Colombian things
I was wrong about many things in Colombia. Like many Americans I had preconceived ideas about the country based on the US media. And food was one of them, I assumed Colombian food to be like Mexican food. But what I thought was “Mexican” food really was Tex-Mex. To be honest at first I really didn’t care for Colombian food (which varies from region to region).
I was use to corn feed beef and spicy dishes (my first wife was Cajun) and the Colombian food seemed bland and strange. However after living here for a few years I’ve become rather fond of Colombian food and now even have favorite dishes. In my house we rarely eat out and my wife shops for fresh food every day. Now for the kids we sometimes take them to MacDonald’s but not for the food just for the playground.
I’ve also after years of learning the hard way stopped eating food from the street vendors. Here in Bogota every street corner has somebody selling some kind of delicious toxic fried food. I’ve gotten food poisoning 5 or 6 times as a result of eating it. Here’s some of the fruits and veggies we eat daily, I haven’t eaten anything from a can in years.
I really do enjoy living here and I’ve come to love the culture but I don’t pretend to be Latino, I’m an American keep my identity and customs, passing them to my kids. I BBQ on the 4th of July and party, Thanksgiving is an American tradition in my house and I share this experience with my close Colombian family (they love it). Its Easter week and we will make and hide colored eggs for the kids to find which kind of freaks out the Colombians but that’s what we do. And most Colombians really dig American culture anyway.
I know I complain about my wife a lot but the truth is she is no different than any other woman I’ve been with. She is always pissed at me in various degrees and I’ve come to accept that and carry on. There’s no in-between with her, my wife is to me a very intense, superficial, aggressive person, who is constantly living in the state of chaos. This seems to be typical of Colombian women (something else I didn’t know before). My mother in law is nothing like my wife, my mother in law defends me and spoils me rotten. She’s of the old school and treats the man like a king, I love it and I treat her like a queen.
After viewing the video’s on my phone from Saturday nights outing, I’m not drinking out alone again. Some of the things I was saying and doing in the video was embarrassing to say the least. I was rude and boisterous with the men and I don’t want to mention my behavior around the young ladies. When I get a good beer buzz going I think I’m super cool but not in reality, same with my Spanish. I thought I was speaking perfect Spanish till I saw the video. Well I called my buddy and apologized and I guess they were drunk too because he thought I was fantastic and they wanted a repeat party. Next time I’ll smoke but no booze.
Bella Vista
