3 Heineken from the deli (better prices) in Grand Central, I'd knock those beers back in the 32 minute ride
