I'll keep the Carbon and Opalka seeds for next year but the Chestnut and Sun Gold don't qualify. :bigeye:

I know Sun Gold is very popular but i prefer savory kind of tomatoes, rather than the sweeter ones.

it's corn season again !

it grows so well in these alkaline soils and abundant ground water .

for the second season i have used a product called D-TER to help combat the bird problem ..for years i've netted the trees which is a drama in itself . now though ,...no nets ! the little silver eyes sit in the trees surrounding my fruit trees , drooling , but not one will come for a feed . non toxic but gives the birds a sense of insecurity ,,

almost like witchcraft !

I will have to look into D-Ter.... nice corn :)

My tomatoes are pretty much toast now.... all sun burnt and ugly.
I think i've figured out that i can do 2 crops- 1 in spring and one in autumn, and just mostly avoid summer.
I just planted my first ever F1 cross i made of Opalka x Cherokee Chocolate :whee:
Happy New year. :ying:

This Solar Flare has a very strong flavor, just a strong zesty tomato flavor, the Black Beauty has a more unusual taste, i don't know how to describe it, not as zesty but still good.
If you want a tomato with a STRONG flavor i recommend Solar Flare.

Isn't aluminium linked to alzheimer disease? Or is this a safe form?

not sure explosiv , i think that has been debunked to an extent .
the fruit after spraying needs to be washed anyhow , just because the spray is quite bitter afterwoods .

that solar flare looks very attractive ignignokt . i've tried those black ones before and there not to my taste much .
cheers .

Hi Rod,
Yes the Solar Flare is impressive looking and tasting, the flavor really 'pops' more than most i have tried.
The Black Beauty is the best black/blue tomato i have grown so far, i tried Indigo Rose a few times but that grows smaller fruit with less taste....
I'll probably be growing both these varieties again.

I’ve used styptic pencils made of alum for shaving nicks and cold sores…maybe a different mix. They use alum in the making of some pickles.

I wish I had some property for a big garden.

Winter herbs

I keep some herbs and lettuce in DWC, right in the kitchen. Ready to make a nice pesto.

My vegetables, especially tomato plants have been getting fried by the heat. I started to neglect them once the heat started getting too hot, it's not worth putting in any effort once the heat gets too much for them.... the peppers handle it ok but a lot of the fruit gets sunburn.
Most of the recent fruit was ruined but this is a little harvest i got that was unblemished.

Next year i'm planning to increase my vegetable garden harvest 10x

hey ignignokt , your vege's there look pretty good . so you get a bit of heat where you are , what sort of temps do you get ? gets hot here as well , summer can range from 40 to 50c .
my plums stew on the tree as well as some of the veges .
we can't grow tomatoes because the area is rife with fusarium wilt . there's a product called MYCOSTOP and PRESTOP which are bio-cides and is apparently very very good for controlling it . trouble is it's not available in australia because of our bio-security laws .
are you guys affected by fusarium wilt ? or verticillium wilt , much the same i believe !
anyway , nice job there with your tomatoes !

Hi Rod,
Yes we can get into the 40's here too. I think i have figured out a way i can get 2 crops, 1 before and 1 after the worst of summer.
I had a lot more than half of my potential harvest ruined from sunburn.
I'm not really sure whether we have those wilts but i know that tomato plants can be more temperamental than most. Once they start to have problems it seems hard to get them back, but could be because i'm a novice.

I had something last summer in Oregon that I thought was fusarium wilt initially, but it turned out to have been sun burn. When I lived in Arizona I had to put shade cloth on my tomato plants once the core of summer approached or else the sun would destroy them.

well obviously the heat's a problem all over ,..except alaska or iceland ..lol.
that fusarium wilt though is a emerging giant of a problem . this whole area has it and thats 300km x 300kms . i'm in the process of moving to an area where its not heard of , 600km away , and i'm now thinking i might leave all my gardening utensils behind plus all the fruit trees that i had grafted to take with me . i may be able to sterilize some stuff using bleach but its so easy to miss a few spores .
i believe its just not worth the risk , so cut my losses !

The cat's fur is warm, like he's been laying in the sun.

This is the same cat that had the sore throat, mostly recovered.

The LED guys say I can remove the white plastic globes to get more light, but for now I like it the way it is.

It's a mix of Warm (2700K color temp, 15.5 watts) and Cool (5000K, 13.5 watts & 15.5 watts) bulbs.
