Ah, gotcha. Ya, as I was watching and deciding when to harvest I was wondering why the pistils weren't changing either. It's been unusually cold here however temps mostly in the mid 70s with lights on. Since this is the first time a grew LSD I don't know if thats normal for that strain or if my environment caused it. FWIW, the Critical Jack I have thats getting close is doing the same.

Well it's not that unusual and in fact this illustrates why it's not good to judge ripeness by when the hairs change. Most of the time though it's been my experience that the hairs changing come before the trichomes fully ripen not afterward. I usually have my grow at 75- 78 lights on so I don't think it's low temperature causing the issue.

4 x 4 is 16 sq feet

you could have 100 cubic feet if the 4x4 is 6.25 feet tall.

50wpsf is a general target. 100wpsf would be tougher to cool.

If you have a 400 in a 4x4, you're getting ~25wpsf

A more efficient setup with these two components might be to hang the bare bulb vertical. 360 degrees of point-source light as opposed to 180 in a horizontal and reflector setup. You may have fewer plants in the vertical setup but the idea is more net harvest

You really want to run a 1000 watt light in a 4x4 tray in a 5x5 tent 6' 7" tall.
You probably want 3 -600 watt bulbs in a 9' x 3' for full potentcy. You could get away with 3 400s or two 600s perhaps, with some side lighting

lighting...ok if its 100 watts per sq foot...why dose a 400 watt light work in a 4x4 grow tent that is almost 100 sq feet ?

No, 4' x 4' = 16 square feet. A 400W light covering 16 square feet would be 25W per square foot (400W / 16sq ft = 25W per sq foot). Also it's not 100W per square foot. Optimal lighting is said to be 50W per square foot. The average plant indoors takes up 2 square feet and so you can also say 100W per plant when figuring out how many plants you can effectively grow under a HID (doesn't necessarily apply to SOG or ScrOG styles). So in the case of a 400W light you would grow 4 plants under it. You could grow more plants but they would crowd one another and decrease the yield of each individual plant such that the overall yield would be about the same as if you went with 4 plants.

planing a new room 9 feet long..3 feet deep 6 feet tall...what size light do i need

With that length you would be better off with more then one light or if you went with one light it should be on a rail for maximum coverage. I would say 3 x 400W lights or 2 x 600W lights would cover it best. You could cover it with a 1000W but you'd be limiting the light on the width and it wouldn't fully cover the length without using a light mover rail.

many like to maximize their lighting, while i'd rather run the more gentle approach... ive experienced diminishing returns when i switched my 430w hps for 600s... the 600s used more power to yield about the same or maybe less, due to increased temp, and i had to keep the plants much farther back from the bulb (bare vertis)...

but ambient temps and height of the room are often overlooked in the whole watts per foot equation, and as always, youve gotta experiment to see what works in your spot !!!

im 41yrs old growin on 19...same strain since 1992 !!

No actually ambient air temps and room height are more related to ventilation and so get calculated in there. You need to use the room height to calculate the volume of air needing to be moved. If you exchange at a good rate (3-5 room changes per minute) then heat shouldn't be an issue unless you're trying to put in a light that's way too much for your space.

No, 3 x 600W in that small a space is overkill in my opinion and it would raise the watts per square foot up above optimal into the harmful range. The like result would be heat stress and bleaching from too much light intensity.

The tendency is to think that more = better but that's not always true. Sometimes adding more will give you more but in the case of growing plants indoors there are just too many variables to look at things in such simplistic terms.

Thank You Phil

Thank You Phil

They are at 65 days now. I picked 3 branches today, the rest can keep going. One bud is 3" in diameter, and its super dense. The one bud looks like 3 ounces. Im real happy with the quality of this plant

I know you by a different name don't I?

Hi Hemp,

In my veg cab got a 3 plants, 2 about a foot been topped several heads and another from seed about 6 inches tall. (also got a few cuttings which have rooted fine)

The 2 bigger plants have started to flower look at least a week or two into flower?

The light (125watt cfl) has been on 18/6. Its not a great cab use it really to keep mothers alive only this time of year but don`t know why they are flowering. I would have thought stress would have turned them rather than flower them?

Not too worried, put the light on 24/7 so they should go back to veg. If they don`t I will stick them in the flower cab, got more cuttings.....

Don`t really want this happening again so any ideas m8.

Also what should I do with the hairs n bud formation cut them off or leave them.

Cheers

May be rootbound, i've seen them start flowering because of that. Are they Sativa's?
