Just my opinion. But unless whoever you work with shares your love of the plant over money, you will likely end up let down.

I do think it would be great to see you in business. Just hopefully with the right people.

Thanks a lot really and you're correct, the people I have been talking to don't consume cannabis at all. They use to smoke or in the case of the Colombian company the owns never have. I get excited and start talking I guess a little too in depth and lose them, they don't get it. However it seems my interest in learning useless things has turned around and now is considered "experience" and holds some value. But I get bored with stupid questions and tricky deals that seem to have fuck me written all over them. So anyway it looks like we (the yet to be named Colombian cannabis start up) are going to set up their licensed (hopefully) cannabis grow near this location North of Bogota.

attachment.php

Not as flat as I'd like it but I think we can make it work. They have the land but I don't know how they are going to get the licensing since they don't appear to be very organized or informed (despite having gone to medeweed a week ago).

attachment.php

However they have confidence and really want to work with me so on ward we tally and hopefully 2019 will be a good year.

Hola Red Rider, you can describe price, situation and problems of live in Colombia? I want to buy a finca there, how much expensive is?Thanks :tiphat:

Hola Bardo Eagle, Colombia over all is not as cheap as one would think and in fact certain things like vehicles are really expensive compared with the South Eastern USA where I'm from. As far as real estate like everything else the location is value related and can be extremely expensive or not relatively. Now as far as food (local) it's very very cheap and good quality. But even 20 year old cars here are triple the price as they are in Georgia. If you want more details you can private message me and I'll set you straight on the situation here at the moment.

Colombia 2018

Colombia 2018

I hate to be the one to complain, but I will just for a moment. It is their country and I respect so much my gracious hosts but I seem to be dealing with people that just don't think. Don't get me wrong, I'm flexible and able to change on the fly but why have a two hour "meeting" (at the other side of far away) just to change course 24 hrs later. I like these people and they are obviously intelligent but I have little to no confidence in them. They have not a clue about how to grow any plant much less cannabis and not only that scary thought but they don't know and or believe in cannabis therapeutically.

attachment.php

2004 Bogota

They want to go look at yet another finca today like it's a holiday, plants are dying. They got some plants pushed into a little pool room at their fancy house in the north of Bogota. No light, no air and no ventilation stretched and dehydrated weeds. They wanted to know what to do because all the plants were dying. I couldn't even form words because this was plant abuse out right. I said pull em up, kill em. they are all moldy yellowed dead plants anyway.

attachment.php

So they killed all the plants and threw everything away to start fresh but, it's a young man and an older woman not in any type of romantic relationship but weird business partners. Anyway neither one of them needs to be around plants and they seem to know it now.

Redbud on a roach clip last year

So now they want me to go on another 12 hour car ride through the countryside in order to "look" a another finca location. But I think it's another joy ride and I need to get started on a project soon, I'm going to miss another flowering season (December is like the sunniest month in Bogota).
They are sending me pictures of the newest finca, oh yes it's pretty but so were the other one's ha ha ha.

Ok enough complaining and back to work.

Here's my first full term plant I grew out in Colombia from Colombian seed. Took about 8 months from seed with no lights and produced too much flower. It was potent and tasty but had that "downer" Colombian finish in the effect that I really don't care for.

attachment.php

Then I got this beautiful "Punto Rojo" around May of 05 when my 78 year old dad came down to visit.

attachment.php

It was fresh and the best I'd ever bought here before it all went crippy. The smell was old school hardcore Colombian and the effect was profound and spirit evoking.

attachment.php

My father never a "smoker" was so impressed when he smelled it burning insisted on taking a hit, only one hit. He enjoyed it as he did all of Colombia on his visit. And finally a little redbud that was similar to the PR but much more euphoric and dreamy, while remaining clean at the finish.

attachment.php

I quit cigarettes a few months ago but left them in the picture for size comparison.

No one here is interested in these varieties here that I know but I would think somewhere there is.

Oh Red, that has got to be so disheartening to see the people with the keys to your venture so out of touch with what the opportunity really is, and so far from the passion that drives your commitment.
Their failure at growing may have been a great thing for you, increasing your value as the expert, and hopefully giving your voice more authority in decision making about key things.
I'm not sure what the content of your long meetings cover, but would strongly suggest that goals for the project that you all agree on be nailed down in writing, roles for each teammate be defined and individual areas of responsibility and authority agreed upon.

Perfection can easily be the enemy at this stage of the game, and waiting for it can prevent the project from ever getting started.
Water, sun, security . . . support from the local "authorities." These are all key right?

Are you planning to run any greenhouses?
What kind of products do you hope to produce first? flowers? concentrates? edibles? seeds? Med or Rec (is there a difference in the licensing for those types down there?)

Is licensing just at the national level or are there local regs that need to be complied with?

Would you start with hybrid genetics or focus on sativas from the start?

Rather than load up the project to do "everything" from the beginning, maybe a smaller pilot program night be good to keep momentum going, learn lessons and provide time for a larger operation to be built.
One or 2 low cost greenhouses could be put into operation quickly, produce the first crop of flowers and serve as a nursery for cuttings to feed larger stage 2 ops.

You would get a more realistic idea about running costs and labor, and get your feet wet in dealing with the officials in trying to comply with their regulations.

You will learn many lessons operating at that scale that will be invaluable when you go even bigger.
Mistakes, even partial crop failure would be less devastating at that scale, and can more easily be explained as a risk of any kind of farming, and lessons that improve the odds of success in future runs.

If things are successful, you could be running 2 or more large fincas in a couple of years, but if those guys don't commit and move from planning to execution, the whole thing could stall and die.

We have all shared your cannabis in Colombia dreams for years Red.
Everyone here wants them to come true for you so we can marvel at what you create.

Get that finca and all the supplies and equipment you need to run for a year, up front.
Get a budget for running costs and find a helper or 2 you can trust and sprout the seeds while you put up the first hoop house.
Rollup sides, fans, water power, etc.

Once those investors start spending money, you are in the hot seat but thy are also dependent on you.

Can they acquire the necessary licenses quickly? Can you start while the application process is underway?

Keeping it simple

Keeping it simple

The situation can become over complicated and I constantly must remind myself that it isn't. I basically have very few needs and I really only want a simple life growing cannabis here with my kids close. Everything else is just baggage.

attachment.php

I will be having yet another meeting this morning (breakfast) and hope to make clear a few things.I wrote everything down and translated with slide show so that I'm confident they understand completely and that we are all on the same page. It's really simple and I'm sure we will progress this week a lot further.
This Colombian start up wants to produce like cannabis derived cosmetic products and shampoo and soap, nothing that is psychoactive. Like I said they are very ignorant about cannabis and I've got to explain everything to them in detail (tiring). So a product line and a fancy store sounds good to me, they just need a license and I'll start growing for them, simple. So let's see where we get today with them.

By the way the weather is absolutely beautiful here this time of year which helps with the positive vibes.

Those pictures of the old compressed weed are really familiar looking. The picture of the location are really spectacular, looks warm and humid and very nice.

This is the one that looks just like my favorite old time Colombian weed:

I can just about taste it. Soooo fine! Those were the good old days!

How do they process the buds out there, dry outdoors under a canopy, indoors, fermenting? I'm just curious honestly. This is a cool thread my dad always talked about Thai and Colombian smoke.

Yes I'll admit I got lucky a few times when I first moved here 14 years ago. Funny is I still know the guy that was getting me those nice cheap clumps of classic Colombian, of course now he only fools with the "crippy".

attachment.php

Peaceful vista

But during those first years I thought that it would always be cannabis like that in Colombia, I had no idea it would change so quick. I was buying a new pound every week and it was always different but always pressed to a certain degree and seeded (lightly) just like the old days.

attachment.php

Santa Marta Gold 2005

I was getting all the classic colors and flavors, sweet gold, rusty reds. purples (black) and one time even the Punto Rojo

attachment.php

Tasty Punto Rojo 2005

It was a great time and I started growing and saving seed from the one's I liked.

SMG 05

As far as how "they" cure this type of cannabis I have to admit that I've never seen it done here. However it's not 'bricked" like some Mexican I've had, but it does have a fermented type smell and flavor. But seeds and flowers are still intact and viable but it has a certain flavor that has always been "Colombian" to me. I can almost replicate that flavor by cobbing sativa I grow here. I imagine huge fields and happy peasants with pitch forks piling up golden stalks of bud sun drying on the mountainside. Sweat cured maybe.

Dumbasses

Yet another wild goose chase through the countryside only to find out can't grow at that location for some reason unbeknownst to me. Spent 5 hours riding around (most of the time in city traffic) had a good lunch but once again no finca. So I told these guys that I think their great people but I need a job like yesterday and you now they start acting like their friends (known them since September). But the facts are I'm spending all this time (not getting paid) helping this company that's so incompetent. I don't think they can even get a license. I don't want to go into detail but they really have no knowledge of cannabis and don't seem to be learning really quick. I spent most of the day last Sunday talking to the super smart chemist guy that is one of the partners. There's a little lost in translation I'm sure but this guy don't really understand the plant or cultivation in general.
So anyway I told them last night very nicely that I couldn't keep riding around with them all day and that there would be no more. I feel bad because I've wasted so much time with these guys and got nowhere.

Well here's some pressed regs that can still be found here on the cheap but it's not worth it due to the super poor quality.

attachment.php

This batch was a clump of all these nickel sized flat buds. It had the fermented taste but no high, no noticeable potency. Made it all into QWISO.

attachment.php

And yet another clump, this was browner in color and much seedier. This batch had some potency making it really not bad smoke to me. Very nostalgic breaking up the buds and hearing the seeds making downpour sounds hitting the plastic tray.

attachment.php

Although better potency that the greener stuff it was still low quality in that the effect was sleepy and dirty leaving me with a cloudy hangover.

attachment.php

Despite everything I managed to consume it all.

Brings back memories of brick weed !

Your story of the fruitless work reminds me of a client I had to drop recently. Same theme meet up and go no where, pushed him 4 steps forward then he would turn around and walk 5 back in a zig zag loop.

Negativity

Negativity

Back on track with the same company. After another lengthily talk I feel they understand a few points better now, the main one is I'm tired of fucking around, I want to get to work. Still got the problem with everything else particularly no finca or license. Anyway going to look at another finca tomorrow and it's going to be the one. These guys are just young and surprisingly ignorant, so I spend a lot of time over educating them. The interesting thing is this company is interested in making cosmetics not only with cannabis but an assortment of exotic plants and fruits they plan to grow as well. And we all want to build and learn to optimize a unique micro climates food web to grow some interesting plants.
Sounds like an interesting project and at the moment I've agreed to help them out. Just hope they get the finca tomorrow cause there's a lot to do.
